I've made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgement

So I have a theory that the vat7k creators perhaps picked the ages they did for Nuru (16), Yong (12) and Hugo (19) because team radical is meant to reflect the different stages of Varian's character from the show.

Yong - S1 (Pilot) Varian: enthusiastic, filled with youthful joy, untameable impulse to be curious, to explore and to experiment.

Hugo - S2 (Separatist) Varian: living a survival path, working for morally questionable people out of necessity, in a dark place mentally.

Nuru - S3 (Redeemed) Varian: responsibility-driven, hyper focus on "making things better" for their people and trying to find their place in noble society.

Like I genuinely think Varian finding sense of belonging with (literal) like-minded people like them is narratively helping him look inward—to confront parts of himself throughout his youth that he still criticize to this day as an adult and learn to love himself through relating to their struggles and forming bonds with each one of them.

His friendship with team radical helps him to make peace with his past and that development sets him up to be the kind of person to team radical that he wished he had when he was in the same position as them once upon a time.

Why didn't Varian figure out Hugo was working for Donella earlier?

Hey y'all, no Varian slander I swear but I've noticed a lot of interpretations where Varian doesn't find out about Hugo's relationship with Donella until the final confrontation at the library. We know that Varian is a highly observant person and that most of his good friends from tts are former thieves so he probably knows what tells the look for when someone's lying.

That being said, he also know that Varian was suspicious of Hugo at first. It's possible that he could've dismissed him as a common thief without any connections to a larger group.

Anyways, I just want to hear some of y'all's takes on this in general

i like to think Varian knew, on some level, that something was off about Hugo. but by the time those particular suspicions started creeping in, he’d already grown too attached. he chose to ignore the signs because he wanted to believe Hugo would change. that when it came down to it, Hugo would choose him over whatever he was hiding

Varian took a leap of faith. he wanted to believe Hugo was capable of changing in the same way he had (of course, this is Varian we’re talking about. the same guy who symathized with his kidnapper).

..and, to give Hugo some credit, he did choose Varian over Donella way before Corona, Donella just made it seem like a betrayal

literally. people say Hugo is “toxic” or “abusive” when… he’s not even an established character 😭❓ if Hugo is abusive, it’s because YOU wrote him that way. he doesn’t have a canon personality, just concepts of one!!😭😭 the version of Hugo you’re talking about is the one YOU created bro😭‼️
