I FOUND YOU. Y'know, when your fanfic was still incomplete, I was left like a dog with rabies, trying to bite everything because wdym you just left it there. I dropped everything. And then when I came back, IT WAS COMPLETE! I AM IN HEAVEN. I am taking it slow. One chapter a day. Because my heart CANNOT take me binge reading everything all at once.
I need to know, what was your inspiration? Do you really think Stoick is just as bad as a father as he is? How do you write like you? Do you have any tips on how to write fanfics for new HTTYD fans?
Hi there! sorry for the late reply, I haven't checked this account in a few days. I'm so glad you enjoy the fic! Just so you know, the story's not over yet ;) the first sequel is underway now!
As for my inspiration: there was another fic (that I have since lost, if anyone knows which one it is please let me know) where Hiccup had left Berk and ended up with Viggo years later, and Viggo asked him to come along to convince another tribe to stop hurting dragons without telling Hiccup that it was Berk. Berk, unbeknownst to Hiccup, believed that Hiccup was dead.
I was inspired by the basic concept of Hiccup leaving Berk and them thinking he was dead without him realizing it at first, and then him ending up with Viggo down the line. The rest just kind of came to me like a vision from an angry god. I texted my lovely beta @shire-baird (who puts up with so much shit from me, bless her) for several hours in the middle of the night about the concept. Little things changed between the original concept and the final result, but the core of it stayed intact.
In terms of Stoick, that's a complicated answer. Do I think he's a good father? Absolutely not. It's a miracle (and, let's be real, probably self worth issues) that Hiccup ever forgave him. Do I think he was as outright neglectful as he is in the fic? Probably not. But he easily could have been. A lot of this fic boils down to "what would have happened if people made slightly different choices?" and all of those choices lead back to Stoick completely checking out of fatherhood. This led to Hiccup leaving, leaving Stoick, in turn, to become even more bitter and more stubborn.
As for how I write, honestly, my biggest piece of advice is to let the characters feel what they feel. My writing is very character driven, and I've described my process multiple times as 'X character grabbed me by the shirt and dragged me along'. For example, Viggo was originally not the simp to end all simps, but when I was writing the first chapter he decided that's how he wanted to be written and I didn't fight him on it. The Gobber Interlude was originally going to be a single scene in 4 that made up a chapter, and then he dragged me along for 14k instead.
As a writer, your job is to make a story the reader gives a shit about, and enough of a shit about to keep reading. The best way to do that is to let emotion drive the story. How do your characters feel about any given event? How does that feeling drive their actions? The most simple and boring plot in the world can be a fantastic read if the characters are good enough.
Overall, my biggest advice for new fanfic authors is to write whatever the hell you want to. This is your fic, and it is, by definition, a passion project, a labor of love. Don't let comments (or lack thereof) discourage you! (On my old fanfiction.net account, someone once told me my writing 'read like the cliff notes in a drug addicts notebook.' Shitty attitude towards those struggling with addiction aside, the point is, all your favorite authors have had negative reviews.) This is your story, and you don't have to change it for anyone. If someone doesn't like the format, or how you portray a character, then they can open a doc and write something themselves.
Don't motivate yourself with the words of others. do it for you, and no one else. That's how all my best fics are written, and that's how I started actually finishing fics: by caring less about what others wanted my fic to be and just writing it for myself. It feels like much less of a chore that way. And it should never be a chore, because fandom is a space of passion for the source material, not a 9-5.
Also, this might sound weird, but if you want natural sounding dialogue, try saying it out loud! It will be a lot more obvious that something doesn't sound like anything a real person would say if you try saying it out loud and it doesn't sound right.

Gobber is overjoyed to find out Hiccup is alive, and is ready to leave everything behind if it means never going another day without seeing him. But Hiccup has lived six years without him, and he's lived six years without Hiccup. His boy is grown, grew up without him, and Gobber doesn't know where he fits into Hiccup's life now.
Hiccup made a life for himself these past six years. He found his brother, he's nearly ended the Dragon Trade once and for all, for the first time in more than a decade he has people he can call genuine friends, Hel, he even fell in love and got married. But there was one thing missing: his dad. It may have taken a certified shit show and far more people finding out that Hiccup Haddock is still alive than Hiccup ever wanted, but the silver lining of it all is that he finally gets to welcome his dad to his home.
Viggo would move mountains to make Hiccup happy. Thankfully, that's not necessary. But there is a need for a new blacksmith's stall in the forge and a new house down the road from theirs. What's the point of being a Chief if you can't roll out the red carpet for your father-in-law?
Family is more than blood, and the Norn's tapestry is far from finished.

writing is impossible why does anyone do this
Hey guys, this came up in the discord server, and I decided to make a tumblr post about it.
When I was 13, I posted a fic on fanfiction.net. 5 years later, I received a veryā¦ letās say critical comment on it. I didnāt actually see this comment until earlier this year. I have cut out the username and anything to identify the fic itself, but this was the comment:
Now, setting aside the shitty attitude towards people struggling with drug addiction, Iāll admit the writing wasnāt very good. But I was 13 years old. (Also, for the screaming for reviews part, this was actually very common on fanfiction.net at the time, and I was looking to improve my writing, so I was asking for constructive criticism, though my undiagnosed autistic ass probably didnāt come off that way.)
Constructive criticism is one thing, and itās appropriate when itās asked for. This is not constructive criticism. This is just being a jackass. And no, there was no real way for this commenter to know that the fic was written by a literal child. But itās still dick behavior either way.
If I hadnāt moved over to Ao3 several years prior and stopped checking for comments on my ff.net account by then, I would have seen this comment when I was 18. And I very well might have stopped writing for good.
Now, I am 24. By the time I saw this comment I had several pretty successful fics under my belt. I knew I was a better writer by then, and the comment didnāt affect my confidence in my skill now. But a part of me ached for the universe in which I saw that comment when I was 18, when I had taken a break from writing for the most part, when I still wasnāt sure if I was any good at it.
I donāt say all this to brag, or to dunk on that original commenter. I say all this because skills grow. Skills take practice, skills take work. And that work doesnāt get done if the person trying to grow those skills gets discouraged by some jackass telling them their writing is āamazingly poorly writtenā.
Skills are not the kind of thing that grow best in adversity.
To all the young/new writers out there, to anyone who may have gotten a shitty comment like this and actually seen it, donāt quit. People are assholes for no reason sometimes. Chances are your writing isnāt actually that bad. Even if it is, you will get better! You have great ideas and the passion to put them on paper, and even if it doesnāt turn out exactly the way you wanted it to, one day it will.
We say all the time ādo it stupid, do it badly, do it scaredā and weāre right to say that! But donāt be an asshole when someone does that and it doesnāt turn out perfect. Donāt discourage a young/new writer, or even an older writer thatās been doing it for decade, because their āamazingly poorly writtenā writing may one day move people to tears, as several people in my comments have told me my writing does now.
Donāt give up. Keep practicing. Keep growing.
