Song of Aud the Deep-Minded. I grew up in Lerwick where the annual Up-Helly-Aa Viking festival is celebrated with a male-only Viking tradition. Iâve long been curious about the role of women in Viking society and was intrigued to learn in 2015 of female Iceland settler, Aud the Deep-Minded. My research into Audâs life took me to Norway and Iceland where I learned that this Norwegian noblewoman was born in a crusading age with aspirations to secure her familyâs future by cunning and conquest. Aud was made an orphan, widow and grieving mother in her dramatic lifetime, but she overcame vulnerability using courage and strong leadership skills, securing her place in history as an independent and influential land-claimant. Thanks Mam. Gratitude for countless acts of simple, loving care. Mam is, like many women, a multifaceted character but she prizes her role as mother above everything else. As children we never doubted how loved we were because she was always there. We ate breakfast together, chatted on the school run and shared the dayâs news over tea. She stood me on a chair to watch her cook when I was a toddler and she read to me daily. Our childhood was a âmake do and mendâ one in which Mam created anything we needed from materials found lying around the house. She carved me a Cinderellaâs carriage neepie lantern for Halloween one year and produced multiple book covers from wallpaper scraps. Her phone calls during university were as regular as clockwork, and now in adult life too she never skips a beat. Hands Across the Hills. A song about Shetland Bus operations during World War Two. In 1943 a whaling vessel called the Brattholm and its twelve man crew sailed 900 miles from Scalloway in Shetland to Troms in Norway with explosives aboard to blow up German supplies and organise a resistance network. On landing, the sailors made contact with a reputedly trustworthy local merchant who wasnât the man they thought he was and betrayed them to the Germans. A warship swooped, the Brattholmâs crew blew her up in an act of self defence, and all aboard ended up in the surrounding icy water. They swam ashore but only one man, 25-year-old Jan Baalsrud, evaded capture. With a bullet-wounded foot he set out on an 80-mile journey across icy mountains and water to reach freedom at the neutral Swedish border. He was helped by people in occupied Norway who put their lives at risk by giving Baalsrud shelter, food, clothing and transport. He was delivered into Sweden on a Lapp reindeer sled, having survived snow-blindness, gangrene, frostbite, being buried alive for five days in an avalanche, and losing most of his toes. After ten weeks of recuperation he recovered and a few months later flew back to England to report for duty. His achievement became legendary and King Olaf V of Norway sent an inscribed wreath of flowers to his funeral. His ashes were buried in the same grave as one of the men who helped him in Norway, and an 80-mile trek along his escape route takes place each July over nine days, a tribute to his helper. Kirstie Caddelâs Prayer. The story of a harrowing nineteenth century Shetland life. Widowed soon after moving to Lerwick from Northmavine in 1839 for work, Kirstieâs lifelong fight to secure the wellbeing of her children was ultimately a losing battle. It was often at Martinmas that Kirstieâs family left or were evicted from their lodgings. Ironically, each 11th November, St Martin of Tours is celebrated in Europe as a friend of children and patron of the poor because he cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm. With this background in mind, I wanted to tell Kirstieâs story in the form of a prayer for her children, spoken from beyond the grave.
