My Journey as a Nature Interpreter
The last 3 months in this course have been very helpful to me in my future career. I am going to be going to be going to teachers collage in May to learn how to become a high school level science teacher. I included the below video because I believe it perfectly explains the main challenge that I will be facing in this career which is getting students interested in the subject I will be teaching:
This video mentions that the best teachers are the ones that can make you interested and passionate about the subject they are teaching. Instead of using the word spark he says flame, but the main responsibility of my job is to create the spark in my students for science. I think that it is a shame that so many students are turned off of this subjects because it is seen as boring and/or difficult. I believe that teachers have the huge responsibility of shaping the lives of young people so it makes me very frustrated when I hear horror stories about teachers who don’t put their full effort into their jobs. It is my goal to become one of the (unfortunately) few teachers who are able to inspire their students.
I am hoping to give the gift of a spark to as many students as I can. One of my main strengths that will help me with this is my enthusiasm for science and my love of teaching. This will allow me to continuously try to find new and interesting ways to present my material. I currently tutor a range of students from elementary school to high school and I love finding ways to explain concepts in new ways that are easier to understand. I also love to see a new confidence in my students as they discover that they can understand these concepts and this usually leads to a new appreciation for how cool science actually is.
I believe that science teachers are essentially nature interpreters. This is because they are trying to convey information about life and the way that the world works in a way that is understandable to their audience. A major constraint that teachers have is their limited access to the outdoors. Instead of letting the experience of nature and beauty speak for itself, teachers have to find a way to bring the world’s beauty and wonder into a classroom. Therefore I think the gift of beauty is something that is often missed in science classrooms. I am hoping to bring this gift back through the use of pictures and videos. As a lot of you probably know from past blog posts, I think BBC’s Planet Earth series is an awesome way to convey the beauty of nature because its imagery is absolutely stunning and was actually one of the main things that gave me the spark for nature and science. Therefore I am hoping to incorporate videos like this to also help my students see the beauty in science.
I think using the gift of a story will also help me to make my subjects as interesting as possible. I believe that sometimes these subjects can seem disconnected from the lives of students. I am hoping to make learning more interesting by presenting facts as a story that will engage students and make them want to learn more. I believe that one of the main reasons why students become disengaged is because they feel like they are learning useless information that they will never use. I am hoping to also use real-life stories from the media or real life examples so that students will feel like they are learning something worth while.

Lastly, I believe the main thing missing from most science classrooms is hands on experience in the real world. Field trips are an extremely valuable way to get students engaged and interested in class material. One of my favourite memories from my high school biology class was our field trip to the Toronto Zoo. It was an awesome way to get us engaged in our biodiversity unit because we were able o physically see and explore the biodiversity of the world. This also made our subsequent assignment on the trip more interesting because we were able o talk about our own experiences instead of looking up and writing about the experiences of others. I was also fortunate enough to be able to take an ecology course at my high school that was largely experienced based. At least 3 times a week we were able to be outside collecting data or learning about the things we were seeing in nature. However, real world experiences don’t have to just come from the outside world. Valuable lessons can also be taught in the classroom by doing simple experiments or by brining in objects of interest into the classroom to make learning more fun.
I hope to continue learning on my journey as a nature interpreter and continue to inspire students to pursue science in their future careers. This course was very helpful in highlighting some key strategies and gifts that I can give my students to help them understand my lessons. I would love to hear your thoughts about any gifts or strategies that I may have left out that would help me on my future journey!
You’d make such a good teacher! It’s kind of scary how many bad teachers there actually are out there. Especially when you consider how hard it seems to be for new teachers to get positions at the moment. How did all these bad teachers get in? Even now during university I can’t count the number of times during the course selection period I’ve had conversations with friends that go a bit like this, can you relate?
Friend 1: “hey ever taken [blank] course before...I’m thinking of taking it?”
Friend 2: “oh that’s taught by Dr [name]....he’s seriously aweful, I wouldn’t wish that class on my worst enemy”
While I try to take classes that sound like they might be useful regardless of how hard they may be (I’m not paying to just learn things I could of figured out on my own after all), I have defintely steered away from classes that otherwise may have been fantastic simply because everyone who has ever had a class with that prof swears they’re satan incarnate. Rude attitudes, boring monotone lectures, and disorganized chaotic assignments leave students running for the hills and never looking back. But I’ve also experienced the total opposite. Classes I would of never thought I’d be enjoying, made fun by amazing professors. I’m no computer geek, but these days I actually enjoy coding in R...or at least I hate it significantly less than I used to. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have Orbax for physics in first year for example all probably have fond memories of his crazy antics to keep hundreds of disinterested biology majors entertained for a sememster of definitely not biology. Good teachers can draw a student into a subject just as fast as a bad teacher can send them running. Lets hope our schools fill with more good teachers in the future, as it already seems like too many people are simply not passionate about anything, having been scared away rather than drawn in by each teacher they encountered.
Where I’m at, and where to go from here
University can be an interesting time. Many of your friendships sprout out of mutual dislikes of schoolwork that makes your head feel like it will explode. Trying to both enjoy and hang on to parts of being a young person while simultaneously focusing on your next steps into the professional working world is a delicate balance. Your music taste, favourite show on Netflix and your life goals can change day to day, creating a weird combination of instability and excitement. You’ve got so much going on that time to process anything is sacrificed because you’re too busy doing the damn thing.
For me, what strikes a balance, connects me with people of similar interests, and adds an element of stability while maintaining excitement is my relationship with nature. Freezing, scorching, rainy, sunny, bright, or dark (damn you daylight standard time). Programmed or informal. On payday or when you’re in the hole. In sickness and in health. Taking a deep breath in the outside air never fails to rebalance, refocus, and reconnect me. And in most cases, it’s just fun. So of course I want to share this with others.
My perspective on nature as an interpreter (and I’m sure this will change) has developed quite a bit, in a few different ways. Beyond the clear conclusion that nature is lovely and fun and should be enjoyed by all, this is my current assessment.
The belief that nature has the powerful possibility to be a common ground. Allow me to be a bit sappy here. In our daily lives, in cities and towns, surrounded by human made buildings and roads and stuff, it’s easy to divide, to see self and other, and to think those differences are significant. When surrounded by things that truly are other, from the ground and all that grows to the sky and all that is, it’s a reminder that we are all just humans. From this understanding, nature can definitely solve a lot of the worlds problems, as we’ve discussed many times in class.
Connections to nature are step one in conserving it. Who we vote for, and what we advocate for has always been important. In 2018, particularly in the political climate of our closest allies, our societal challenges seem to feel very heavy. Threats to natural features across the world feel eminent, and as someone with a connection to nature, it feels like a strong call to advocate for what I value, which includes conservation. To those who haven’t had the same opportunities to connect to nature, how can I expect them to feel the same? I think it’s important to giving people context of nature and the environment and allowing them to decide how they feel from there, even if they don’t feel the same as I do.
With strong beliefs comes great responsibility? I think my panic of impending environmental disasters and natural losses can certainly make me feel that way. What? How can you not feel the same way as I do? Now I have to convert you to the right side! Accepting that that isn’t really my role is still a work in progress, and instead I try to channel that into enthusiasm for what I interpret. This also comes with the acknowledgement that not everyone has had the opportunities that I have to be introduced to the concepts that I have, or to connect with nature. Whether due to ability or circumstance, heading into interpretation with the intent to include varied demographics is a responsibility. Bringing more people to the table (or into the woods) has the potential to enhance everyone’s experience, because everyone has something to share.
This class gave me an opportunity to try some different interpretation formats, and some connected more with me than others.
Unscripted interpretation → not in a classroom/formal presentation writing. I enjoy interpretation most when I don’t have a script, just a general sense of what message I want to portray, a few solid interesting facts, and my ability to create discussion which would drive the flow of the conversation. I also know from past experiences that I enjoy interpreting most on a one-on-one or two or three people. In this format, the audience genuinely gets the chance to ask you questions about what interests them, there is much less pressure to be scripted, and I feel like I can be a much more real human.
Active interpretation → let me move! I’m not good at listening to people for more than five minutes in one location, so I don’t like making people listen to me for more than that time. Giving people tactile and hands on content is very up my alley.
Interpretation through writing → coming into it, I really thought this blog would be a task and a nuisance, I didn’t really realize how much I would enjoy writing in this format. I think I am able to still portray my personality through writing, and I find it a healthy challenge to write in a compelling way each week. I might continue into my field school next semester!
In the spirit of reflection…
Two last things:
Going out west for a season and plans to return again have definitely made me biased towards the large scale, classic beauty of the mountains. Being slightly bitter to come home to Southern Ontario, this class definitely gave me a kick in the pants to try to embrace the pieces of nature I have around me. I have enjoyed my many walks in the Arboretum this semester, and I think I’ve finally got it through my head that just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s not as good. School life doesn’t have to equal inside life, and I’ve definitely stopped skipping out on the nature I have access to on a daily basis.

