"Wake up, it's already 卯时 (mao-shi)!" Me: *looks up 卯时*:

It's supposed to be the two-hour period when the sun rises. It could be 5 AM! Fuck off, DFQC! When do you get up?

I noticed the Xilan Book seems to be written in 2-3 scripts like some kind of xianxia Rosetta Stone. Is it so long because it's trilingual? 🤔

The book says the cursed person has to follow the curse-caster's orders only if the caster gives the order using the Xilan Seal. We haven't seen XLH activate the seal very much, but I find it very funny that she somehow manages to do so in her desperation to get more sleep.

XLH thinks to herself later: "I'm finally free for a couple of days. I won't fix it," by which I take to mean she's somehow on vacation? Completely reasonable -- I would also banish someone to counting flowers if they tried to wake me between 5-7am on my first day of vacation.

(I'm not sure why she's on vacation. Because she finally signed up for the Fairy Exam and therefore has ended her employment with Siming? Or just taking a self-imposed break to prepare for the test? Or because it's a Shuiyuntian holiday?)

I've noticed in this show that Dongfang Qingcang's strategy for dealing with a head-hurting problem is often to say 罢了 (bà le), or "forget it." "A solution will present itself." Maybe he's too used to burning all his obstacles with hellfire, but it's...not a great tactic. Especially when it starts getting to Chidi Nüzi's soul and the unsealing of the 100k warriors. The book character pulls off some impressive feats of problem-solving and strategy, and I'm a bit sad the hard work just gets sidestepped here.

In this case, DFQC also escapes into a fantasy of subjugating Shuiyuntian...

By the time XLH gets up, it's 巳时 (sì shí) , or 9:00-11:00. That means DFQC was counting flowers and reading the Xilan manual for 2 hours minimum and 6 hours maximum

The way XLH's embellished the story of DFQC's defeat…it’s not too much of a stretch to think she writes other RPF. I’ve already hypothesized about her acquiring fanart. What other stories have you made up, xiao-huayao?

DFQC tries to disparage her, saying that she’s not fairy exam material because she...enhances...the history written in books, but she stands up for herself. A pattern that will repeat as things get more serious.

I can't watch this scene without thinking of the BTS take where Dylan yelps and whips his hand back because the steamed things are, in fact, hot

I wondered for a long time what it means to "sun wine" or "sun liquor," and @xunyin-archive explained that "some regional baijiu requires this step (at least traditionally) as an aging process. Apparently placing the wine jars in the sun can accelerate the aging process using natural light and ultraviolet rays."

惊扰天道 (disturb the course of Natural Law) and DFQC's utter disregard for it mentioned explicitly for the first time. He will throw fists with the universe. He will bulldoze everything in his path. What a great character

I like Changheng's grand, eager gesture of refining the whatever pill contrasted with Dongfang Qingcang's mundane, unwilling one of gathering morning dew

A love song plays on the soundtrack for the first time while DFQC is gathering dew. Reasonable to argue that the act of caring is what stirred DFQC's heart in the first place?

DFQC is one of those parents who didn't want the cat in the first place but then can't stop babying the cat

"I will flatten Shuiyuntian, grind Lord Yunzhong's bones up, and make wine of them":

I feel like this fantasy is just how he supports himself emotionally these days (and possibly for a long time before, too)

I wonder how Dongfang Qingcang knows who Yunzhong-jun is, given that Dong-jun was still active and presumably ruling Shuiyuntian when he was sealed, and he just got out. Was Yunzhong just that obnoxious 30,000 years ago? Did Shangque catch him up? Or (theory from @myhamartiaishubris) is "Yunzhong-jun" a title instead of a title+name?

putting out some of my thoughts here (bc I have been entertained by your rewatch posts, circ):

Complete book of Xilan: in the screenplay, there are scenes where the texts in the book/scroll can project/float out above the scroll (I may remember wrongly but I think they removed that special effect, maybe due to budget constraints? but would have been cool to behold lol)

Chopsticks: random thought but do you know that there's a belief that the further up a woman (actually not sure if it also applies to men or women only) holds her chopsticks, the further she will marry away from her hometown? so families will teach their daughters to hold their chopsticks closer to the base so they won't marry far away when they grow up. indirectly, it does seem like dfqc did indeed marry a wife all the way from another realm in the end haha

Steamed glutinous ricecakes: dfqc got burned twice by the confection bc when xlh handled the scalding hot cakes in the script, he still got burned indirectly via the one heart curse bc she got burned too (I think this part made it into the show, but very subtly on dfqc's part, I only caught his reaction bc I was watching for it!)

Dew-collection: in the script dfqc's dew collection endeavors are less graceful and elegant as portrayed in the show; it is implied that the man zips around like a busy bee amongst the flora catching dew drops as they roll off the leaves all over shuyu forest, as opposed to just standing/sitting/lying put in one place (still peeved as heck tho) lol

Yunzhong jun: dfqc not only recognizes yunzhong, but also remembers changheng who would have only been a baby still (or at least very young) 30,000 years ago. there are references in the script:

not sure why baby!changheng would be anywhere near dfqc with yunzhong back in the day

anyway dfqc going 'that whippersnapper changheng??' will never be unfunny to me

I forgot about DFQC's "that brat Changheng" in the script! It seems like DFQC recognizes him from 30k years ago, then. Kinda sad though...it sounds like the brothers might have been close when Changheng was young. No idea what they were letting bb!Changheng doing in DFQC's vicinity, either. Maybe that's just what his spies reported. Or maybe Yunzhong was hoping his little brother would get himself offed, lol

The dew-collection visual is top-tier. I love it.

