After researching many landmarks, I came across St. Catherine's Church. I was intrigued by the history of the place, especially after learning that Robert Emmet was executed in front of it. I talked with a few of my classmates and I found out that none of them knew who Robert Emmet was.

I decided that that could not be, as he was one of Ireland's most prominent revolutionaries in the mid-19th century. I felt like it was my duty to spread the story of Robert Emmet around so that his sacrifice would not be in vain.

St. Catherines Church also has a soup kitchen and a public pantry, which tends to the homeless of the city, I felt like I could incorporate those two groups of people into one illustration, the abandoned homeless and the misunderstood revolutionary, both a byproduct of unjust colonialism. I created a political cartoon which could hopefully spark the interest of many passerby's, unfortunately, I could not hang it up due to family matters I had to attend to overseas.

#MISSINGLIBERTIES

The Liberties in Dublin 8 has long been an area of significant historical importance, with many buildings centuries old and each one with a story to tell. The neighbourhood has deep-rooted traditions and yet is driven into the future, as new businesses and accommodation is built around the area. However, with all this new development, older businesses and systems are being squeezed out of the places they have occupied for years, often unable to keep up with rising costs. Gentrification and the demolition of historical landmarks has been hitting The Liberties hard - and the aim of #missingliberties is to ask: where did they go?

NCAD - Student Living

My project centers on addressing the critical need for student accommodations at NCAD. This piece was made to raise awareness of the need for Student living and possibly change the college's view on investing in it.

Arthur Guinness

For my project I wanted to focus on Arthur Guinness who actually founded the Guinness factory. I delved deep into the history of him and what type of man he was. I created two poster designs both trying to portray the research on him I had found.

Molyneux Yard is nestled in the heart of Dublin, in the Liberties. Its equestrian history dates back to the 1800s, and today its stables are important to many, including carriage drivers, bringing tourism and attention to this area. A horse community has been passed down generationally and built up over the years.

In recent times, the Council put out plans for a hotel, which would destroy not only the stables, but the playground and walkways in the area, and the historical cobblestone alleyway. The community, including Norwigi, a Scandinavian travelling musician, protested and rallied against the building of this hotel. The plans of the hotel were delayed and then called off for the near future.

This detective board was created as a homage to these protesters, showing that community action matters and creates change. I created fake newspapers to tell the real story of what happened, collected and took photographs, reached out for accounts, gathered these and displayed. Resulting in a detective board around the corner to Molyneux Lane.

A grey horse with a beautiful mane and tail, clopping through the streets led by a tracksuited youth; that is the nature of the Dublin horse culture. I spread these illustrated stickers through the streets, hoping to reach an audience that relates to this character, and for others to appreciate the candid freedom expressed through urban horseback riding.

A series of reportage illustrations exploring student life in the Liberties. Drawn on location at Lucky's, Bounceback Cafe, Lovetempo, John's, Dudley's and the Goodies, the series of posters serve as a documentation of the people who make up the Liberties' student subculture. The drawings were collected in my notebook and rearranged to hopefully create a picture of the atmosphere and bustle of these venues. The project was displayed in NCAD's red square, at the heart of the student culture. A long horizontal concertina was also produced to concisely document the project in full.

In my research, I discovered that in 2028 during the construction of a new hotel, the remnants of an 11th-century settlement were found., This settlement was similar to the one found at Wood Quay in the 1970s. Artefacts found at both settlements were moved to the National Museum of Ireland and construction continues. At Wood Quay now Dublin City Council offices stand and on Dean Street, where a centuries-old settlement once stood, now stands another hotel. The first part of my project focuses on combining this Hiberno-Norse community with a modern-day hotel 

  They both represent the beginning of a Hiberno-Norse community in Ireland. These were some of the first settlements that would later become the Dublin we know today. These settlements were created by migrants. I thought it would be interesting to point out the irony of how proud our city is of its Viking origins in spite of a growing movement of racists and fascists who are terrified of “Military men” entering their country.

When you grow up in a small town, far beyond the Pale, you are taught to fear the mean, heartless, crime-ridden streets of the Big Smoke. There is nothing that raises provincial eyebrows quite like announcing that you are crossing the country to spend your college years in Dublin’s inner city — a prejudice which has only continued to bug me since I moved here almost two years ago. As I was very close to studying History at third level, I decided to combine that old love with this one, and here is the result!

My project, “Just So Liberties” is focused on the rich tapestry of D8’s history, from the whimsical to the macabre to the wonderfully humane, repackaging these historical anecdotes into a series of pop-up paper artworks that both locals and passers-through can interact with and learn from. I believe that educating yourself about the world around you is very important — but history shouldn’t be a slog! It was my hope to engage the viewer with the piece, to make them a part of it, and maybe leave them with a different impression of this area than what is fed to us.

Hello, my name is Willow shanagher, 

As part of the Streets and Stories project I wanted to highlight the loss of sporting facilities and homes within the liberties as a result of gentrification. I primarily researched one of the oldest boxing clubs within the liberties: The Donore boxing club. I wanted to demonstrate the challenges faced by sporting facilities through three fake boxing matches where three champions of the area each face the dreaded dastardly Joe the Gentrifier. I placed the posters outside of any abandoned sights or student accommodations within the liberties, to highlight how much of the area has been lost to gentrification. The final section of this project was the unfortunate victory of Joe the Gentrifier, which took place outside the Donore Boxing Club’s original and now abandoned facility.

St James Gate Brewery

This project is a celebratory homage to Guinness. Arthur Guinness founded St. James Gate Brewery in 1759. He signed a 9,000 year lease and the rent was £45 per year. Since then, the popularity of Guinness rapidly spread throughout Ireland and the rest of the world.

I included animals in this poster as many of the iconic Guinness posters by John Gilroy included them which made the posters memorable. The history of Guinness is intriguing and it's impossible to not be fascinated walking by the brewery where it all began...
