Weiner argued for the value of familiar books, with their tropes of self-realization and rescue. And she defended the “political impact of escapism,” having written her first book “almost as a life raft to the girl I had once been.” She continued, “I wanted girls like me—who felt ugly, or fat, or lonely, or like it was never going to get better—to be able to read something and think maybe it will.” Why do we read? Weiner asked the audience. “Yes, to understand the world, and, of course, to meet characters that are alive and visceral. But, at least to me, sometimes we do read to make friends. Sometimes we do read to escape, or find comfort, or to spend time in a world that is a little more fair and a little more kind than the world that we inhabit.”

I went to hear Jennifer Weiner in conversation with Hoda Kotb tonight and all I wanted was to tell her how much this paragraph resonated with me for how I feel about writing, but I didn’t quite manage to find the words when it was my turn to speak with her. She was lovely and funny in her talk with Hoda, she signed my copy of her new book, and I gave her a copy of Christina’s book, because I have made championing Christina’s wonderful book, written in that same “life raft” spirit, one of my missions in life. So it was all in all, a successful evening, even if I wasn’t able to express my appreciation the way I had hoped. And now I have a new Jennifer Weiner book to read.

I doubt I’ll ever feel overjoyed by rejection, but after I finished using my superpowers to process what happened with J., I did feel at peace, and even a little bit happy. Not only had I managed to have compassion for someone who kiiiinda screwed me over (spiritual pat on the back!), I was now free to meet a more compatible partner. So instead of telling myself I was done with dating altogether, I just paused long enough to get caught up on The Good Wife.

C.B. Bryza gives helpful 'when you get rejected' tips—because it can be hard to take the next step when you’re knee deep in ice cream and soaked tissues. And speaking of ice cream, we also have tips for getting over a breakup courtesy of the Frisky Friday archives. (via bedsider) I love that bedsider found/shared my huffingtonpost piece on getting rejected because now I have technically contributed to promoting/supporting bedsider's mission of making birth control accessible to everyone, and that is awesome.

I had a shrink at the time, which will come as no surprise and was the other reason I was down to my last $ 300. He said, and I pass this on to any aspiring writers, that I had to sit down at my desk every day from ten to twelve. I didn’t have to write, but I couldn’t get up, feed my plants, make tea, phone a friend. I had to keep my butt in the seat. Then I had to do the same thing from two to four. It works. You write. And it takes the question “Will I write?” out of your day. It turns writing into habit.
