Lucy took the phone from him and read the message, “Well that’s good!” she insisted gleefully, “Charlie and I… were a lot more complicated than this,” she admitted with a slight grimace, “But that’s a good sign. You’ve both said how you feel and that you want to admit. The flirty banter about the horoscope is genius on his part.”

“Complicated? How?” Oliver turned his body and looked over at Lucy. “I thought things were going well? Or did it just start off weird.” Why did having to start a relationship need to be so complicated? Was he already thinking about starting a relationship with Elliott? It was one kiss. He didn’t want to get his hopes up. “I’m glad you think it’s a good sign though.” He slid his phone back into his pocket.

“Depends on who was sitting with me before you,” she teased. “How are you, Ollie-pop?”

Oliver stuck out his tongue playfully at his sister and sat down opposite her. He leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. “Same ol’ stuff.” He said while thinking about his recent life events. “Sort of. Why don’t you go first? What’s new? Unicorns giving you any trouble lately?”

He shrugged, “It wasn’t really a vacation. Dad sent me over there to help the president out with a few things. It seemed like rogue Death Eaters, or at least their ideals, were making their way over to DC. There were a few incidents.” Teddy shook his head, “Lestrange is head over the Bloem case now, so I wasn’t really doing much over here anyway.”

“Anything like what’s going on over here?” Ben asked curiously. He liked to go on trips occasionally, but it had been a while since he had entered the States. He leaned back into his chair and held the warm mug of coffee. “It’s been... pretty interesting here. I had to question Alice the other day - those aren’t ever any fun.”

She was sitting by the window in the coffee shop, finishing reports on their recent case about an illegal unicorn breeder when she saw the other walk by their table. Danny looked up and smiled, nodding to the seat across from her. ”It’s empty if you want it. It tends to get busy in here this time of morning.”

Oliver took a seat across his sister. “Does that mean if there was someone there, you wouldn’t ask me to sit with you? That’s just rude to know that you’d toss me aside like that.”

“I leave for a few months and everything goes to shit,” he shook his head as he set the newspaper aside, raising his coffee to his lips with his free hand. “Maybe I should have just stayed in the States.”

“I know that feeling of coming back to a storm.” Ben got comfortable in his seat across from Teddy while waiting for his own coffee to cool down. “How was your break? What did you do there?”

Lucy observed his technique and nodded with approval. Not that there was much technique involved, but he was doing a good job all the same. She passed him the butter, “Now add a good amount of butter, along with some salt and plenty of pepper.” Once the potato was done, they would be that much closer to the end product being completed.  

She shrugged when he said that the double date would be a bad idea, but remained optimistic when he seemed to suggest that it was only for the time being, “I hold out hope. You owe us one double date it everything turns out good.” She took the wine and after adding a splash to the simmering meat, she poured a glass for Oliver, “Here, I think you need this.” She said, handing it to him. She waited for him to take a sip before speaking again, “Well, you need to talk to him first of all. But obviously, he must feel the same, even a little bit if he kissed you back? Generally, people don’t do that if they don’t reciprocate some of the feelings.”

Oliver took the salt and pepper and added the ingredients slowly. The one tip he learned from cooking was that it was a lot easier to add more instead of realizing you’ve added too much of an ingredient. He had completely forgotten about the wine but was glad when she had offered him a glass. He took it gladly and took a sip.

After doing so, he pulled out his phone in his back pocket and held out the text message from Elliott. “Well - we sort of said that we both liked it. This is what he sent me today, it looks like we’re meeting up again later.” Oliver took a break from mixing up the potatoes, “Is this what it was like with you and Charlie? This is fine, right?” Lucy was the only person that he had told about Elliott about and he needed some reassurance that everything would be perfectly fine.

Danny was determined not to let what he’d said about their job differences get to her, but she looked up, eyebrow slightly raised at his question. “Probably no later than 6.” She put her bag over her shoulder. “Why? Am I supposed to be home earlier for something?”

It was early in the morning, he had gotten home late last night and was dreading having to go back to work. He knew that his words were probably not coming out as nicely as they usually did when he was well rested. “No, I was just asking.” Ben stood up from the couch and turned toward Danny who looked like she was already almost out the door. The conversation seemed tense.

He wasn’t quite in the mood to decode what was going on between them, “Look, am I missing something here? If I did something wrong, can you please just tell me? I know it couldn’t have been anything from yesterday because the most I did was have a beer and fall asleep. I honestly don’t have the energy to try and figure out what’s bothering you today.”

“Oliver, you never have to feel guilty.” Lucy insisted, “Okay, so you’re not a very good liar. That doesn’t mean you should feel guilty for not telling me something that you just weren’t ready to tell me.” The vegetables and meat now cooked, Lucy turned the heat low and concentrated on the potatoes, draining them off adding a lump of butter and handing them to Oliver, “Mash them up. You don’t want any lumps in it.”

Lucy could see that he was weighing up whether to reveal the person’s identity. She was moments away from telling him that he didn’t need to tell her anything if he didn’t want to. But then in rush, he spat out a jumble of words. It took a minute to dissect what he said. Elliot. Charlie’s friend. Oliver revealing that there was a chance he was gay or at least anything but 100% straight, was somewhat surprising, but at the same time, she wasn’t exactly shocked by it either. “Elliot, huh?” she began, “That’s cool. Charlie’s friend… would it be weird if we went on a double date, do ya think?”