Great idea to go through the various methods of interpretation and identify which ones you connected with the most. I also have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time, so I really enjoyed the active forms of interpretation such as our guided janes walks which were all so much fun. As interpreters I found it useful to plan our interpretation as a series of activies with lines of thought connecting them together. This way we can ensure our audience has lots of things to DO rather than just hearing us talk for a long time (especially since I tend to be a bit of a chatter box when I get enthusiatic about something). I’ve actually written blogs before, so I knew that writing and storytelling were comfortably forms of interpretation for me. When I was in elementary school I actually started my first nature interpretation one, although I didn’t know that’s what it was called at the time. I think the topic that changed my view on interpretation the most was our gift of history week. At first I thought this only applied to cultural/ historical interpretation but I quickly realised that it could actually be applied to natural interpretation too as every place has a history. I’d never really thought of this before. What was the topic that taught you the most do you think?
Finding Our Path to the Future
Wow last blog post! As we wrap up this semester and head into exams it seems fitting to look towards the future. For me especially I’ve found I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what the future might hold for me. As I complete my 4th and final year, with no immediate plans of continuing into a master’s program I find myself continuously faced with the question ‘what’s next’? From friends, or family, to people I barely know and have only just met, it seems like everyone expects me to have some well thought out plan. Some step by step instructions to the rest of my life. And for the first time I don’t. I’ve always been that kid who plans things out 10 steps into the future. For example. I knew I was going to Guelph for University before I even started high school. I never even applied anywhere else – how crazy is that?
I’ve been interpreting nature since I first learnt to walk and talk. When I was very little I remember my favourite cartoon being Winnie the Pooh, and in a slightly funny full circle in highschool I somehow got the nickname ‘Christopher Robin’. If you think about it the similarities are pretty fun – you probably know Christopher Robin was an English boy, but did you know Pooh was a Canadian bear? A bit of a coincidence that I ended up falling in love with Canadian wildlife then huh? But what does a love for nature look like in the ‘real world’? And perhaps more importantly, what does it look like for me? Of course, that’s not to say I don’t have any plans. No quite the opposite. I feel like I have a mountain of goals and dreams, I just haven’t quite found the path to climb up yet. I want to travel; to explore the hidden crevices of this world, to walk the paths less travelled, and those well travelled too.
I remember the first time I read about Darwin’s adventure on the Beagle as a small child, and thought to myself ‘now that would be cool’. But people don’t really go on grand adventures to plot the mysteries of the continents anymore. There’s this unspoken feeling amongst people that we’ve already discovered everything there is to discover on this planet. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why so many adults think of the natural sciences as a ‘kid thing’. Because it seems simple. Easy to understand. With no mysteries left unsolved. Now obviously that isn’t the case – new species are still being discovered everyday…they just tend not to be the big fluffy megafauna anymore (although I bet there are still a couple of those hidden deep in the amazon rainforests or other places we still have yet to even look). For example, did anyone hear of the new species of lichen that was actually just discovered in our own Guelph Arboretum???!! That’s right, not just new to Guelph or Canada, this species of lichen has literally never been described before. This is a full on Darwin level discovery happening right in our own backyard…just on a slightly smaller size scale.
Now I’m sure every naturalist dreams of discovering a new species. Who here hasn’t fantasized what you might name your very own species if you got the chance? (BTW, if anyone here ever gets the chance just a little reminder you are 100% allowed to name a species after a Pokémon – and in fact you wouldn’t be the first scientist to do so!)

