The Annunciation
Artist: George Hitchcock (American, 1850–1913)
Date: 1887
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, United States
Description
In George Hitchcock’s unusual presentation of the Annunciation, the virgin is depicted as a Dutch peasant girl standing in a field of lilies. Traditionally, the lily is a symbol of the angel Gabriel, and Mary’s downcast eyes and humble stance imply that she has received his divine message.

Maria Virgo
Artist: May Louise Greville Cooksey (British, 1878–1943)
Date: 1915
Medium: Oil on board

Maria Virgo
The painting shows a medieval style portrait of a woman, Maria Virgo or the Virgin Mary, with a halo around her thinly veiled head and some lilies in her hand. The title appears in the top left corner of the image in a medieval style script. The Annunciation Lily signifies Divine Love. The three fully opened blooms represent the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Bacchus and Ariadne
Artist: Luca Giordano (Italian, 1634-1705)
Date: ca. 1685-1686
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, United States
Description
This oil on canvas painting illustrates the first meeting of Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete, and Bacchus, the god of wine. Ariadne was deserted by Theseus after helping him escape the Labyrinth. In the painting, she sadly sleeps by the water's edge, heartbroken; putti, satyrs, Bacchus and other celebrants sneak up on the slumbering Ariadne. Bacchus falls in love with her, forecast by the crown of stars above her, and they marry.
