Can men and women really be just friends?

This question has been asked by many filmmakers over the years. Most will immediately think of Rob Reiner's "When Harry Met Sally". Leslye Headland's "Sleeping With Other People" attempts to answer this question with a kind of candid energy and panache we haven't seen from modern American rom-coms in awhile.

The film opens in flashback - 2002 to be exact- with hapless lovers Jake (Jason Sudeikis) and Lainey (Alison Brie) cashing in their virginity together on the rooftop of their dorm. Flash forward a decade plus and we learn that Jake is a successful entrepreneur/serial philanderer while Lainey is a kindergarten teacher who compulsively cheats on her boyfriend with a sleazy gynecologist (Adam Scott) she's been fixated on since college. Both have mastered the art of self-sabotage in their respective relationships and eventually find themselves reunited at a sex addicts meeting and decide to give friendship a try. This sounds like a familiar setup but the execution is anything but.

Part of what separates this film from typical rom-com drivel is its willingness to indulge in the hedonistic behavior of its main characters - something far too many films of this kind try to repudiate. In one unforgettable scene, we see Jake try to teach Lainey how to masturbate using an empty bottle.

While the film has a dirty mind, it is pure in heart. We know how hard it is to shake someone we feel a legitimate connection with. We see and feel how hard it is to fight the neuroses in our heads. These emotions are captured perfectly in a scene where Jake and Laney end up in bed together after a separate but disastrous night out for both. It is in this embrace that we see two vulnerable souls tired of running away from themselves.

Writer/Director Leslye Headland takes what could have been old hat and turns it into a film that feels fresh and vital. Equal parts funny, sexy and tender - we have Headland's writing to thank. We don't see Jake and Laney as genre tropes, we see them as human beings. Flaws and all. Of course it helps that Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie have an easygoing chemistry as both turn in their best performances to date.

"Sleeping with Other People" does the impossible and breathes new life into the bloated carcass of modern romantic comedies. Highly recommended.
