Thoughts on “heathens” by twenty one pilots:

1. A “heathen” is someone that is an outsider, usually to a religion or certain group. Tyler says “all my friends are heathens,” which is him alluding to the longtime fans that are considered outsiders by new fans that have just recently discovered the Clique. 

2. Throughout the song, Tyler warns the longtime members of the Clique to “take it slow” and to not judge or bar out new fans. He brilliantly says this in just a few lines: “We don’t deal with outsiders very well. They say newcomers have a certain smell.” He also has a message for the new fans, which is not to jump to conclusions about the longtime fans. He says “You’ll never know the psychopath sitting next to you, you’ll never know the murderer sitting next to you.” Basically, he is telling the new fans that everyone has internal problems and mental health issues and that the friends you will make when you join the Clique have this in common with you.

3. This is just my analysis, but when the distorted, low voice says “watch it” over and over again throughout the song, it could mean a few things. One might be that it is just Tyler reminding longtime fans to “watch it” and not judge the new ones that might not be too familiar with the meaning behind the songs. But what I actually think is that it is Blurryface telling Tyler to “watch it,” that all of these new fans should not be trusted, that Blurryface is trying to cause further division within the Clique. If the latter is true, that is some brilliant lyrical content and manipulation by Tyler. 

4. The last few lines of the song are the eeriest. They are as follows:

“Why’d you come, you knew you should have stayed. I tried to warn you just to stay away. And now they’re outside ready to bust. It looks like you might be one of us.”

Tyler is warning the new fans that they might be getting in over their head by joining the Clique because their songs seem to cause fans to realize the insecurities and mental problems they have inside. He might also be warning them against Blurryface, who knows? 

Overall, this is some of the best lyrical content that they have put out. It has been rumored that the song will be featured in the soundtrack of Suicide Squad. I think it fits perfectly.
