水月観音菩薩半跏像 （神奈川県鎌倉市・東慶寺）

本日は中秋の名月。

見上げた夜空に煌々と輝く月が綺麗。

というわけで、月にちなんで水月観音菩薩（すいげつかんのんぼさつ）。

心の浄化と水難から守ってくれる仏です。 

大乗仏教では、水面に映る月（水月）を観想する修行法があり、「水月観」という名で呼ばれています。

岩にもたれて、右手で実のついた蓮の花を持ち、水面に映る月影を静かに眺めている水月観音菩薩 。

とってもクール。

密教では水吉祥観世音菩薩という名で呼ばれ、方膝を立てている像で表現されることが多く、この姿は「水定」という禅定の境地（今まさに、悟りを開かんとする状態）のひとつとされています。 

日本では鎌倉市周辺の寺でのみ見られる珍しい仏様が水月観音菩薩です。