But I also can’t quite see myself just burying myself deep into research on an obscure taxa of lichen, fungi, or small aquatic invertebrates. I’m too painfully aware that we’re losing species on this planet faster than we can ever hope to identify them. How many stunningly unique, intricately beautiful species that we will never even know existed do you suppose we’ve lost just in the time I’ve been writing this post I wonder? As scientists, nay, as humans, I believe we have a responsibility to teach others about the wonders of this world we live in. And that’s where nature interpretation comes into my view of my future.
This tiny little bug creates a bubble of sap around it from the branch it is drinking from. The sticky sap protects the little guy from any potential predators, or simply being knocked off the branch by a gust of wind. Stunningly beautiful and super unique, they live high up in the cloud forests of Ecuador. But how many more cool critters like this still hide in the mysterious crevices of the world? And how many more will we loose before we even learn of their existance?
Like many of you, I grew up on a healthy diet of David Attenborough, Steve Irwin, National Geographic, Last Chance to See, Sea Shephard, and many others. My mum’s family comes from a background of theatre, so I grew up on the stage and performed roles in shows such as Anne, Peter Pan, and Oliver Twist before I reached the age of 8. Not to say the roles were ever major – I’m not child star here, but being a background extra or small side role gives you lots of time to spend backstage learning how the world of theatre works. There was actually a period of time in my life when I contemplated just pursuing acting seriously, but the natural world always drew me back. Nature documentaries and interpretation seemed like the obvious way to combine these two passions of mine, so I became obsessed with watching the behind the scenes of every documentary or movie I watched (yes that even includes all 26hours of extra footage on the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings movies!). I’d love to get the opportunity to work on the next major Planet Earth style movie, whether as an interpreter, videographer, or even just the sound guy – it’s all honestly super interesting to me! One possible path I’m contemplating taking in the future is actually taking a graduate degree in videography or documentary making to learn more about the skills of this trade.
This brings us to the ‘ethics’ part of the prompt. Across the history of documentary making there has been the ethical dilemma of whether or not the documentary makers should interfere with what they are watching. In nature documentaries this becomes part of the ‘should we interfere with nature or simply let nature be nature’ question. My own personal take on this is that since we has humans are doing so much damage to the world ecosystems already, if we can do some good is that really so bad? Now obviously this leads to the question of what is ‘good’. There are many things in nature that are seemly brutal, but this is simply part of the chaotic beauty of nature. But when the cause of an animal’s misfortune can be directly traced back to human causes, I think we have a responsibility to act. For example, the slow painful death of a Komodo dragon’s prey may seem terribly inhumane, but is it our place to intervene here? This is how these species have evolved, and who are we to say what is right or wrong? If we were only to show the peaceful, symbiotic relationships in nature we would be deceiving our audience of the full scope of what exists in our world. On the other hand, when watching baby sea turtles scurry towards city streetlights, and their ultimate death, confused and disorientated believing these lights to be the moon off the ocean, I would be the first one with a bucket saving their dumb little asses and dumping them into the ocean where they belong. I’ve personally spent 3 summers working 12+ hour long shifts at a wildlife rehabilitation center where we are directly intervening in ‘nature’. Does this make me a hypocrite? I think not, since these animals are put in danger because of human made not natural causes. If we’re doing the damage, we should be part of the solution.

When I show images I have taken at zoos I never try to pretend that they were taken in the wild, yet people may initially assume this themselves and feel lied to when they discover the animals were from a zoo...
There are many other ethical dilemmas surrounding nature documentaries, which I must grapple with and solidify my own opinions on if I am to successfully and authentically achieve the gift of spark to inspire my audience. There’s no way I can address all of these moral questions here, but this article by Chris Palmer is an interesting read if anyone else is thinking of pursing this field (and the topics addressed here can probably all also be applied to a variety of other nature interpretation.

Neature Walks: Ethnobotany
I’ve chosen to discuss the ethnobotany walk that was presented by Group 2 in the Arboretum. I found this walk was particularly well-done and was presented in an effective manner. I also thought that the topic was a great choice given the course material and reflected a lot on how nature can be useful for humans. The three gifts that I noticed within the walk were the gifts of beauty, story, and targeted programs.

Gift of beauty
I thought that including the idea of shinrin-yoku in this program was a great idea, and this was my favourite part of the walk! I have participated in many forms of nature bathing, but I’ve never had it explained through a cultural sense, mainly just as a spiritual experience, which was a great switch-up for me! I think the mini nature bath that Katharine lead was a great way to bring everything we learned together. I think this activity highlighted the true beauty of nature, especially in terms of the whole-bodied experience of it.
Gift of story
The gift of story was exceptionally emphasized in Justine’s presentation about maple trees and syrup. She reflected on her personal experience making maple syrup with her family, suggesting that this is a simple method through which we can all participate in and appreciate nature. She also walked us through the process of tapping a tree and turning the sap into syrup, and she explained this in a way that was easy to understand. It was as if her entire presentation as all one big story, from her recounting her experience and identifying the process that makes maple syrup, everything was well-connected and relevant to her topic.

