Personality
Personality Overview: Wisp is generally pretty playful with those she is familiar with, but stand-offish and cold to strangers (Ex: will speak using slang and cuss around friends, will talk "properly" and "business-like" with unknowns.) She comes off as aloof, but is very caring, having an especially soft spot for children and "creepy-crawlies". She'll memorize everything about those she holds close, from birthdays to temperature preference; prioritizing their comfort over her own, and doing little things for them here and there (things they wouldn't think of but reduces their mental load - their laundry basket is overflowing? She'll wash and fold it. They look sad? She's planning a day out revolving around their favorite hobbies. Etc. Etc.). When people make decisions that are illogical by her standards, she becomes frustrated, having to bite her tongue often. She has no qualms about killing, nor torturing, resorting to her own "special" version of water-boarding to gain the information she needs. She's extremely stubborn, to a fault, believing that there isn't an alternative she hasn't thought of when it comes to most decisions. Can and will out-stubborn Kidd. She's a bit of an oxymoron, scolding others for putting themselves in harms way, yet doing the same. She's extremely over-protective of Star, not allowing most people to know of her baby's existence outside of the crew (though, after the events of Wano, she allows the Straw-Hats and Heart Pirates to see her.)
Personality type: INTJ, Aries
Hobbies: Sculpting (former), painting, documenting marine life, underwater welding
Likes: Boiled crab, beignets, spending quality time with Star/Kidd/Killer/the crew, tidepooling, playing D&D, reading/collecting grimoires & spells, painting Kidd's projects, Heavy Metal and Folk Metal music, the color red
Dislikes: Strangers, idiots, most social situations, anything gelatinous, the world government as a whole, fish with whiskers (excluding crustaceans), being the center of attention, being stared at, chess, poker, pop music
Background
Slough Island: Wisp was born to Noctis "The Lurker" Morrigan on Slough, a swampy island a few kilometers south of Elbaf. At the age of three she was stolen by her father, Ipomoea "Saturn" Matias, and whisked away to Amaranth. She doesn't remember her birth island or the face of her mother, but she does know the island's smell.
*(While her true name was given to her by her mother, her nickname came from Ophelia)
Amaranth Island:
On Amaranth, Wisp was raised by Ipomoea "Flower King" Ophelia, until Ophelia was slain by Saturn a few months after giving birth to Ipomoea "Flora" Fleur de Lune.
From that point onward, she was raised by Saturn and a cycle of maids, many of whom she cannot remember the name of, Saturn often killing them within a month or two of their arrival. Saturn was not kind to Wisp, her mana and alternate form never developed during his time alive, making him deem her a failure. He never allowed her near the library, or in the castle's hall of grimoires, citing that "a failure has no need of magis knowledge". In secret, Wisp would study the magis language, hoping that one day she would be able to read a grimoire.
Unbeknownst to Wisp, "The Lurker" had cursed Saturn the day he took her away, causing him to slowly become obsessed with money and mana. The crazier he grew, the more he lashed out at her, giving her many scars and making her loathe men as a whole (at the time).
One fateful day, Flora knocked over Saturn's wine goblet, soaking the documents on his desk. Wisp heard the commotion and rushed to her sister's aide. She took the brunt force of Saturn's wrath, shielding Flora. Once he had left to further blow off his fit of rage, Wisp set to cleaning his desk. While doing so, she found documents dictating the sale of the islands people, including herself, and several proposals to celestial dragons regarding making Flora a concubine. It was then that Wisp realized if she didn't do something her people would face a fate worse than death.
Over the course of two years, Wisp plotted and planned. She kept her intentions secret until Herman, a local shipwright, approached her with the idea of creating a secret army to combat Saturn's cult following. They planned to strike at the end of the year, but nothing went as they'd hoped. Saturn's mind deteriorated much faster than anticipated, causing him to turn on his children.
In the middle of the night, Wisp awoke to smoke blanketing the castle. As she was trying to evacuate Flora, she came across Saturn in his alternate form. He attacked her with abandon, forcing her to throw Flora out of the nearest window to protect her from his blows. Wisp tried to escape as well, but was dragged back by Saturn. It was a game of 'cat and mouse' after, Wisp had no mana or formal weapon training to effectively fight back. Saturn eventually caught her, chewing her in his maw before swallowing her down. In Saturn's gullet, Wisp cried out for Ophelia, the only mother she remembered, and begged the gods to protect Flora and her people. Just when she thought she was dead, her mana awakened.
