Bud 2.
Two years ago right around now (11:45pm pst) we met Bud. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s solo rendition of “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” was on a loop, as somehow we had decided it would be the first song he would hear outside the womb, though I had played him the record several times before he was born. Last year I made Bud 1. Not sure I can keep this up. Plus I accidentally down res-ed the thing, left out lots of loved ones, favorite photos, and squandered a good part of a week with my in-laws and the boy himself. And I’m certainly sure I can’t do this little boy’s big life anything resembling justice. Furthermore I still wrestle with exposing something so precious to me to social media, something over which he is unable to be complicit, but the prohibition thereof has thawed as I’ve been incapable of keeping my greatest achievement to myself. There are pros and cons to living life through a viewfinder. I suppose the pros include having a frozen tapestry of something like my experience of his life to reflect upon. (Bud 1 makes me cry every time). The downside is, no matter how hard you try or much you shoot you can’t freeze life. And I miss an awful lot of it – his, others, my own – by living life vicariously through myself. In theory though, these are gifts for him, future hims, who hopefully will feel the documentation was worth it on balance. But of course the gift is him. Thank you for ineffable light Bud-Bud.
