Second ! I’m going to put this into tutorial form which is gonna be under the cut in case others would want to learn from this as well :D
For this tutorial I’m assuming you know how to make a basic gif with Photoshop, so I’ll be skipping out on all the basics
Okie I’ll start off with how I prep the gif before I color. So Let’s do a gif from that set of Katara
So for all my gifs I do three things: surface blur, smart sharpen, and then minimum. I do it in that order but tbh I don’t know if it would make a difference if you did it out of order. So ok Surface Blur is going to be under blur right here
and then here are my presets for that option
The main point of surface blur is to prep it for the sharpen. If you don’t blur your gifs before you sharpen, sometimes they can turn out overly sharp and grainy, which we do not want! Ok so after that I go to smart sharpen under sharpen and here are my presets for that
I know some people max it out to 500 for the amount, but for me that just makes your gifs too sharp to the point that they look ugly. Here’s the comparison with 220 and 500
Ok so after that I do this thing called the minimum, which is how I get those nice think lines for my gifs.
Ok when you first click minimum a box is going to pop up with the radius at 1.0. Go ahead and lower that radius down to 0.5 or else your lines might be too too thick. Also make sure the preserve is on roundness not squareness
If you find out that your lines are still too thick, you can adjust the minimum even further by going to the arrows on the right side of it and double clicking it. The opacity will pop up and you can change it from 100% to your desired thickness.
THE COLORING
Ok, I’m not going to go into every detail about the coloring because this post would be much too long lol. However I will show you the general basics on how to get a pastel like color! So, here’s the coloring that I made
now let’s take away all the color :o
So I started off with a photo filter for this coloring cause I wanted the focus to be on the blues, so I put a blue filter over it. Next I played with the curves to make sure it was really pale. Usually this can be accomplished my dragging the curve upward. Ok here’s what it looks like so far
Next I played with the levels to make the coloring a bit brighter. But after that comes the most important part, selective coloring. So I wanted to make this gif look really washed out so the most important thing to do to achieve that is to decrease the blacks. NOTE!! do not decrease the color black itself too much or you’ll end up with a weird missing chunks in the coloring. Instead remove black from the other colors that you want to manipulate. For me this was white, cyan, and blue. I also increased the red and yellow so another color could pop against the muted blues.
So then I added a few more layers of selective coloring, hue/saturation, levels and brightness and voila here is the final coloring once again
Ok now I’m going to apply it to the Katara gif and we can see the comparison between the unedited one and the one we just worked on. Here’s the unedited version:
