“I’m almost disappointed you didn’t put up more of a fight, Mercie.” Danny teased as she walked down the hall, pausing when he opened the door. She opened her mouth and closed it a few times. “Well,” Danny clicked her tongue and looked at him. “I do have to say that beat my baby unicorn.” She set bubbles down and knelt down to the baby thestral’s level. “Hi cutie,” Danny said warmly to it, turning her attention back to Mercer, smirking slightly. “This little guy wouldn’t be the reason for all those weirdly specific questions your first day, now would it? Should I ask where you got it?”

He pouted while leaning against the frame of the door. His stomach twisted uncomfortably, expecting the worst. “Did not. Your baby unicorn is also beautiful.” He probably wouldn’t have spent as much time with one if she didn’t have it. “Pfft...those were important questions. She was hurt when I found her...and I did go back to search for a herd she must’ve lost, but I didn’t come across one.” Maybe he gave up soon, too, feeling he could take care of her on his own. “Are you going to take her away now or like...arrest me?”

“I did that for a bit, but there’s only so much pizza a guy can have before getting sick of it. I know it sounds crazy, but five days for each meal sure adds up. Life is easier when you have people cooking for you… on the bright side, I had no one nagging me on my meal choices.”

“You should’ve switching up what you ordered. Then again, all that grease does add up.” It was fun until the thought of ordering more fast food made him sick instead of excited. “I suppose that’s true, though I’m usually the one that does the cooking, so.” He shrugged. “Getting to eat cake for breakfast without someone judging you is the best.”

“Things weren’t that bad at Hogwarts… I wasn’t studying 60 hours a week over there.” Ben sighed heavily and dramatically. “Mercer, don’t even get a job that requires you to work over 40 hours a week.”

“I really think you need a vacation.” He smiled slightly since it wasn’t the first time he thought so. “I like to stay busy...but you know more than me, so you’re probably right.”

“Well, insensitive is my forte,” Jackson looked at him. “Did I hit a nerve, Fairchild? My apologies.”

“How can insensitive be anyone’s forte?” He didn’t think it was possible. “...no, it’s just not something you should joke about.”

“So when are we taking bets on who the next person to get offed will be?”

Alastor leaned back in his seat, “If you didn’t do anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. If you did establish contact with the muggle world, then you need to tell me now. You do know the law went into effect the other day, right?”

“Yes, I know...” He held back a sigh. “A friend called...yes, a muggle friend. He was asking me to dog-sit and I declined.” It sucked because he watched that puppy before, but figured turning it down for now because of the law restrictions was the safest thing to do. “I didn’t know a pet question would get me interrogated.”

Roman continued to beat the bowl of frosting with the spoon, stress clearly riddling hiss features as he did so. Wiping his forehead with the back of his hand, he lifted his slightly flour covered face to meet the eyes of the other. “I’ve been baking all day, and I’ve made about five cakes so far. It’s the only thing kind of keeping me calm right now.”

Mercer had been worried since he hadn’t heard from Roman in a while. He could relate when he saw the mess around the kitchen. It didn’t look like his friend had taken a break. “Okay...do you need help with finishing that one or cleaning?” He grabbed a napkin and passed it over, motioning to the boy’s face.

“Let me the first to admit that this adult life sucks. Having to cook my own meals every single day gets tiring quick. Don’t even get my started on laundry.”

“That’s what ordering pizza is for.” He mused with a small chuckle. Even though he loved cooking, Mercer had his lazy days. “I won’t,” He started with a groan. “You’re reminding me of everything I need to take care of at home.”

“Is it normal to spend an hour just gathering the strength to get up to go to work in the morning? I’m sure this is what they call burnout.”

“Mhm, I believe we’ve all been doing that since school--Hogwarts.” He corrected himself since technically he still attended school, but everything was just...more now.

“You, my dear Mercer Fairchild, are a horrible liar.” She tapped him teasingly on the nose and started down the hall, Bubbles still in her arms. “Let’s go see what Daddy’s hiding down here, shall we?” She glanced over her shoulder and smiled at him, “Going to stop me, love?”

Mercer was sputtering for words. Normally he’d deny it, but Danny was smart. She always was a step ahead of him. He was stupid for thinking he could hide the creature he was so fond of. “It’s just...!” There was no point in forcing another lie. “I mean...I guess...you would’ve found out sooner or later.” He pouted defeatedly, holding his breath when he opened the door to reveal what he found to be the cutest little thestral.

“I just...I don’t know where to start.” He finally spoke up, quietly though because he had done all things possible not to think about Brinley. Yet here he was with Lottie and it made him uncomfortable to deeply consider, even though he wanted to try to be a braver person.