Wisp switched into the alternate half of her soul; a large, slender, six-winged dragon. Being much bigger than Saturn, she ripped him apart from the inside out, effectively killing him.
Not even a week after the incident, Saturn's cult following came to kill Wisp, citing revenge. In a fit of fear and exhaustion, she fought back, blindly slaughtering and eating his followers as well as some of her own people. When she came to, she was faced with the horrors of her lack of control. As it turns out, a handful of the followers were connected to celestials, putting her island at risk of backlash. Herman happened upon her in her bloodied, shocked state, initiating an idea to cover up Wisp's crime.
After evacuating the island to its peninsula, Wisp casted her first ever spell -taught to her by Herman-, sinking the mainland.
Wisteria Peninsula:
Wisteria was established as the new island, and Wisp was nominated as the 'stand-in' King, to hold Flora's place until she turned eighteen. The mainland sinking destroyed the kingdom's finances, as well as most of the grimoires used for farming, putting it's civilians on the brink of starvation. Wisp spent most of her time gathering food from the ocean to keep as many alive as possible wilst starving herself, though it did little to help the diseases that accompanied the famine.
In order to combat the sicknesses and disease, Wisp began searching for healing grimoires. Unfortunately, the first and only one she found was cursed with residual magic, permanently altering the way her healing magic works*. However, once the curse was put on her, the grimoire became usable again, allowing Flora and some nuns from the Church of Nocta to save the remaining civilians.
*(Wisp can still use healing magic, but not without using extra mana and making a sacrifice for the recipient of the healing - the sacrifice often being an offering of her own blood, or taking on the recipient's pain. This leaves her drained and exhausted, making her an inefficient healer.)
During this time, the world government had sent many letters to the kingdom's parliament, demanding a marital tie be made between the kingdom and government in exchange for financial assistance amidst the 'natural disaster'. Knowing that the coast wouldn't provide food for them for much longer - especially with the pollution caused by the sunken island - Wisp eventually excepted the proposal, shedding her title of 'King' to 'Empress' and starting the grueling process of selecting a suitor.
A few months into rejecting suitors, Araden Verdanda appeared, manipulating Wisp into a marriage with him with a combination of mind-altering magic and his own natural allure. At first, Wisp did genuinely fall in love with him, not knowing his true intentions. However, she soon found out that his only goal was to overtake her kingdom and produce an heir he could weaponize, all to earn the favor of celestials. After the revelation of his true intentions, Wisp had a nun named Stelle place a spell on her to prevent pregnancy, as she knew he would groom the child into a marriage candidate for a celestial. Unfortunately, Stelle was Verdanda's real lover, and her goal was the same as his.
Wisp later became pregnant, and had a complicated birth, putting her on death's door. Verdanda was going to leave her to die, the child being his only goal, but was stopped by Flora who traded her true name in exchange for Wisp's life. Once Wisp regained her bearings, she was allowed to hold her child, who she named Clematis (nicknamed 'Star' to protect her true name). A day later, after Wisp refused to tell him Star's true name, Verdanda took Star away. Wisp, despite still being very weak, tried to fight to get her baby back, but was ultimately overpowered by Verdanda, who erased her memories of Star.
Four months later, the Kidd pirates crashed off shore. Wisp took them in, and - with the help of Flora and the nuns - got them back on their feet. A week before they were set to leave, Verdanda returned to the island with the knowledge of their presence, attacking them. Wisp protected Kidd and his crew until they were out of Verdanda's range, in exchange for her 'betrayal', Verdanda slaughtered her people, altering Flora's mind to do the same. He tricked Wisp into believing she killed Flora as one last act of anger. Wisp, extremely wounded and weak from her injuries, was taken prisoner to be sold at Sabaody, as Verdanda no longer had a use for her without her island or title. Aboard his ship, her mana is blocked away by a command through the use of her true name. She was locked in the brig not long after, and treated like an animal. Verdanda and his crew did the bare minimum to keep her alive, allowing her wounds to fester and causing sepsis to begin its cycle on her body.
