the house stirred with the unexpected guest. zee looked up from her coffee and book with a sigh, deciding it was probably best to investigate. opening a window to the second floor the magician spotted a young man and leaned out the window casually. “you’re really lucky the house decided not punish you. she’s been in a temperamental mood lately. but she must think you need something. so rather then scale like some thief why don’t you come inside. i’ll make some hot chocolate.”

her head pounded. something felt like it all wrong. well the situation was all wrong but something else was making it worse. running her hand through dark hair the magician tried to compose herself, she needed to get her bearings and find others. she could sense many people but couldn’t locate them fully. desperate times called for desperate measures. gathering as many rocks and twigs and leaves as she could zatanna created what she hoped was a map. pricking her finger she dropped blood onto a stone and started scrying for other. it wasn’t accurate but it was something. with backwards words she picked up her “map” and had it float beside her as she walked to wear it felt like others were. “hey, hey. if your there, i’m not going to hurt you. i want to help. are you okay, can i help.” she could only hope she was talking to a friend.

it was cliche really, standing in the shadows but zatanna had a flair for the dramatic. dark eyes flicked up at the woman, a card danced in her hand, twirling around her lithe fingers. her show was on a break for the week and so the magician decided to reacquaint herself with the city. so much had been going on lately but she had been trying to the people distracted that she herself was distracted. their was new magic in town, lots of it. she was sure that it would upset the balance of the strange city but she would wait and watch and meet. “are you the one they call the witch?”

kate’s head slumped over, her eyes closing as she dozed off again. she sat in the corner of the quaint coffee house, doing her best to not pass out completely at the table. she slowly opened her eyes again, blinking rapidly. she reached into her pocket looking for a phone to call an uber when she saw a familiar face she turned to them giving a small smile. “hey there’s no way you could give me a ride home is there? i’m exhausted and i’d rather not get into some creeps uber if possible.”

the woman needed some coffee. she needed to finish a few things and a cup of coffee was going to get her through it all. as she waited for her coffee her gaze landed on a familiar face. she smiled and nodded. “i think i can manage that. come on. their will be no creepy ubers today.”

“ Zee, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to ━ ” Dinah begins, then cuts herself off. She’d come to give her friend the bouquet she’d bought as congratulations for last night’s show. The plan was to give her them in her dressing room right after, but that got delayed when she had to take down a weapons shipment across town. Walking up to her, she shifts the flowers to one hand. “ I came to surprise you. But I should have knocked first. ” She uses her now free hand to touch her shoulder. “ I get if you wanna be alone. But I’m here, if you want to talk about what’s wrong. ” 

“No I should be sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so mean. Sorry.” Zatanna sighed and placed a hand on her friends. “You don’t have to knock, you’re always welcome. I’m sorry.” Zee moved the paper looking in the mirror. “They always mention the loss of my dad. And think of what he would think of everything going on right now and then I’m never really sure if I’m doing what he wanted.”

          ❝ well i didn’t know you when you were twelve, sorry about that. ❞ his reply has a fresh coating of ice, looking at her for a few seconds, then back at his bag. ❝ capturing ritual; all in a day’s work. which i don’t need any help with, thanks for asking. ❞

“cause you never bother to ask.” she bites back, her gaze on the man becomes steely as dark eyes narrow for a moment. when he looks at the bag she mumbles under breath those backwards words                                               || wohs em stahw edisni || because why bother asking. “are positive about that?” zee’s crosses her arms as if she’s smarter then john.”

          ❝ zee. ❞ john says when he encounters her, hands working to shuffle various magical items out of a large bag. demon business. just as always. ❝ don’t y’ have a show or something to be getting to ?? another copperfield to upstage ?? ❞

the woman looks up at the man, she runs a hand through dark curled locks. “I upstaged copperfield when i was 12.” her tone is tired and she is short in her responses. zatanna exhales. “i’m taking this week off.” dark eyes flick over the bag. “what are you doing?”

I didn’t mean to snap at you.” The magician picked up a tissue and dabbed at her eyes, trying to keep the make up intact. it was vain but when all this was over she still had to walk out of the room, her image intact. She sniffled and shook her head. “No, I’d rather you here then anyone else. Always.” Zatanna felt the hand on her shoulder and placed hers atop and sighed. “Every year the paper writes about my dad. How the last time he took the stage with me was the last time anyone saw him and I’m never prepared for what they write.”

❝It’s quite alright. Never apologize for how you are feeling. You are allowed to-❞ Diana swallowed hard, it was true she had gotten better at this. Over the years she had to learn how to offer comfort, and deal with this kind of situations herself. And while the feelings of leaving her mother behind would never compare to what Zatanna was feeling, Diana knew what it meant to miss someone you loved more than life. ❝He’s proud of you Zatanna❞ she said what she imagined would help her friend the most. ❝And I’m holding you up to that. It’s been so long since I’ve seen you perform…❞

“John and Xanadu tell me I feel too much, that my emotions will get the best of me in the end.” She sighed, twirling dark hair around her finger, absently. “Sometimes I think he wouldn’t be. I haven’t been the best.” The magician looked up at the woman trying to smile. “The world has been made so much bigger and all I’ve got at this point is performing. To take the people’s mind off what’s happening. I’ve forgotten my friends might need moments to forget.”

(&& Diana):

Diana did her best to silently approach, but perhaps that had been a mistake. She had only wanted to make sure Zatanna was okay, but it appeared she just gave her the wrong impression. ❝Oh❞ Diana stops and shakes her head trying to pick the right words. ❝I never intended to stare…❞ the truth is always the right way, ❝just wanted to see if you were okay. But I would love to see your show too❞ she adds with a small smile.

Running her hand through dark locks the magician looked over at Diana. “Sorry, Di, I didn’t mean to sound like that. It’s all the eyes they’ve been on me both in this world and another. I’m sorry to snap at you.” She offered up a small smile as well as a shrug to the woman , “Any time you want to come you just give me a call, you’re a VIP. Sometimes I just get so sad about my father, it’s been so long and I think I’ll be okay but it’s moments like this that I realize it still hurts.”

Wiping a stray tear from her cheeks the magician sighs trying to hold back the waterworks that threaten to fall. Zatanna tries to keep her composure but the mention of her father in her latest review is heartbreaking. She feels a pair of eyes on her. “If you want to stare you can come see my show.”

“I think ive struggled enough by this point maam But i think Change isnt bad Just something im terrible at getting used to you know? I guess People need me so i have to stay strong regardless of what happens you know?”

“You have unique way of looking that. Most people would give up.” Her mind immediately flickers to Constantine but she smiles at the man. A hand reaches out and breaths out softly, “Zatanna. Zatanna Zatara. My friends call me Zee.”

(&& Garfield):

🍃     green eyes widened and garfield was almost positive he had heart emojis shooting from his ears. zatanna was inviting him somewhere AND paying? how surreal. “i’m all for that plan. it’s the best plan. so please love it. i will definitely need to take a look at the menu. but if you get chocolate i’m trying some of yours.”

the magician clapped her hands together bringing them to her mouth, laughing at his reaction. nodding her head in the direction they would be going, zatanna turned to start walking. “i mean finally they give us an ice cream shop like this. is it so much to ask for a vegan, organic, tasty ice cream.”
