Rhodeytony but not as in Iron Husbands.

Rhodeytony as in slow-burn so slow it stretches over decades and into a new millenia. Rhodeytony as in they graduated MIT and got toxic, they drifted apart, they yearned and suppressed, they fought the few times they did see each other. Tony gets caught up in being the world’s plaything and Rhodey gets caught up being the perfect cog in a machine that doesn’t care about him. They mess around in a Vegas hotel room here and there and that only increases tensions and emotions. Tony’s an emotional and impulsive mess. Rhodey is terrified of being found out as a queer. They both say things they don’t mean. They go no contact. One day, TONY reaches out and asks Rhodey to quit active service and come be his liaison and it’s all messy homoerotic friendship with high-stakes and cameras on them at all times. And yes, they’re both morally ambiguous. Men in the 90s and early 2000s and in their specific workforces too.
