“My battery is low and it is getting dark” weren’t Oppy’s literal last words, her last message to earth was a readout of her battery power and light sensor readings, something that I think is nonetheless sad. But what I find astounding is we’ve translated that last message into language that is so poetic and humane, and IMO that speaks powerfully of the lengths that human empathy can reach. I really think that says something beautiful, and I need to go hug my Roomba.

A 5,000-year-old tree in Scotland is giving itself a sex change. The male Fortingall Yew has been producing pollen for as long as scientists have been studying it, but in 2015, the tree suddenly sprouted berries in a rare occurrence that means at least part of the tree is now transitioning to female. This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his Horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks. Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has. He says the secret to keeping the moose around is a sweet salt lick, although, during the rut he disappears for a couple of weeks, but always comes home…. Impressive !! MINNESOTA CLYDESDALE
