I just got a tgwdlm au idea:

What if Emma was in on the apotheosis all along?

• This is based off that “the opening song is the finale” thing and that “the show is actually a loop until Paul succumbs to the apotheosis” thing

• “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals” opens the show, telling us how the story starts, how they want Paul to bend to their will to join them in the number, but he just wouldn’t. He doesn’t enter when they tell him to and he just casually takes a seat like nothing is happening.

• And people have pointed out that what if this show is the last time Paul defies the Hive because it was later said “You, Paul have defied us thrice” sounded like the apotheosis has happened before. So what if everyone except Paul, but including Emma was infected in the prior apotheosis?

• Because Emma’s in the opening song too. She’s singing and dancing and revealing how Paul actually had feelings for her. The Hive will eventually use this to get Paul infected too. What if she found out about Paul’s feelings for her in the prior apotheosis and that’s how she knew in the opening song?

• What if she already was infected and throughout the show that we see, she’s just acting out the role of being uninfected, just like everyone else? And it works in getting Paul to trust her

• What if her planting the idea for Paul to get to the meteor was intentional, so Paul could really become infected?

Is Ted a Workin Boy?

Think about it. In the Workin Boys pitch it explains that all the boys ended up working in business. Well what does Ted do as s job? He’s in the business career. Also, note when Hidgens is giving the pitch, Ted is staring away as if he’s recounting his own time back with the guys, and when he says ‘Chad’ it’s almost like thinking back to a friendship long ago.

Then why isn’t Ted’s name one of the Workin Boys names?. Well there could be a couple explanations. One is that maybe Hidgens didn’t name all of the boys, maybe because Ted had a falling out with the group or something so Hidgens wants a story without Ted in the picture?

Or, what I like to go with, is that Ted is one of the Workin Boys mentioned, but again, had a huge falling out with the group, or even just Henry, so Henry, not wanting to entirely take his old friend out of the picture, just changed his name (or Ted could’ve changed his name for whatever reason). I like to think that Ted is actually Greg, because when he’s listening to the call, it’s like he himself is recalling it and thinking “Henry actually remembers the conversation so vividly?” Like he thought Henry would just remove Ted from the picture entirely but nope, Henry still clearly cares!

But then what about when Greg and Stu come in. Henry is so convinced that they’re the real deal. Well Emma says “Professor, that’s not Greg!”. Sure she’s probably saying that because he’s infected, but what if Emma, when she delivered Henry’s groceries, saw a picture of the group, and could clearly tell this guy wasn’t one of them (she’d also probably realise that Ted is the real Greg but doesn’t bring it up). Henry was just so in the moment and wanting the old days back that he convinced himself that it was Greg, or at least the best parts (cause of the whole Ted falling out thing) and we know that the aliens use whatever knowledge they can get to manipulate their target (see Alice in ‘Not Your Seed’).

And if you think about all of this, and if Henry knows who Ted is, then Show Stoppin Number could just be an angsty “this could have been us!” Song from Henry to Ted.

So yeah, tldr, Ted was a Workin Boy who had a falling out with the others so Henry changed his name to Greg for the sake of trying to move on while also not really. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

ace jon appreciation

the following is a short but heartfelt list of the reasons I appreciate jon’s canon confirmation of asexuality and the way he is portrayed. this is not a comprehensive list, this is merely what comes to the top of my brain right now.

(before i start, please note that these are based on my personal interaction with the podcast and my everyday experience as an ace person. this isn’t meant to be applicable to the entire ace community because my experiences aren’t universal)

it’s not a Big Thing. even the canon confirmation was short (maybe a little too short, but only by a word or two), and nobody has brought it up again. it’s just a part of him that nobody really remarks on like it’s unusual, because it is nowhere near the most unusual thing happening in their lives.

he still gets a love interest. and that love interest is a non-ace person, who (presumably) knows jon is ace (if it was ‘office gossip’ then martin has to know), and doesn’t care. this is so refreshing. it’s genuinely the first time i’ve seen this in any media, and that’s really helpful for me, an ace who is still interested in dating and terrified because the way most relationships are depicted now it seems impossible.

there is no canon confirmation of whether or not jon knows the term ‘asexual’ or has heard of/interacted with the ace community, because i personally can’t form a coherent headcanon on whether he has or not, and so i’m glad canon hasn’t made me choose between the scenarios.

last but not least, tma doesn’t use the “ace people are heartless” stereotype. it would have been so easy. so easy for them to say that, especially given how jon behaved in s1 to most everyone. but instead, what we’ve seen is an ace character who, even as he is becoming a literal monster, is the most human he’s ever been. i mean he wanted to go back into the buried to save people he’d never even met. he did go into the buried to save a woman who had tried to kill him the last time they met. because he cares so much. 

all this is to say that i love jonathan sims so much and i’m so happy for the existence of his character

and although that relationship ended, he has a good friendship with that ex now

this is all confirmed in the canon in the same breath

Jon’s general “urgh” reaction to mentions of other people’s sex lives and his confusion in regard to relationships are never done in a way that is mocking him (although i find it hilarious)

this might not be deliberate, but it just makes so much sense to me that he’s ended up surrounded with women and has various easy friendships with so many of them, and even the ones that don’t like him and wouldn’t call him a friend still enjoy his company (I’m thinking of Melanie in particular). It just makes complete sense to me that all these women, even without knowing he’s ace, feel comfortable with him… because he is completely non-flirty and non-sexually-threatening.