Sabaody:
Wisp reunited with Kidd and his crew during Sabaody, at the Human Auction house, earning a favor from Rayleigh for helping Chopper with Hatchi - which she later cashed in for someone to coat the Victoria Punk. As she and the handful of Kidd Pirates made their escape, they ran into Law and his crew. Just as the group was overwhelmed by the Pacifistas, she shielded them from a blast and stunned the robots long enough for everyone to retreat. Already weak and wounded, she collapsed during the retreat. Law, as a "thank you", gave her enough basic treatment to keep her alive until she could receive full care aboard the Victoria Punk. Days later, she wakes up in the Victoria's infirmary.
After a month, Wisp became the crew's official strategist. When the crew returned to Sabaody to watch the streaming of Ace's execution, Wisp ran into Verdanda again. He had disguised himself as Flora to lower her guard, then captured her. Under strict orders to avoid conflict, Verdanda tried to bargain with Kidd and Killer, urging them to leave her behind in exchange for a position as Warlords - a lie. When pressed as to why he wants her when he was going to sell her anyway, he simply says he found a new use for her. Wisp and Killer had plotted a contingency plan beforehand for if they crossed paths with Verdanda, which allowed them all to escape unharmed once more - much to Kidd's displeasure*.
*(He was glad everyone was safe, but really really wanted to tear a new one into Verdanda.)
In the New World:
As time passed, Wisp worked tirelessly to pave a path for her captain, spending late nights hunched over maps and intelligence files (obtained via the courtesy of Killer and a few other members of the crew). In one of the files, she saw Flora in the background of a photo. With the confirmation that her sister is still alive, she tried to sneak out, putting a solo rescue mission into motion. However, she was stopped by Kidd. Instead of getting angry, he gave her a boat to borrow, making her promise to return with her sister and alive.
As it turns out, the evidence had been planted by a member of Verdanda's crew, who recognized the Kidd Pirate who took the photo. As soon as Wisp stepped aboard the ship, she was caught. She spent several nights locked in Verdanda's office, until Kidd and Killer showed up. Their arrival created enough of a distraction for Verdanda to leave the door unlocked, letting Wisp escape. She found Flora on her way to the upper deck, and both mages, along with Kidd and Killer, escaped.
Back aboard the Victoria Punk, Flora explains what really happened the day Verdanda attacked. Through her explanation, Wisp learns that Verdanda had manipulated them both into thinking the other was dead, keeping them from attacking him with their combined strength. This knowledge makes Wisp suspicious of his cowardice, giving her the idea to dig deeper into his history and her own.
Wisp went from library to library with no luck, until she finally found one at a newly obtained territory, old and abandoned. Inside the library, she stumbled upon a book on Slough, and her real mother's name (though she doesn't yet know it). The book detailed how Slough mages are few and far between, all having a mythical beast-type alternate form, much like Wisp. It was all the encouragement she needed to bring the book to Kidd, begging he take her there to figure out who she might really be.
In the midst of Wisp's self discovery, Flora disappeared, leaving behind a note telling of her distaste for the pirate life and hatred of marines. At the end of the note, she said she would pave her own way, and that she is grateful for Wisp and the Kidd Pirates. Though distraught, Wisp doesn't go looking for her, respecting Flora's decision.
As Wisp and the Kidd Pirates traveled deeper into the New World, Kidd promised Wisp that they would head for Slough if they ever found a map or log pose to it. Wisp took him up on the promise, digging deeper into old archives, and putting out more feelers for anything about Slough or any books written in the magis language. She got a bite in the form of a Poneglyph rubbing being transported aboard one of Big Mom's ships. Kidd not only needed the Poneglyphs for his own goal, but also wanted his tactician to grow stronger; so he agreed to go with Wisp to retrieve the rubbing.
They managed to take the rubbing, only having to fight a small scuffle with one of Big Mom's generals, which Kidd won with ease. Back aboard the ship, they celebrated a job well done, and officially formed a relationship together. Wisp began to study the Poneglyph rubbing, cross referencing it with the book she found. In doing so, she learned that the Poneglyphs are written in a language adjacent to magis, allowing her to very slowly translate it. This newfound information doubled her interest in the Poneglyphs, believing they might hold a connection to her home.
