Lacking feelings, the soul couldn’t react to the touch. Their understandable expository is depressing; to have limited, unsatisfying options. At least boredom isn’t a problem, and the soul has company. Things could’ve been worse. After observing the scene, he will eventually ask Goner Kanna how to do that. Seeking answers to philosophical questions is meaningless while in this state, so the soul will refrain from doing so. 

“I see. I have other lives. It’s kinda like that multiverse theory you’d see on TV.”

The soul stares in Kanna’s direction, pondering and conjuring assumptions. 

 “What happened to you? How did you perish?”

“Mm. Multiverse theory. I suppose it is a bit like that. I always assumed this was some form of purgatory between. ..The greater details are lost on me.” At the inquiry, Goner Kanna returns their attention to Tyree and shrugs bodily. It is a half hearted gesture. “I almost can’t recall the specifics. I have been here a very long time. I believe I am from another world, with rules like yours. We made it to the surface when..” “Something attacked us. It destroyed our entire world. Great, black grasping vines that blotted out the sun.”

“ I do not remember much of who I was, before. I latched onto the other me for insight. But there are very few who exist in the same way that instance did.” Another frown. His lips purse tightly together as his gaze shifts to the empty space between them. Seemed he was either lost in thought or just.. Lagging again. What a wretched creature he was. it was kind of sad to watch.

This is confusing. This is so mind bogglingly confusing. He can’t wrap his head around it. If he possesses a body right now, a headache would definitely be present as he ponders so hard to grasp the words coming out of their mouth. “Fountainhead of DETERMINATION?” What? Are we being controlled by ‘gods’ now? What the hell is going on here.

Despite what Tyree sees, he’s not sure what to make of it. What an odd existence. It’s nowhere near what he’s expecting. Trying to comprehend this is will take forever, so let’s ask the most important, simple questions. 

“I don’t understand. I’m sorry. I find our exchange unfathomable, but since they are listening…”

He shifts his gaze skyward.

“Hey… I know I messed up really badly… But, can you take me back now? In any way possible… I don’t know…”

There is another frown, as the being approaches Tyree. They were quite tall. A lot taller than was first expected from the range between them. It was hard to gauge distance here. He places a hand on the young man’s shoulder. The dead human cannot feel this as well. The gesture however itself should have expressed enough.  “..Maybe they can. That is beyond my power. What I have shown you is the extent of what we can do here.” “We can observe. Or we can choose to fade. Time is meaningless here. You awoke me from my own choice to fade. To sleep.  And in sleep we dream. You can observe your other lives.” He turns back to the darkness. A scene appears of the same monster, but full of life and color. They are attending a bar in New Home. As he works, he stops and his brow furrows in confusion. They look up slowly towards the sky, and specifically towards the two before Goner Kanna shakes his head and the scene disperses.

“It is all we have now. I will return to slumber when you have sated your curiosity for this place. It is up to the anomaly to decide your fate from there.”

They did the exact same thing. It’s no different than the fight between him and Suki. How unfortunate. 

So that’s the purpose behind these generated scenes. However, this is not a video game, right? One cannot [RESET] and choose a different path. Life doesn’t work that way. Trying to fruitlessly figure out how any of this is possible is beyond his comprehension. But matter not, he’s presented with an opportunity to write his wrong, giving him a sense of HOPE, almost acting without thinking. 

The soul’s arm outstretches itself, slowly reaching for their hand before retracting it right away. This seems familiar… Didn’t unsavory characters approach him before, promising him even more power for a hefty exchange? Could they be the devil? Dealing with the devil isn’t wise, regardless how desperate he is to fix his mistake. Chances are, he may cause more trouble than good. Perhaps he shouldn’t be too hasty. 

Tyree may not be bright, but he wouldn’t accept deals for power.

“Probably not. Which is why I’m not going to sacrifice anything. I want to go back only once, and completely as myself. I don’t permanently need such power.”

“You want to go back only once. And you do not permanently need such power.” Goner Kanna repeats Tyree’s words dryly. It wasn’t scolding, so much as incredulous. How could the human know though..? He shakes his head sadly before lifting a hand. A mirror appears before Tyree, revealing the extent of his affliction.  His eyes were as empty as Kanna’s. A ghost..? No. He didn’t even have a SOUL like this. What was he then..?  “There is much to explain. There is so much to explain. We will have time. But for now, while you are still relatively whole... You still have some power to change the fate of your successors.” “Understand that you yourself are no longer “Tyree.” You do not possess the power of the First Human. They are the nascent fountainhead of DETERMINATION that keeps the Multiverse in check.  You can never hope to stand atop that capstone.” “But you are special in another way. You and many others were created by a force beyond our understanding and control. Lingering regrets or desires for this world given form. Purpose.” “..They are watching you now. And they are listening. Our fate is a lesson to them.”