Gift of targeted programs
The presentation on wild carrot reflected the gift of targeted programs well. This presentation allowed the audience to participate in choosing between two plants that appear very similar, one being poisonous (water hemlock) and one being edible (wild carrot). This allowed the audience to put their skills to the test and then learn about some identification tips and more information about wild carrot. This presentation served as a great introduction to identifying wild plants and using them for sustenance.
Since this walk was well-executed, there are very few suggestions I can offer for improvement. I think the gift of targeted programs could have been a bit better developed by using a mounted specimen from the herbarium to show the plants rather than a picture on a laptop. I only suggest this because it can be difficult to interpret size or scale from an image, and an actual specimen would have solved this issue. This would make it easier to distinguish between wild carrot and water hemlock, since water hemlock is taller and has a larger inflorescence than wild carrot. Also, presenting an actual specimen rather than an image would have been more immersive for the activity. Perhaps even introducing other common plants and how to identify them would have been appropriate here as well.
Overall, this walk was well-planned and presented some interesting information about ethnobotany. This walk was probably my favourite and the most memorable out of all of the walks on Saturday, so I’m glad that I had the opportunity to participate!

I was actually initially hesitant to include the sugar maple tree in our presentation, since I figured most of the class would have probably learnt about sugar maples back in elementary school...would it be too basic for university students? What ended up selling me on the idea was actually that Justine had a personal connection to the topic as she taps sugar maples and makes maple syrup with her dad. I feel like we always learn about this topic as if it’s something that can only be done in fancy sugar bush attractions, so talking about it from the perspective of an activity to do with your family added an interesting new element to the topic for me. I’m glad to here you enjoyed this too!
I actually totally agree with your critique about how it would of been better to use actual specimen’s rather than the pictures off our laptop. Our initial plan was actually to press and mount the flowers ourselves to pass around for everyone to see, but we misjudged how quickly the flowers would turn to seed pods so when we went to pick the flowers there weren’t any left. Oh the joys of having 4 distinct seasons! I totally didn’t think to check the UofG herbarium though. To be honest, I’m not really sure who I would talk to for that?
Blog prompt 9: reflecting on our guided walks
When you think of the perfect weather for nature interpretation, Saturday was probably not what comes to mind. When I woke up to overcast skies, negative temperatures on the thermometer, and the sound of wind whistling down the side of the house I’ll be honest I did momentarily contemplate rolling over and cocooning back up in my thick warm blankets. A thought I revisited wishfully when I then wiped out on a patch of black ice on my way to the bus stop and proceeded to wait over half an hour for a bus due to there being a multi-car pile up on the intersection preventing any buses from getting through. But once the day finally began it all became worth it. Walk after walk I was inspired by everyone’s enthusiasm for their respective topics and perseverance in the face of less than ideal conditions (hey, at least it didn’t rain!).
One of the walks that was the most memorable for me was on the aboriginal people of Guelph and their customs surrounding the natural world.
I’ve always struggled with my own personal relationship with the aboriginal story of Canada. A few weeks ago, after living here in Canada for over 10 years, I finally got to write my citizenship exam. In the textbook material provided to study for this exam the aboriginal people of Canada were mentioned only once, in a short paragraph that stated that early Europeans formed important ‘trade relationships’ with the aboriginal peoples, and these relationships formed the ‘backbone upon which Canada was built’. I know right – what bullsh*t! I took enough social science and history classes throughout elementary and high school to know that aboriginal people have got the short end of the stick at pretty much every turn and more often that not it was Englishmen that were to blame. In this storyline I’m pretty sure I’m the bad guy. But on the other hand, personally I have always been fascinated with aboriginal stories, customs, and traditions. Specifically, I love their connectedness with and respect for all aspects of the natural world. So how do I appreciate and admire their culture, while also acknowledging my own privileges on this topic.

What really made this walk stand out for me, was the way they were able to use the gifts of personalizing the past and storytelling. Too often I think we talk about aboriginal people only in terms of their interactions with early Europeans, as if they somehow ceased to exist after this. This kind of erasure is problematic on several levels. I won’t get into all of that here, but one point I do want to make is that looking at aboriginal peoples as a thing only of the past makes it easy to dehumanize and stereotype them as two-dimensional characters, rather than real people with a diverse set of life experiences. It also means that it is harder for audience members to connect with the topic as it happened over a hundred years ago. The guides of this walk instead brought the stories and messages from history, and placed them in a modern context, acknowledging the lives of aboriginal identifying people navigating Guelph as it exists today. For example, the walk lead us to several of the lecture buildings on campus where our guides contrasted the ways stories and information was passed from one generation to the next or between peers in historical aboriginal cultures through a circular council, to the modern education set up based primarily on European culture with students sitting in rigid rows listening to a singular teacher. This comparison was then extrapolated to show how many aspects of city life are built based on European western customs and do not accommodate or incorporate aboriginal culture.

