Have you ever wanted to design and teach a course to your fellow undergrads for academic credit?

For years, universities like Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Rice and more have had programs that empower students by giving them the ability to create their own courses and then offer these courses to others for academic credit. These student-led courses supplement core classes, increase learning opportunities and provide great ways to build friendships over shared academic interests.

Last Spring, the Computer Science Department served as a pilot for two student-facilitated courses and now we’re looking to make this program accessible to students from all majors!

If you’re interested in potentially teaching your own course and want to know more about the process, or if you’re just interested in supporting this fledgling program, email Rylan Schaeffer at [email protected]. I would be happy to guide anyone through the process of teaching your own course, drawing from the course I taught as an example.

The UC Davis Cross Cultural Center (CCC) is seeking to display artwork in its front Art Lounge and hallway that is reflective of its mission:

Born out of student activism and political struggle, the UC Davis Cross Cultural Center provides a culturally relevant community space where student voices can be expressed and respected. The CCC cultivates critical consciousness and cultural competency by providing learning opportunities at the crossroads of the many aspects of our identities and experiences.  By embracing our cultural and intellectual heritage, the CCC supports student leadership in advancing our collective vision for community empowerment and social justice.

Who is eligible to apply to showcase artwork in the CCC?

· Any current undergraduate, graduate, staff, faculty, or community member may apply to submit art to be displayed in the center.

How is my art chosen to be displayed at the CCC?

· The artist must submit the CCC Art Lounge Application Form with five digital samples of their exhibition via email.

· Exhibitions need to be five pieces or more.

· Your art addresses cultural, ethnic or racial issues and/or focuses on fostering social justice.

· Art chosen is exhibition-based, meaning that the committee would prefer a collection of five or more pieces from each artist, with the exception of large-scale pieces.

· Your art fits within the parameters of the space available at the center. No work of art can be longer than 6 feet long or 4 feet tall. Additionally, no individual piece of artwork can weigh over 20 pounds.

· Your art is chosen by a committee of one career staff member and two student staff, determining how it fits the themes of the center

What are my expectations and responsibilities?

The artist must meet with the Office Coordinator in person and go through a checklist with them regarding the items below:

· The artist must submit the CCC Art Lounge Application Form. Please turn in the application form at the Cross Cultural Center's front desk (located inside the Student Community Center) or via email.

· The artist must provide the CCC with five digital samples of their exhibition via email, in addition to the CCC Art Lounge Application Form.

· Exhibitions need to be five pieces or more.

· The artist agrees that the CCC may publish and disclose information about them and their work.

· The artist agrees to abide to CCC policies and procedures.

· Art is hung at its own risk. The CCC is not liable to what happens to the hanging of artwork in the center, whether it falls, in case of theft, or any other scenario.

· Our Art Lounge is based off of an art hanging system that works only with two-dimensional artwork. Framed art is hung on the back and matted art is hung through clips.

DVD project

Looking for help on a DVD project. I am a landscape designer with a background in Drought Tolerant Landscaping. I speak to different venues and show many pictures of Before and After images of landscapes. My intention is to take these stills, add some live pieces of me talking (in certain landscapes), and then doing a lot of voice-over to create in informative, picture-heavy how-to DVD. I’d like to find someone who has fresh ideas, some animation skills (I would like to animate the design-drawing process) and also who is proficient in editing skills. Volunteer for Fall International Student Orientations!

Are you looking for an opportunity to meet new people and have fun this summer?

Then, come volunteer for the UC Davis International Student Orientations and make new friends while helping the international community!

Be the welcoming and enthusiastic face of UC Davis as we greet over 1500 new incoming international undergraduate and graduate students to the UC Davis campus this September. We will need as much help as possible with various aspects of orientation such as greeting students, providing information about UC Davis and the Davis community, leading campus tours, and planning social events to name a few.

Here are the details about how it all works:

When?  Orientations and events will take place between Thursday, September 10th and Wednesday, September 23rd.

Who can volunteer?  Domestic students, international students, staff, faculty, retirees or members of the Davis community can help with the orientations.  Anyone who is interested in helping and getting to know international students is welcome to volunteer!

Is there training?  Volunteers must attend a MANDATORY 3-hour training session in which we go over the logistics of orientation, job duties as a volunteer, and a short workshop on cultural awareness to prepare volunteers on how to approach and help international students with questions and cultural differences they may face.

How do I sign up?  If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this form to let us know that you would like to volunteer and to tell us which volunteer training session you can attend:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Z9Q8JD9. Physical Requirements: Must be able to transport photography equipment to various shooting locations.

Approximate Hours per Week: 12-19. The majority of  time will be spent shooting on location, in and around campus. Photo assignments can be submitted remotely. Face-to-face meetings with the SAMC team will occur as needed.

Fulbright Program

An overview of the program and the application process as well as offer tips and advice to becoming a successful applicant will be provided. Attendance is strongly encouraged for all potential applicants. No RSVP is required.

Program Description: up to one year of international funding for recent (2015) undergraduates, masters students or recipients and current PhD students. The Fulbright may be utilized to explore research interests, graduate or independent study projects, and/or English teaching opportunities in participating countries. The program purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills. Selection is based on the applicant’s academic or professional record, language preparation, the feasibility of the proposed study project, and personal qualifications. There are three basic kinds of programs as follows; however "Special Opportunities" also exist (see below): • Full Grants provide round trip travel, maintenance for the tenure of the award, a limited research allowance, and tuition waivers (if applicable), supplemental health insurance, possible language or orientation course for up to one year abroad. • Travel Grants provide round-trip transportation to the country of study, supplemental health insurance and orientation courses if applicable. • English Teaching Assistantships provide round trip travel, maintenance, and supplemental health insurance and orientation courses if applicable. ETA's are not available in all countries. Please see participating summary area of the country(ies) you are interested in to see if the ETA is offered. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eligibility: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application. Applicants must hold a B.A., B.S. or, if in the creative or performing arts, four years of study and/or experience, before the beginning of  the start date of grant with exceptions as noted in the Fulbright Program web site.
