The Banjaxxed Rats and the Thomas House Bar
I was interested in the music scene around Dublin, specially that of Vicar Street and the Thomas House Bar.
Back in 2018, I remember waiting in my parent’s car for about an hour as my sister was at a concert in the Vicar Street venue. It was dark, and we were parked right outside. All I had to entertain myself at that moment was look around at Thomas Street and make up stories. The story I created, as an angsty 14 year old, was that of a struggling musician trying to make it big in Dublin. 6 years later, the story still lives in my head. The designs have changed, and the story has too, but the setting remains the same—The Liberties. The plan for my story is to make a comic or graphic novel for my Final Year Degree Show, but I wanted to incorporate it into this project. The comic even opens with the main character playing a gig at the Thomas House, so for this project I decided to advertise said gig, even if it just imagined.
The poster features the main character, Jack, in front of the curtains featured in Thomas House’s venue. His band name is the ‘Banjaxxed Rats’, so to get more coverage, along with pasting up the posters, I made additional stickers to add to poles and such around the Liberties. As the poster says, maybe one day the Banjaxxed Rats will make it big in Dublin, but I don’t think it’s too early to start advertising, as well as advertising the Thomas House (my favourite pub).
