Don’t restrain yourself cuz you think it might be unrealistic

Write every fucking character gay, trans, bi, whatever.

Make everyone LGBT. Make everyone deaf, blind, paraplegic. Write every character with a mental illness.

You can justify it by focusing on a particular setting, fantasy or real, that allows for everyone to be just like you.

Or don’t even bother.

Write everything you ever needed to read as a child.

It’s fiction. You decide what’s real in your own world, and fuck fuck fuck the majoritarian stories.

Your story is your own, and you don’t have to make it realistic to make it good or interesting.

You can make it too realistic if you want.

I was so hesitant in writing nothing but gay and lesbian and polyamous relationships. But I don’t care anymore, I mean, I used to care about writing “realistic” scenarios and depicting human life as it is.

But hetero stories aren’t doing that.

Majoritarian stories aren’t depicting human life in its confusing complexities and contradictions. They’re clean and family friendly models for human life.

And they’re fucking boring.

And I won’t limit myself to trying to write stories like that just because we all think good writing looks a certain way.

Fuck it, dudes.

I’m not about that straight white bullshit anymore, and I really don’t care if white people think it’s unrealistic or “pandering.”

Their opinions don’t matter in my worlds, and that’s how it be.

All characters are self-insert characters. They are you a little to the left, or a particular piece of you dialed up to 11, or the you that you would have been if the path of your life had angled just slightly differently, or you if you never learned this one important thing. 

Every character is part of you, but more than that every character starts with a piece of you, big or small, it’s you in one way or another at the beginning. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact it’s essential. That seed of you, that lives in them, it’s what gives them life, breath and blood and bone. And then you tend it, growing it, shaping them along paths you could never have walked nor imagined for yourself. Until they become someone else entirely. A wholly fictional character. But also you, a little bit, somewhere in there in the heart of themselves. 

Every character is a self-insert character. It’s only a matter of degrees how much of yourself there is in them when you finally put them out into the world. Stop worrying so much about self-inserts. Worry more about putting that little you into a story that will shape them into a big, beautiful character.

Okay, we really need to start supporting original content. Fandoms are bullshit. We keep relying on big franchises and popular series to supply us with representation, but why should we when there are tons content creators that are already doing what you want a larger franchise to do. If we cared more about smaller series then we could make it more well known.

I know that it’s important to make others see our representation in their media, but that should be a different goal. We need to end the idea that there is nothing giving us representation when there is, it’s just harder to find.

When you see someone you follow making a comic, reblog that shit, tell your friends, get the word out. Same with any other form of media, books, animations, anything. Not everyone follows through, but keep trying to boost the content you want to see. If that’s not good enough for you, make your own content!

If you want to make a comic, make one! If you want to write a book, write it! If you don’t know how to do those things, teach yourself how. If you want too see something exist then don’t wait for a large franchise to make it, support people and/or do it yourself.

I’m tired of fighting to get representation in a larger franchise that’s only in it for the money, when people are doing the same thing I want to see without being paid a dime! Straight/Cis people will make LGBT+ characters and get paid for it, LGBT+ people will make LGBT+ characters and the only money they get out of it is the occasional donation. It’s the same with all sorts of minorities. You’ll see some exceptions to this, but that’s because enough people supported them. If you support small content creators then they have the chance to grow.

Even if you think you won’t get anywhere by making your own content, you’ll never know unless you try. So make your own content, support others who make their own content, don’t rely on anything else.