“Are you afraid?” He questioned, wondering if he should be scared that they were in a graveyard. With all that was going on, he knew he should be. Surprisingly, Mercer wasn’t. Slightly on edge, sure, but the blond was oddly okay with their surroundings for now.

Teddy paused when he saw how dark the magical creatures floor was. Having left his wand in his office – which wasn’t good auror skill, but whatever – he couldn’t do much about it. He sat the papers he was bringing Danny down on her desk, not surprised to see she wasn’t there, and looked over at her intern. “Should I ask why it’s dark down here? Because I highkey feel like it’s because she has some sort of weird and illegal animal down here that sucks the energy out of everything.” He was joking, but he stopped, because that actually sounded very much like his sister-in-law. “She doesn’t, does she?”

Mercer looked to the ceiling as if the lights would magically turn on. Instead he began to pat around for his wand, frowning slightly when he realized he must’ve set it down. “Yeah, we should see if it’s just this floor or the whole building.” Merce squinted, trying to make out the objects around him. He couldn’t help chuckling. “No, that sounds more like a Pokémon than a real thing.” If Danny did have an illegal animal, he wouldn’t give it away.

“Yeah, because I have nothing better to do than to rig statues to make googly eyes at you when nobody’s watching,” Levi scoffed, fighting the urge to roll his eyes as he stuffed a chip in his mouth. “If they watch when you turn your back how do you even know they’re watching, huh? I dunno man, sounds like you’re the one tryin’ to pull a prank.”

“That’s exactly what a prankster would say.” He sighed a little because Levi truly must not know the cartoons where it happens. “Because you can sense the eyes on you! You just know the feeling.” It gave him goosebumps and made him hyperaware. “What ever gave you the idea that I’d try to prank you?”

“Merlin, blondie. Did you kill someone in here,” Danny teased as she dropped her purse into one of the couch. She immediately reached for the puppy and cradled her in her arms. “Aren’t you just the sweetest thing,” she cooed, smiling as she scratched her behind her ear.  “I just came by to drop off some…” Danny trailed off, noticing Mercer was trying to hide something, but didn’t comment on it. Yet. “Paperwork for a case tomorrow – why do you keep not looking down there?” She smirked and made a move to step around him. “Am I not supposed to know?”

“Pfft! I’m the one who tripped trying to clean up after them. Do you know how hard it is to try to land on the floor instead of the cat or dog?” He rambled again, which wasn’t a total made up story. He feared accidentally landing on a pet. “She’s going to want you to keep picking her up now, you know.” Mercer smiled though as Bubbles excitedly wagged her little tail and gave Danny kisses. If she had been playing, he knew he shouldn’t have tried to step and block her path. “Baggy is, uhm, sleeping.” But a cat’s meow was not what he heard from behind Henry’s door. “Or she’s up. But my cat hasn’t been feeling well so I’ll just let her rest. I can check out that paperwork.” He changed the subject.

Henry let out a sigh and put his hand over Mercer’s back, drawing soothing circles on his back. “It’s okay to cry, Mercie,” he spoke softly and pressed a kiss to the top of the blond’s head. It was heartbreaking to see Mercer so upset when he’s always seemed to be on cloud nine and Henry wasn’t even sure how to act. All he knew was that he needed to be there for his best friend. “He’s not suffering anymore and I bet he’s having all the snacks he wants in the kitty heaven,” he spoke, giving him a gentle nudge. 

That upset him, but not at Henry. Mercer was angry with himself and wanted to curse at the world for being unfair and for making him such a cry baby. Maybe it was selfish of him though, to wish for Moo Moo to have had more time. It would’ve prolonged the sweet cat’s pain and he didn’t want that either. “I just...didn’t want him to go alone. We were going to love him. We did love him and he didn’t get to know that.” Mercer got out in a shaky whisper, wiping at his eyes in an attempt to get the tears to stop. He gave a small nod though because he was listening and wanted to believe that. Even if he didn’t show it right now, he appreciated Henry just being here.

“Oh, uhm, nothing bad happened, just excuse the mess!” Mercer was panicking and trying his best to not show it. He was glad Danny was over because now she could see the three cats and puppy him and Henry co-parented. But the last minute visit meant he was totally unprepared, especially when the baby thestral he was housing had made a bit of a mess around the living room while bonding with Bubbles. “It was just...the pets were playing, so...” Except the coffee table was in disarray--mug and small vase of flowers broken to pieces. The pillows and blanket he had on the couch were also scattered.“They’re hyper.” He added, waving his wand to clean the mess and trying as hard as possible not to look down the hall to Henry’s door where he hid the thestral.