The soul has conjured many questions upon first arrival. Isn’t this the part where he’s going to be judged and sent to either heaven or hell? The soul is no firm believer, but at this point anything’s possible. Given their broken appearance, he wonders if Kanna is god. If so, why is he showing him all this? What’s the point? What’s the point of this scene? It’s better to have no knowledge of the utter eradication at all. And indeed, Tyree has plentiful questions. 

“I don’t understand. I have free will, right? It was my decision, my choice to strike Suki. I wasn’t aware that yokai was like other monsters. If I had known, things would’ve been different. I would’ve done something else.”

The incomplete being continues to stare. Processing Tyree’s words. His tone shifts ever so slightly as he replies. It is almost mournful. 

* Had you known, yes. Had any of us known better. Known what was coming. Perhaps ‘we’ wouldn’t have to exist either.

The scene beside them shifts once more, to Toriel. They are engaged in combat with Frisk. The child is doing their best to weaken her without killing her when... Something goes wrong. She takes more damage than she should and begins to succumb.

* This world is cruel at times. It challenges our expectations. It forces us to make mistakes because of our ignorance or hubris.  * ..If you had the power to change your fate, you would. As they did. The one you speak of. Your ‘better’.

As Toriel dies, Frisk kneels in the dust in profound loss. It is then that a hovering star appears before them. They grasp it, and the world melts away. The child falls again. And this time, they spare Toriel.

* This power is why you were doomed to fail. Because they too made the same mistakes. But unlike you, they could go back and change them. * They felt they were above the consequences.

Another transition.. And this time, Tyree is uncomfortably close to another child. They are similar in appearance to Frisk. But something about them was... Off. A green shirt, all too happy features. Their eyes though betrayed the facade most of all. 

They were hungry voids, inescapable in their wrath and greed. And they were boring into Tyree. Almost as if this being was actually aware of them in this state. Slowly, they offer a hand out, looming before him. In their other hand, Tyree’s SOUL floats above their palm.

* But how much, is too much..? If you yourself had that power. What would you be willing to sacrifice?  * Would you still be “Tyree” at all if you didn’t have to make any compromises?

Coming into existence emotionless and empty; a hollow husk of a soul ascending in the air, elevating. Although conscious and aware, he couldn’t feel any vehement self-hatred, and sadness while visions of past and present plays before him. It’s a blessing. Otherwise, he’ll be chewing himself out again and again non-stop as he hopes for his own destruction, desperate to never feel once more. 

After watching the conflict between humans and monsters and witnessing the monster’s extinction. He would’ve gone completely mad if he could feel right now.  Lucida, Roda, Filch, Aislin, Brutus, and many others would perish, and it’ll be all his fault. Didn’t he strives for diplomacy between the two races? Didn’t he work hard and put his life on the line almost EVERY day interviewing people so his monster encyclopedia can be finished and published and help many of his kind understand and support monsters? What a waste. Two years of effort down the drain because of one, stupid mistake… And multiple misunderstandings.

Locating the booming voice’s source, his attention slowly turns to him, replying in a defeated, sadden tone.

“No… I never wanted something like this to happen.”

“…Why me? Why do I have to play such a vital role? To have great responsibility over monster’s survival? There are better humans than I. I’m a failure.”

There is a pause as Tyree finishes speaking. The monster does not respond. It doesn’t look like he is doing much of anything, really. That is, until he inexplicably does. He, it, whatever they were... The movement was too intermittent to be anything truly alive. The response was far too delayed. The monster’s head turns to face Tyree instantaneously, while what appeared to be a lagging frame of his him still staring at the SOUL persists a few moments more. It then disappears. It was lagging. “...I cannot know why. It is beyond our ken.” “But I know how. You were made to fill... Another’s role.”

Another series of movements, as the figure walks away from the scene that had been depicted. It was becoming easier to follow this broken creature. To make sense of the emptiness that Tyree could now identify as simply missing pieces of its existence. They weren’t a Monster at all. Whatever this was, it was less of a being than even he himself at this point. A fractured portion of something lost. Goner Kanna’s movements are now fluid again as Tyree understands its name. They weren’t truly moving, either. It was all a slow process of acclimating to the abstractions they were showing Tyree slowly. The disembodied human ‘follows’ the Monster to another scene in the distance. --A familiar flower patch, from which a shaft of light pours from the surface world. A child falls, before their eyes and lands. They are assaulted by a large, talking yellow buttercup. As Flowey’s bullets fly, time in the scene seems to slow again to a stop. A Frisk. Perhaps they were familiar to Tyree.

“...You are one of many humans, yes. But you are not a failure. Not truly. You are simply an... Incomplete reflection. Of the first.” “Regardless of your intentions, your Determination.. You were unfortunately doomed to fail from the outset. And it is no fault of yours.”

The figure’s face shifts to stare at Tyree now with lifeless eyes. As if waiting for input. The inevitable questions.

