It’s a somber thought when you think about it, and it does upset Magnus to some degree that he’s played a part in Clary’s life that she’ll never know. He’s known her her whole life, just as she’s said, but she doesn’t remember any of it because of him.
❝I suppose you’re right.❞ Suppose? No, she is right. ❝You’re mother has been coming to me for years to– as she clams– to help you. I’ve known you since you were a little girl, I’ve watched you grow up, but you don’t remember anything.❞ There’s a hint of remorse in his voice as he speaks, but he smiles though it. ❝But I do have to say that I’ve quite enjoyed our time together and actually getting to know you.❞
Clary has always been more in tune with her feelings and those around her than most other Shadowhunters. So that remorse does not go unheard. “I don’t have to remember. Just knowing you were there and watching out for me is enough.”
She gives her own smile and reaches out for Magnus’s arm. Her mother had tried to protect her for so long. And honestly? Who knows what would have happened if people had been able to discover her sooner. Clary had been prepared to start her life and career in school not too long ago, but now she couldn’t imagine anywhere else she belongs.
It might not have been the best solution that her mother had come up with, but she knows now how desperate Jocelyn had been.
“Would it be weird-- to say you’re kinda like another parent?” Clary laughs a little, lighthearted and kind. “Maybe. Since Alec is somewhat of a brother even though he hates me.” The redhead rolls her eyes, clearly not believing her own words. Alec may act like he hates everyone, but she knows by now that he’s accepted her at least.
