open starter @solarisstarters when & where: belle notte - july, early evening.
one of the perks of opening her own restaurant - besides setting her own hours and being her own boss - was almost definitely free access to the bar.
not that clara was by any means a huge drinker, besides a glass of wine or two with dinner or while she was out with friends, but sometimes, after a harrowing week or two or a particularly difficult shift she needed a little down time perched at the counter to take advantage of her status as the boss.
tonight was one such night - and luckily for her she seemed to have company for a change, if the person sliding into the barstool next to her was any indication, so at least she could feel like less of a lush.
“first ones on me - what’ll it be?”
chlobell·:
closed starter for @clarabelldujour·
in the year since chloe had been home, there had been little to no headway in mending what bridges extended between her and clara. it hadn’t always been like this - or at least, chloe didn’t think it had always been like this. she knew there was issues between their father and clara, but her mother treated clara like her own, and the two of them had always wanted such different things - different lives, different goals, different personalities - that there wasn’t a competition between them, not really.
but there were secrets, secrets that burdened them both. secrets they could not and had not ever found a way to talk about, and that shared guilt - it had deepened a crack between them that had shown up somewhere in childhood that they’d never even gotten a chance to truly repair.
but chloe was in solaris bay - for the foreseeable future, at least - and so were their parents, and her niece. if it wasn’t for clarissa, perhaps chloe could have accepted the space between them and kept her distance - but her niece was too important, a part of her she wouldn’t let go of, and so at least once a week, chloe found herself at clara’s doorstep with gifts and a smile she hoped looked more genuine than it felt.
“i brought presents,” was her usual greeting, and she held up a bag from black and write - at least it was books, this time, something clara couldn’t find a fault with. “and even more importantly, champagne for mimosa’s - i know you’re cooking, but you can’t fault me for wanting to contribute somehow.”
🍳
clara didn’t consider herself to be a high strung kind of person, in fact as long as she had her husband, her daughter and her passion she was generally content to go about life in as calm a way as possible - that’s not to say she didn’t have stressors - several things had a way of weighiing on her mind, it was just in general she considered herself to be more laidback than anything else.
chloe though - chloe had a way of bringing out her less than stellar qualities.
still, if only for her daughters sake she was trying to quell them, some days she was more successful than others, but if she was anything, it was persistent - eventually, if she and her estranged sister tried hard enough, they’d find some sort of resolution.
“mimosa’s sound fabulous.” she took the offered gift with a shrug, placing it on the front console for clarissa to find when scott brought her home from soccer practice, leading her sister into her kitchen, light and airy enough to hopefully set the same kind of mood “hopefully you’ve also brought your appetite since i’ve been cooking since six this morning.”
she bent down to glance inside the oven, the muffins she had baking on the middle shelf almost ready “you prep the drinks if you like, while i finish this all up.”

the day clara bell came into the world tragically coincided with the day her mother left it. it’s a terrible thing to have to endure, your key defining moment happening when you’re only a few minutes old, worse when it causes the fracture of your relationship with the one remaining parent you have left before it even really gets a chance to form.
clarissa bell had been a beautiful woman, caring, vibrant and warm and as clara grew older she grew to be just like her.
when her father brought home a new wife and soon after brought a new little girl into the world - one that didn’t tear his heart apart just through the grace of being born, one that he doted on without any of the excess baggage - it could have been easy for clara to fall on the wayside, forgotten and unwanted.
but she didn’t.
andrea bell was loving woman with a warm and caring heart, and she was more than willing to do what her husband couldn’t.
the first time she called her mom it felt like a betrayal of a woman she’d never had the joy to meet.
her sister had longed for a life of adventure and success but clara’s dreams were simpler, a husband, children, a family of her own. a family she could love unconditionally and who would love her in return - the opportunity to build a career doing something she was passionate about.
and she succeeded, marrying her high school sweetheart just after graduating from culinary school, a daughter she named for her mother following soon after. the opportunity to continue learning from her stepmother when she took the position of sous chef in the older woman’s restaurant before blessedly, four years ago she was given the opportunity to open her own.
the return of her sister to town, throws a spanner in the works, issues long buried brought to the surface- burying the hatchet isn’t an option but clara’s always been good at ignoring the hurt anyway, so it shouldn’t be hard to ignore more of it now.