Death was quick and painless for Tyree. But Death was not the end of his story.. Or his consciousness. Disembodied, the human floated above the scene of his own demise. A sort of bird’s eye view unobstructed by obstacles to his field of view. He could see everything, now. [ACT] But he could not feel. To look down, to gaze at himself, was a difficult and abstract thing to do. [ACT] But when he does manage, he will find his body is oddly devoid of pigmentation. He was grey now. [ACT] Past and present events were blending together, in a sickening fashion. He was somehow simultaneously witnessing all of them. [ACT]

All the while, the world followed the perspective of his captured SOUL. [ACT] As time began to stretch out forward and back, It lost its meaning altogether. He was rushing towards some sort of final terminus. And he would witness every moment of it, willing or otherwise. The King of Monsters absorbs seven SOULs and shatters the barrier, freeing Monsterkind and unleashing an unspeakable wave of destruction upon the surface world. Tyree is among those taken away. Strangely, he isn’t aware of himself in this state. Almost as if he were viewing another instance of himself entirely. As the war spiraled to its inevitable center, humanity overcame and utterly destroyed the Monsters once and for all. It is here that the image seems to stop, as time marched on around the SOULs now lost in the conflict. The world grew. The world persisted still. But truly this was the worst possible outcome... Wasn’t it? It is now Tyree may notice that he is not alone. Another was with him, in the darkness observing. They too, were entirely grey. It was a tall, smartly dressed monster, with the appearance halfway between that of a turtle and a man. They are frowning, eyes hidden behind eerily blank glasses.

“Tell me.  ...Was it anything like what you expected?”

The figure speaks, addressing Tyree quietly. Despite this, his voice was booming. Echoing in the expansive gloom. Or was it simply in his mind..? He looks sad, almost, as he continues staring down at the final resting place of Tyree’s SOUL.

[*The 'smiling' flower's smile only seems to brighten the moment that the watering can passes over him. In that instant, the flower sinks beneath the soil, leaving a clearly visible spot where a flower had once been. How odd!*]

And cue the Kappa scrambling to his hands and knees to follow the retreating flower. He peers into the hole for a moment, spluttering yet more apologies. When he is done he stands and looks around the garden. He appears ACTUALLY lost for once.He’d have to make a mental note of this for later. Maybe he’d leave a parcel for the mysterious monster as a way of further expressing his deference..? Yeah. He’d do that. If Flowey returned he’d probably emerge by a little gift box.

Kanna has been busying himself with his usual routine of closing. The sand garden has been raked back into order. The doors and windows are closed and secured. The lights, snuffed out one by one as he finishes the process of watering what vegetation litters the side lot of the venue. The watering can passes over Flowey in the bed of Yellow Flowers left behind by the King on one of his infrequent visits. And that is when Kanna pauses to double take to himself briefly. There is a slow blink of confusion as he notices one of the flowers is in fact, smiling at him. It has a face.

Small Favor

There is an amused lilt of the Kappa’s brow that travels from one eye to the other before he grins at Katsuo’s proposition. He lightly covers his stomach, still wrapped tightly in bandages mostly for his own benefit. Gauging his health and silently displaying the disability for affect. He nods, however. * A favor from me..? Well this is an interesting turn of events. You have always been quite helpful to me and our community endeavors. 

* ..So even now, I suppose I can do my best to return that gesture. What is it Katsuo-san?

Kanna stops what he is doing briefly, to peer outside his window while at work. His brow knits in slow deliberation. The atmosphere was... Shifting. It put him at ill ease.

* Hmm... Chill in the air tonight. Might have to call it early.

✮ Yo, K-na! I was worried about you, how you feeling?

* Oh, Katsuo-san. My health has been steadily improving. Thank you for asking..! * We still haven’t found those responsible for the assault however. I know you might be eager to... Assist in that regard. I assure you there is no need.

Well, there’s an assumption on the Kappa’s part at least given their disposition. Does Katsuo already have somewhat of a reputation for reckless vigilantism? Maybe. Who knew?

A boss monster approaches Kanna. "Howdy! I've been here before with Sachiko and I wanted to ask. What was your inspiration of making this place? Was it a thought that came up to mind as soon you were seal in the underground or was there like a spark that gave you the idea to open up the place?"

* Ah, your Royal Highness. Please forgive me for not personally attending to the event. Had I known, I would have had the pleasure of showing you first hand.Kanna takes a polite bow, folding his left hand into his stomach and inclining almost to a 90 degree angle. Seems by his address, he is already quite at ease with his apology and it is more a formality than anything he expected Asriel to take seriously. When he rises, he is wearing an almost faraway expression.

* To your question though, I begin by asking another to mull on while explaining. You are aware of the Wishing Room and the stories that fill the Echo Flowers there, yes..?* The inspiration is in the name itself, funnily enough. I wanted to give more than just a voice to some of the requests I would hear there in passing. To me, some of those dreams were very much obtainable.. Even trapped as we are here, Underground.* What started as a small service to the community grew into the happy business you see now. I collect wishes you see, my Prince.

* And then me and my friends do our best to see them fulfilled.
