Photography 230 Final Project
Statement of Intent: For this project, I wanted to use my understanding of color theory and contrast to create strong similarities between the images. Many of my ‘interior’ images were created by playing with light, shutter-speed, or aperture. For the first pair, I used a slower shutter-speed and opened my fridge while taking the picture. Combined with the face mask on the other side, I believe that creates a narrative between glamorizing quarantine and the inability to get food or other necessities easily. It also is a literal metaphor for “you are what you eat.” In the second pair, I wanted to go back to the classic black and white photography that we were learning before we were sent into quarantine. For many of the following interior images, I played around with lighting and this is no exception. I wanted to be able to visualize what it feels like to have ADHD and to break away from the stigma for being “so quirky and random.” Often, I have a lot of racing thoughts, a hard time focusing on anything, and lacking the motivation to do much. I thought lighting would be a really good way to represent that and it the interior image it shows the world spinning around an object, which I thought was a good connection to the feeling. I really appreciated this photo more in black and white and I thought it made a strong pair with the jacket I am wearing in the other photograph. The third pair I think is my weakest. The interior was shot through a water bottle I own and gave off a creepy demonic vibe. I tried to pair this with a bizarre, out of place photo to make it feel discomforting and create that narrative. The fourth and fifth pair are based on similar ideas. Hearkening back to the ADHD narrative, I tried to pair each image with light that displayed similar positions. In the forth pair they match and the energy point of my foot matches the energy point on the other side. In the fifth image, the body is in the same positions as the lights, but mirrored, with our “backs” to each other.