This modern context also helped me make connections between the topic and my own personal life through the gift of revelation. During the walk we got the opportunity to participate in a smudging ceremony. I come from very Celtic family, and while we’re not necessarily very religious we still participate in many of the traditions and holidays. For those of you who don’t know, the Celts (pronounced ‘Kelts’ – I honestly have no clue where the American pronunciation came from) were basically indigenous peoples of the UK thousands of years ago. And much like Europeans came to Canada and stole the land from the aboriginal, an eerily similar story played out between the Romans and Celts. Furthermore, there are actually equivalents to smudging ceremonies in celtic culture, where we use various plants to ‘clean’ dark energies from a home or person during certain times of the year.
Appologies for the terrible cell phone photo, but I wanted to share this ‘brigit’s cross’ I made for my room in first year. In celtic culture there are lots of marks like this that are generally built from plants and are supposed to hold/ control certain energies within the room. Fire and incense are also important parts of the culture, simular to the smudging ceremony.
We also talked about the significance of the moon and the connection between its cycles and that of the female body in aboriginal culture during the walk, and almost the exact same connection is drawn in celtic culture! Before the walk on Saturday I’d never really thought about these similarities before, and I think it helped me understand why I’m drawn to aboriginal stories and traditions so much, since they actually mirror my own quite closely!
The moon and specifically the cycles of the moon is an important aspect of both aboriginal and celtic cultures, with both cultures drawing connections between the moon and the human body.
Anyone else here from a culture that draws parallels with the aboriginal customs we talked about during this walk? I’m super fascinated now to know if these are common threads that link all indigenous cultures together? After all, it’s not like the celts and north American aboriginals of the past would have ever met each other!
P.S. This blog post totally went off on a tangent, but I’m going to leave it as is because I’m actually curious to hear other people’s responses.
I have absolutely no clue what the context for this was, but one of my friends just showed me and it’s a) hilarious b) possibly problematic and c) actually conveys a suprising amount of actual facts when you pick through the bullsh*t lol. So nature interpreters....what does everyone think?
A Funky Ducky
Last week as I was thinking of cool nature topics two write about I was initially tied between two ideas. I ended up going with the frogs and toads because they have species significance to be being one of the first wildlife populations growing up I really thought critically about over a multi year period of time, running my own little ‘studies’ on them to answer my questions. But since this week is also a free write, I figured why not write about my other cool nature fact from last week?!
The story begins one steamy summer afternoon in August. I had the day off work (a fact I was very glad for – I love my work, but mucking out stinky raccoon enclosures in 30+ degree weather is a bit extreme) so my mum and I decided to spend the afternoon relaxing and taking photos at Lake Wilcox, which is a short drive from my parents place. We both had an art fair at the lake coming up in a few days, so figured it would be a good idea to get an idea of where the parking lot, etc. would be. Besides, who really needs an excuse to go to a lake when it’s baking hot weather.
If anyone here knows Lake Wilcox, they’ll know it’s very beautiful and scenic, but not necessarily very ‘wild’. On any given day the place is generally moderately busy with families out for a stroll, small kids splashing on the beach, and people renting out canoes/ taking lessons.
In the spring Caspian Terns use the lake to catch fish on their migration northwards which is pretty wild to watch.
Having said that they also use the storm water management pond behind my backyard which didn’t even have any fish in until one of the neighbors dumped their pet goldfish in it, so I think we might just have some slightly special terns.
And for a couple years before the new boardwalk was built there was a family of muskrats living in the cattail reeds, but other than that wildlife around Lake Wilcox is pretty restricted to ducks.
And gosh are there a lot of ducks!
So, there I was, chilling in the shade of a tree on some rocks with my feet in the water (which only feels a few degrees cooler than the ambient air temperature to be honest, but gosh darn it I’m at a lake so I’m gonna put my feet in!) watching the ducks. This one white duck kept catching my attention, specifically I couldn’t figure out what was up with its head – it looked just like it was wearing a hat!
It turns out these guys are called ‘Crested White Drakes’ and are actually mallards with a really odd skull mutation! I’m sure most of you have had to take MBG or some other genetics course by now, so you probably that humans (and ducks) have two copies (called ‘alleles’) of each gene. In this case there basically is an allele to have a skull, and an allele to … well not. Obviously if your homozygous for the ‘no skull’ allele (you have 2 copies of that allele) you’re probably going to die because strangely enough skulls are important (who would have guessed?). So not many of ‘no skull’ individuals are reproducing, making the allele pretty rare in the population. This you probably all already knew – most mallards you see out there have skulls. But there is still a third possibility; an individual could have one allele for ‘no skull’, and one allele to have a skull (science word for this is heterozygous for those of you who remember MBG). These individuals end up having skulls, but really oddly deformed ones, where often some of their brain is actually OUTSIDE of the skull!
And that’s what this funky ducky is! That ‘hat’ on his head? Yeah that’s his BRAIN just chilling under his skin with absolutely no skull protecting it. How weirdly awesome is that??!!

Where about is Lake Wilcox? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it but it looks like a really nice place to visit from your awesome photos! When it’s a really hot day, I also really enjoy going for a swim outside. Swimming has to be my favourite water activity even though I’m not a pro – my sister and I have been raised on swimming from our father who can swim like a fish.
You’re so lucky to have Caspian terns near your house even if there’s no logical reason for them being there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Caspian tern in the wild before. There’s no storm water management pond near my house so I don’t think Caspian terns would visit, but I do get lots of ducks swimming in my pool.

