and, in “rapunzel’s return”, rapunzel says “varian! tell [the separatists] to stand down!”
varian shouts “never!”, andrew lifts a hand to quiet him, and he goes silent to focus on andrew.
later in that episode, varian points out that they agreed no one would be harmed. andrew says “relax, buddy”, and, as he pushes varian’s accusing finger down, varian is quiet.
i’m not blaming quirin for the actions of corona, but, if he’d been a more open parent, i could see a universe where varian balks at andrew’s attempts to shut him up. if his dad honored his thoughts and feelings, he’d be able to connect the dots that something’s off about his and andrew’s dynamic.
i don’t know if that would have happened (again, i could see a universe), because varian’s choices were incredibly limited post-arrest.
if he didn’t join andrew, he would have had to wait for rapunzel to try to find him, and, at this point, he has very little reason to expect that. even if she did sincerely want to make amends, she’d be busy with the whole “cassandra’s betrayal” thing.
either he’s sitting in a cell until the demanitus scroll comes into play, or the separatists most likely would have forced him to join them.
the point is: better-parent-quirin could have been the catalyst for varian betraying the separatists sooner… or, at least, for more conflict in his and andrew’s relationship, instead of the very disheartening similarities to the one he had with his dad.