Oliver turned his attention to the potatoes that needed mashing. He grabbed a large utensil and poked into the soft potato. Nice and easy. He continued to squish them around, slowly getting the clumps smaller and smaller. His insides were tight once the name of the boy that he had kissed left his lips. It felt real now, it was something that more than just something that had happened between the two boys.

He worried about how Lucy would react and was relieved that she wasn’t over reacting about it. It made him feel like he could relax and not be so stressed over it, “A double date would be very weird. I think. I mean, it was just once... we haven’t really talked after. I don’t even know if there would be a date, I don’t even know what the whole kiss means for myself. It’s not like I’ve ever liked or even kissed a guy before. It just took me by surprise how it all happened.”

Lucy raised her eyebrows as he groaned, “You groaning at being caught is an even bigger give-away. If you really want to hide it, at least try and keep the lie going a little bit longer.” She said sympathetically, “I mean, I get that.” She shrugged, “I was friends with Charlie for nearly ten years, I certainly wasn’t expecting him to kiss me on New Year’s Eve. But it happened and now look at us.” She shrugged, currently, she didn’t know the exact situation that Oliver was in, but when it came to unexpected feelings, she was at least somewhat aware.

Taking the bowl of chopped onions, she added them straight into a hot frying pan and started to fry them off with the vegetables she had been chopping. Once they were browned off, she added the minced beef and the stock. “I promise. It’s our secret for as long you want it to be.”

“I feel guilty for lying. You already knew I was lying, I don’t think I could convince you that I wasn’t.” Oliver shrugged. He paused from cooking and watched as Lucy tossed the vegetables and stock into the pan. It didn’t look too hard, he was sure that he’d be able to recreate it on his own for dinner another time.

It took him a while to respond as he had his own internal debate if he should spill who he had kissed or not. Oliver had never really been in a serious relationship and he didn’t want a big deal made out of who he had kissed. After going back and forth, he scrunched his face and spat it out. “ItwasElliott.”

She nodded her head, not surprised to hear that. It was in that moment that Alice had wished she’d made copies of them though. Part of her was happy she hadn’t though, glad to be rid of them and unable to reread them later on. Rereading the letters was basically all she’d been doing, wondering who had written them. Why they hated her so much. She supposed she already had her answer to that question, but she just wondered why people hated squibs so much. It wasn’t as if her being alive affected them so much. “That’s fine.” She told him, unsure of what else she could really say since she doubted that she’d be able to get them back ever. 

Shifting uncomfortably, because there was definitely someone who came to mind but she couldn’t exactly say it. “M-Maybe my family? I’ve never exactly gotten along with them and just about all of them have expressed their dislike towards me. Not my mum and sister though.” Alice added in the last part to ensure that they wouldn’t be in trouble. It was the rest of her family that had always had issues with her. “Marcie knows, Marcelina Bloem. I uh- asked her if she’d received any because of her involvement with the trials. She hadn’t though.”

Ben nodded and scribbled a few more notes. “I don’t want you to think they’re all under investigation and have to worry more than you need to.” Ben took out his wand and waved it over the letters. Immediately, the letters flew up and out of the room - he had sent them over to his desk and decided that he would bring the evidence back to Harry once he had wrapped up the interview with Alice.

“Alright, if there’s anything else you’d like to mention, please let me know.” All of a sudden his fatigue was hitting him all at once. He suddenly became aware of how lethargic he was. “Otherwise, I think we can wrap up for now. I’ll bring up the letters to the department and we’ll let you know if we need more information.”

“Mmm-hmm,” Lucy replied, putting the potatoes onto boil, “I rather enjoyed telling her that I was right.” At the end of the day, Lucy was just incredibly happy that things had turned out, how they did. That she and Oliver had a good friendship still and that she and Charlie were now happily together. She couldn’t be certain, but since Marcie had been saying for years that Charlie liked her, Lucy had assumed that her sudden belief that she was going on a date with Oliver was simply one of her quests to get her a boyfriend, as opposed to actually thinking Oliver may have felt something for her.  

Something was off with Oliver’s answer. Lucy believed herself to be pretty good at reading people, plus if she was right and Oliver was lying, it was a pretty bad one. Everything about his stance was tense. He stopped chopping the vegetables, suggesting that he was thinking carefully about his answer, as opposed to naturally responding. “Do you really expect me to believe that?” she asked, “You don’t have to tell me anything, I won’t push. But you know full well that other people will.”

Oliver internally groaned even though he wasn’t surprised that Lucy knew he was lying. He was a terrible liar and always felt guilty for trying to deceive the other person. When she had called him out on his lie, he could already feel his face getting warm. “It’s just...” Oliver shrugged and took a moment to try and describe his situation. “It’s just with someone I wasn’t really expecting. It feels weird to say what happened to someone else. You know?”

He grabbed an empty bowl and slid the chopped onions into them. He walked over to the other side of the kitchen with the cutting board and slid over all of the leftover bits into the trash. He bit his lower lip, “You won’t tell anyone, right?”

“No, I’m not and I get that, Ben.” she looked at him and shrugged. “I have to go help Ana with a baby dragon and in all honesty, I feel like this conversation is going to go in circles, so there’s no real point to me keeping it going.”

“Er, okay then.” Ben said, unsure if he was fully convinced or not. He didn’t know if it was just because he was tired, but he was having difficulty telling what state of mind Danny was at. “I’ll just see you later? What time do you think you’ll be home today?” Although it was a simple question - the words came out a bit more brash than he had intended.