I really loved all of your pictures of ducks. Ducks are so under rated and are awesome creatures. I love seeing them waddle around and quacking – they seem so happy all of the time going about their duck ways. I’ve seen crested white drakes before but I did not know that the fluffy feathers on their heads are covering their brains! Just wondering (because I have not taken MBG and just other biology courses in university), crested white drakes can be any duck species if they have this skull mutation? I honestly thought that these ducks were a different species from mallards. That’s pretty wild! I wonder if these ducks have a shorter life span than those with their brains inside of skulls.
Lake wilcox is in Richmond Hill (near my parents place). I actually can’t swim (I know right - I grew up on an island but I can’t swim...don’t question it lol) but I love to be around lakes and ponds because of all the life they bring.
We never used to have terns but maybe 5-6 years ago I saw one circling over our storm water management pond. Initially I thought it was a gull and didn’t really question it, but then it started diving over and over again catching fish! I had already heard of Arctic Terns (super crazy cool birds - they actually have the longest migration of any birds in the entire world travelling from the high arctic all the way down to Antarctica and back!) so I immediately got super excited. They only stick around for maybe 2 weeks in the spring and another 2 weeks in the fall through, so it took me a couple years to get good enough photos to be able to ID the type of tern. Turns out most of them seem to be Caspian Terns not Arctic Terns but they’re super cool either way. The most I’ve ever seen is 10 all at once fishing and they can actually get pretty noisy all yelling at eachother - sounds like our neighbourhood has been decended upon by pterodactyls!
As for the crested drakes, I think the crest has actually been bred for by humans as a ‘fancy’ show breed? (Who would of thought duck breeding was a thing but hey, each to their own lol!) Around here at least it seems to pop up most frequently in the wild however in mallards...and specifically leucistic (white) ones. This might just be because that’s what people bred and then the wild population decends from captive ones, or another possibility I’ve often wondered about is whether the genes for leucistic colouration and the skull mutation are linked (I know albinoism for example often comes with higher rates of other mutations, and in some breeds of cats leucistic white colouration is linked to deafness)? As for it being in mallards, I see no reason why the mutation wouldn’t exist in any other duck species - it’s probably just that mallards are the most commonly seen. But I definitely don’t know the details of how it all works.
PROMPT 8. BIOMIMICRY:
This week I decided to write about a topic that really intrigues and interests me. Biomimicry is an approach we take as humans to seek sustainable resolution by using natures patterns and strategies. The goal of biomimicry is to create new products, policies, processes that are new ways of living. These new ways of life will in end be well adapted to our life on earth and be sustainable through the course of a life time. The first time i heard about this topic I was increasingly interested. I took a sustainability course last year and we had a guest speaker who talked about biomimicry and how it is an innovation inspired by nature. It is truly remarkable that nature can teach us so many things that could positively impact our world and lives. When we think about nature we don’t necessarily associate it with the learning outcomes and how to apply nature to our everyday lives, biomimicry is a way to put those thoughts and ideas that nature has given to us and put them into use. Biomimicry is applied to many aspects in our world, one being design. A major thing that influences design and draws my attention in is spider webs. Spider webs, ounce for ounce, are 5x as strong as steel. Biomimicry is such a cool concept that can be applied anywhere to resolve issues such as; materials and architectural design. It can also help us structure political movements, relationships and communities. Learning different aspects about nature can have significant influence on the way we live our lives. A big factor that contributes the way communities run is looking at the way ants live. Ants support one another and work together to get tasks completed. The collection of individual ants actions come together to create a super action that can take on many things that they could not do individually. Ants can really teach us a thing or two about team work and leadership, and they have.
I would love to head about what other natural aspects you guys think influence our world today and in what ways they do. I just discussed the positive impacts nature has on mankind, i’m interested to know if it has any negative impacts.

This was a really cool read and I absolutely loved watching the video as well! I don’t think I’ve ever directly heard of biomimicry before, although I’m familiar with some examples of the concept. For example have you seen the videos of the new robots that are being built modelled after specific animals to allow for greater agility and maneuverability over uneven surfaces?

This post also reminded me of a conversation I had in my Apiculture class last year. Not sure how much you know about honey bees, but when a nest site becomes to crowded, a swarm of bees along with a queen will leave the nest to find a new home. The process by which they select their new nest site though is actually really amazing, because it is basically a really well functioning form of democracy! Scout bees search out new sites and then advertise their findings to the group through a dance. The length of time they spend dancing depends on how good they believe their site to be, but unlike humans, every bee eventually stops dancing regardless of how good they believe the site to be. They then happily go and check out the sites described by the other scout bees and report their findings at these sites as well. Over time, more bees will end up dancing for the sites they all agree to be the best, and once a threshold number of bees are dancing (think ‘voting’) for one site, the colony collectively agrees and heads off to their new home! After learning about this amazing behaviour, I couldn’t help thinking just how much humans have to learn from nature, and how much our society might be improved if we mimicked our own world after the natural one - just like you have described here!

Chubby Cheeks are Good for Singing?
Hey everyone!
It seems you all have been enjoying the photography on here so far (thanks guys – it means a lot!), and one of my favourite things about taking photos is that I notice small details in what I’m photographing that I might otherwise never of noticed. I start wondering why things look the way they do, and once I have a question in my brain, I basically can’t stop thinking about it until I find the answer. Cue 2am google searches into arbitrarily abstract nature info – grin.
One of these 2am searches happened after I took this photo of a leopard frog calling.
My parents place backs onto a small storm water management pond, so growing up I became quite familiar with both the American Toads and Leopard Frogs that called the pond home. I even did a little ID study on the Leopard Frogs when I was about 12…turns out you can identify individual frogs of this species by the pattern of spots on their back!
My birthday is in the first week of May, which also happened to be the same week that the American Toads mate each year. For a few chaotic evenings the water is absolutely teaming with American Toads doing…well you know.
I'm walking home from school and I hear toads calling. Without a second thought, I pull my camera excitedly out of my backpack, and plunge into the long grass following the sound. It rained earlier that day, so by the time I reach the pond edge I'm absolutely soaked. I want to find one of the males who is still calling. He calls and I spot him hiding under a bush. Without a thought I ditch my backpack in the mud and lie down flat on my stomach, so I look as small as possible to him. Typically, I have totally the wrong lens on, so I must carefully slide my way closer and closer, right up to the waters edge. He watches me for a while, as if trying to decide whether to continue calling or swim away. I hold my breath, camera poised. Finally he turns and calls again. My finger touches the shutter... Click.
Straight away I noticed the difference – why did the two species have such different vocal sac structures?
It turns out the American toads have a ‘median sub-gular vocal sac, while Leopard Frogs have ‘paired lateral vocal sacs’. The median sub-gular structure is found in the majority of species alive today, so scientists believe it is likely the ‘ancestral’ design in the evolutionary tree. So, the question then becomes, why have some frogs such as the Leopard frog developed chubby cheeks instead?
I searched and searched for hours, but only got one answer; no one is actually sure! One current hypothesis is that this allows the frogs to call at unique frequencies helping individuals to identify potential mates over the chorus. Alternatively, the different structures may be due to environmental or physiological constraints (a certain size frog for example can only move a certain amount of air through it’s lungs at any one time, so different vocal sac structures may allow each frog to achieve enough volume to be heard).
It’s always cool learning new things, but sometimes it’s cooler yet to find something we actually still don’t quite understand. Who knows, maybe someone in this class will one day be the one to figure this mystery out!

