Keeping Score, Chapter 17: I Told You Things

Nezha has to squint to block the blinding light. There is no reprieve from the sun anywhere, no clouds, no trees, and not even a single shadow. Just an endless stretch of white sand and a merciless sun burning overhead, its heat reflecting back up at him until it seeps into his bones. He feels gross and too warm. Uncomfortable really. He squirms, feeling the sand grit against his sweaty skin. But at least Rin is here, the only reprieve in the blistering heat. He is dreaming, Nezha knows this. Real Rin wouldn’t tuck herself between Nezha’s legs, laying her body back against his chest, fitting against him like she belongs there. Real Rin wouldn’t hold his palm, lightly tracing the lines in his hand as if she can read their future together. Real Rin wouldn’t tilt her head back just enough for her lips to brush against his shoulder, right where the sun has started to sting his skin pink. But dream Rin does, so Nezha decides to stay here as long as he can.