“The Resilient Brain...”
In the summer of 2013 I was 15 years old and home alone when the doorbell rang. I answered the door to the cutest old lady I had ever seen. She was really nice so I decided to listen to her. Now I realize I was approached by a missionary for the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I took a pamphlet from the woman, and proceeded to skim the article tittles. One stood out, “The Resilient Brain of the Arctic Ground Squirrel”. Although the purpose of the woman’s visit was considerably unsuccessful, I still remember what I learnt about that cool animal. So I would like to tell you about the article I have remembered for over five years.
The artic ground squirrel is a small mammal we have here in Canada. For living in the arctic it has to survive very harsh winters. To combat these tough winters the squirrels have to hibernate. To hibernate they burrow into the soil that reaches up to -23.4 degrees Celsius, some ground squirrels body temperatures have even hit negative degrees (Celsius) during these hibernation periods. If humans even drop a few degrees below our average temperature we go into hypothermia and most likely die. The arctic ground squirrel does not. During this cold, brain activity is at an all-time low.
Every few weeks the squirrel needs to warm its body up. To do so the squirrel will shiver (kinetic energy making warmth) to increase its temperature back to it’s a normal temperature. It will stay at the temperature for 12-15 hours.
When it’s time for the arctic ground squirrel to emerge from its hibernation it reaches full brain function in two hours. There is even some debate that it could be preforming at a higher function than pre hibernation.
This brain survived under dangerously harsh conditions, regulates itself, and bounces back rapidly and better than ever. As humans we cannot even compare to this mammal.
If there’s one take away from this story I can give it’s to listen to more people with an open mind. If I didn’t engage in conversation that day I still wouldn’t of known of the impressive arctic ground squirrel that still sits in my memory 5 years later. And for the squirrel it’s a reminder of how many seemly tiny vulnerable creatures there are in the world that harbor much strength and tenacity that we didn’t existed inside of them. For me learning came right to my door and left me with a pamphlet with references, but hopefully more people can hear about these cool little creatures and go out and start learning on their own. This way we can make our own brains a little more resilient.

How animals, especially as you say seemingly small vulnerable ones, manage to survive the incredibly harsh artic conditions is something that has always facinated me. From frogs such as our own native Wood Frog that can actually freeze solid during the winter!! (Ok not quite solid, but about 70%! They have a special ‘antifreeze’ within their blood to prevent cell damage to major organs...how crazy is that?!), to turtles breathing underwater through their cloacal holes (AKA butt holes) when the surface freezes solid with ice, to now this arctic ground squirrel! Nature is amazing!
Trees, please!
Forests cover about 30% of our planet, and provide our planet with so many important things: our air that we breathe, a place to rest, and a home to our flora and fauna. There is so much diversity in forests, and we often forget how interesting the complexity of trees can be. Trees, although quiet and solitary, are buzzing with life and energy, and perform amazing feats for survival! The inability to move does not stop trees from getting crafty in order to survive and reproduce, and there is always so much to learn from them. From the massive redwoods and baobabs, to the slender but beautiful birch, there is much to love about trees, and the amazing things they do for us.
Without further ado, here are 5 AMAZING things about trees you probably didn’t know about:
1. Trees communicate with eachother.

In The Hidden Life of Trees, German forester Peter Wohlleben describes a new and controversial concept that is growing substantially in the scientific community: that trees are constantly communicating with eachother. He looks at the interactions between tree species, and how they individually fight for survival in a forest stand. By identifying these interactions, he has created the idea that trees simultaneously work together with their own species, as well as cooperating with trees of other species! He relates this interaction to that of an insect colony: by emitting chemical signals to other trees through their roots and underground fungal networks, trees can communicate danger, can facilitate growth and can protect eachother in times of drought and disease. Check out this article by the Smithsonian, which looks at this amazing interaction and Wohlleben’s novel!
2. Trees can clone themselves.

Trembling aspen, the iconic tree that resembles “jazz hands” as the wind blows through its leaves, is actually a professional of colonizing land! The trembling aspen forms ‘root suckers’: root extensions off of the main root system of the adult tree, which shoot up from the earth to grow into new aspen trees. This way, they can create large populations in a new environment quickly and efficiently, as a form of asexual reproduction. Each separate shoot will have an identical genome to the plant that it grew from. So, when you see a large trembling aspen, look out for neighbouring aspens, who may actually be clones, a product of the adult! Aspens are not the only trees that can do this, as beech, birch and dogwood can also propagate themselves in this way.
3. Growth rings are able to take us back to the past.

As kids, we all learned that to find out the age of a tree, we take a cross-section of its trunk, and count the rings. Then, I have no doubt, we all spend a considerable time trying to count the hundreds and hundreds of tiny rings on a stump, to no avail. Well, by looking at the growth rings of an old tree, we can not only tell how old the tree is, but also its history, and the history of the environment it lived in! By looking at the size of the growth rings, you can determine whether or not a tree had a ‘good year’ - one with plenty of rain, nutrients and sunlight or a ‘bad year’ - one likely with drought. A big ring indicates a good year (lots of growth), and a small ring indicates a bad year (little growth!). Not only that, but recent scientific research is looking at the chemical compounds within each ring to see what the environment was like during a particular year. For example, the Tipuana tree in Brazil is being used as a marker of atmospheric pollution, as its roots absorb heavy metals that are present in the atmosphere, transporting these compounds to the wood of its growth rings. By looking at growth rings of the past 50 years, you can rewrite the story of the surrounding pollution in those years!
4. Some trees are not that tall, and not trees at all.

Club mosses sure look like tiny trees, don’t they? Well, it’s because in an essence, they are. These plants have a similar function to vines; the plant creeps along the ground, shooting up small, tree-like leaves up towards the sky to reach sunlight. By doing this, the plant creates a mat, or mini-forest, along the forest floor. Even though they are not considered trees, early lycophytes (which were the descendants of clubmoss) formed the oldest group of forest-forming trees in the Carboniferous era. So, although club moss are not trees themselves, they evolved from early trees and have still kept similar function to forests, just on the forest floor!
5. Although trees may look small, they can be old, and strong.

In a subalpine ecosystem, life grows differently. Once you reach altitudes where snow, rain and cold is prevalent, life is not able to grow the same as if you were lower in altitude. Trees in these biomes are adapted to these extreme weather conditions, and have evolved some amazing survival techniques! Krummholz trees, also known as dwarf trees, are trees that live above the treeline, which is the highest point at which trees can grow. These trees are smaller than most trees, and misshapen, but are the same species as the ones growing lower than the treeline. This shows how far a tree will go to survive, and will even risk death in adverse conditions to grow! Since northern, subalpine forest communities are often never disturbed, we can still see old-growth forests today. However, these forests are threatened by climate change, as the trees thrive in cold conditions, and are susceptible to change.
5 AMAZING things about trees just barely touches on all the incredible adaptations and functions trees have. The most amazing things in nature may not be the most spectacular views or the weirdest animals. They can be the things we see in our day-to-day lives, like our forests!

I’m still a little confused about the club moss one. It’s really cool how they look like mini trees just on the forest floor, and it totally makes sense that they’re basically filling the same function within the ecosystem just at a different scale. But what did you mean by “although club moss are not trees themselves, they evolved from early trees”. I thought club moss (Lycopodiaceae) was one of the most basal vascular plants on the evolutionary tree (along with ferns right? because they both reproduce with spores having evolved prior to angiosperms?) so how could they evolve from early trees? Did you mean to say early trees evolved from club mosses? Or am I missing something?
Musical Nature
In all honesty, when I read this week’s blog prompt, I was so excited! Music has always been near and dear to my heart. I learned to play the alto saxophone when I was 11, the piano when I was 13, and the ukulele when I was 17. While I’ve drifted away from playing music since university, I have grown a greater appreciation for it - you can always find me at a local show or listening to tunes wherever I am. Actually, the last show I went to was last Thursday, and it was so good! I joined some friends at the eBar and saw Softside, a local band that makes tender music, and Deltawill, a band from Toronto that plays existential pop (definitely check these bands out!). Anyways, as you can all tell, I am really passionate about music!

When asked “Where is music in nature?”, I first thought “Where isn’t there?”. Whether it’s the wind rustling through the trees, birds singing their dawn chorus, or squirrels running through leaves. I’m not sure there is ever a time when nature is truly silent; there’s always some sort of white noise. One of my favourite sounds in nature is the song of a Bobolink. Their song is so cheery and bubbly, and it immediately reminds me of my parent’s home where we have a nesting pair in our hayfield. It also brings the memory of my father first showing me a male Bobolink perched on our fence post singing his little heart out, and my father telling me how there used to be so much more of them when he was younger and that they’re listed as a species-at-risk.
I find that so many musicians try to emulate the sounds and feelings of nature in their work, which I find really interesting. One of my favourite songs that has an element of nature is The Wolves by Ben Howard. In this song, the artist emulates the sounds of wolves howling, reminding me of the many summer nights I’ve spent in Algonquin Provincial Park listening to the wolves howling. Another artist that encompasses the spiritual aspects of nature is A Tribe Called Red. Composed of Indigenous musicians, A Tribe Called Red combines traditional First Nations drumming and chanting with electronic music. While I’m not much of a fan of electronic music, I find A Tribe Called Red has met halfway with its listeners to provide a more modern rendition of traditional Indigenous music.

Some other music that I just couldn’t leave out of this post are At The Bird’s Foot by City and Colour and the People Gonna Rise Like The Water chant by 350.org. At The Bird’s Foot really resonates with me as an environmental activist. This song discusses the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 that released almost 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. As a member of Fossil Free Guelph (FFG), I am constantly drawn back to this event and how our current methods of resource extraction are so dirty and not environmentally sustainable in the slightest. People Gonna Rise Like The Water was the main chant of FFG’s march to MP Lloyd Longfield’s office on March 23, 2018 as part of a national day of action to defend the water and show our opposition to Kinder Morgan’s Trans-Mountain Pipeline expansion. The Trans-Mountain expansion plans to go through unceded Tsleil-Waututh territory, on which the government does not have informed prior consent to build. The lyrics are: People gonna rise like the water, Gotta calm this crisis down/Hear the voice of your great-granddaughter, Saying ‘Keep it in the ground’. I think these lyrics send such a powerful message, and they’re simple enough that everyone could easily chant them. Anyways, I thought I would include these two songs in this post for anyone else that is really into environmental activism.

I love Bobolinks! I actually have my glider pilot licence and there always used to be bobolinks in the fields around the runways, so their song reminds me of long summer days of flying.
I also find it interesting that we both picked Ben Howard songs. I wonder what it is about the tone of this artist that makes us think of nature? He does seem to mimic natural sounds lots as you mentioned, but I also wonder if the instruments used or even just the sound of his voice helps. For example he uses a guitar in a lot of his songs, which might help connect to memories of camp fires etc.
I’m going to have so many new songs to listen to by the end of the week!