Scanning the part where she burns herself again, DFQC does look down at his hand as XLH cries out in pain. Ooh I missed that.

Chopsticks determinism was the real 天道 all along. That's so funny.

They did remove the floating text special effect for the Xilan scroll. It just looks like screen-printed cloth, but I'm glad they did the "endless scroll" gag. You know what does have projected special-effect text, though: Chidi's Fate Book when DFQC and Xunfeng are studying it together.

Re. the floating text special effect, I had that same thought re. Chidi's destiny book. Seems strange that they could do it for that but not the Xilan scroll?

Chidi's destiny book: Agree that the floating seals do not correspond with Chidi's poem. This is Chidi's poem iirc (seem to bear no resemblance to the characters in the floating script at all): 半世锦绣半世尘，一舞惊鸿倾鹿城。韶华等闲随烟柳，凭栏元夜闻笛声。断肠几欲飞仙去，偏逢萧郎解语人。缘定花朝丝萝梦，红烛剑影断芳魂。 However, the floating characters are not gibberish, I don't think. This is how they describe a destiny book in the screenplay:

Translation: △ Upon closer inspection, the veins on the leaves are composed of countless obscure and irregularly sized celestial characters, chaotic and disordered, shimmering with gold, creating a mysterious feeling of a world within each leaf. My conclusion is that what they are looking at is the cumulation of Chidi's lifetimes, or at least maybe the most recent iteration of it. I guess it makes sense to have the floating text effect applied to a destiny book as opposed to the complete book of xilan, since each leaf basically contains an entire 'world' within it.

Chopsticks: so I did a quick check; apparently, that chopstick determinism folk belief pertains to all gender, not just to women lol

Dew collection: I do wish that we saw dqfc zipping around shuyu forest catching dew drops while all 骂骂咧咧 the whole way bc like mentioned, it makes for a very interesting contrast against changheng's lowkey/quiet show of devotion. meanwhile DFQC is 不情不愿 but he still did it and put in so much effort (do you know how hard it is and how long it takes to collect that big bowl of dew in reality?? even if the humidity level in shuyu forest is 95%, dew still won't be dripping down like rain okay!)! (also there's the contrast of changheng silently giving up by failing to deliver his cultivated spirit pill to xiaolanhua in the end, meanwhile DFQC is all but threatening to pour his devotion down her throat OR ELSE) I guess showing that much effort is not very cool-looking for a ML or Moon Supreme-becoming, but still food for thought. Yunzhong jun: Just occurred to me that DFQC's recognition of Yunzhong and Changheng implies that they all knew each other even preceding the Great War 30,000 years ago., because Changheng was obviously not present during DFQC's sealing into Haotian tower by Dong jun and the other immortals, else he would not have been so surprised when Yunzhong and Li Yuan informed him of the truth ie DFQC was not dead, but sealed away. Also implies that Changheng is also younger than Xunfeng, who was already leading troops at the time of his brother's sealing (as opposed to Changheng who was still too baby and kept from the battle) - this does not mean much sadly, bc apparently you can be many thousand years older and still be more brat (looking at you, Xunfeng)

△ Night has fallen. In Xiaolanhua's room, Xiaolanhua and Dongfang Qingcang sit at opposite ends of the bed, separated by two stacks of blankets.

△ Dongfang Qingcang calmly sits in meditation with his eyes closed.

△ Xiaolanhua huddles at the other end, leaning against the bedpost, hugging a pillow, propping her eyelids up with two blades of grass, and watching Dongfang Qingcang warily with pursed lips.

△ Drowsiness washes over her, and Xiaolanhua cannot help but yawn.

△ Dongfang Qingcang, who is meditating, twitches his lips and opens his mouth. He immediately tries his best to control his expression.

△ Xiaolanhua yawns again.

△ Dongfang Qingcang cannot resist this time and yawns as well. As a result, the two of them contagiously yawn for a long time.

Xiaolanhua: (Yawning) Look how sleepy you are too. Why be so difficult? Return to your room and sleep.

Dongfang Qingcang: (Awkwardly, scolding with a stern expression) I command you, you are not allowed to hurt yourself again!

△ Xiaolanhua is startled, becoming a little shy.

Xiaolanhua O.S.: This immortal criminal, isn't he quite caring?

Xiaolanhua: (cajoling) Let's not mess around anymore; can you please return to your room?

△ Dongfang Qingcang and Xiaolanhua are connected body and soul, and he is also quite tormented by her drowsiness. After thinking for a moment, he gets up and walks towards the door.

All these fairies dropping vital items out of their robes…first Changheng's handkerchief, then XLH's Universe Pill. Maybe they should consider not storing so many things there. Maybe Shuiyuntian robes are uniquely prone to having things drop out of them...(*starts theorizing wildly about the forces of fashion in the immortal realm*)

Shangque references some Taoist creation myths as fact, interesting.

Love that the high fairies' introduction is just them bashing Xunfeng in turn

I assume it’s either Climbing Ivy or Peach Tree’s voice giving XLH romantic advice (be tactful, charming, and beautiful when you appear in front of Changheng), but how does SHE know

It's impressive how frumpy they made ZLH

This show walked the line between having a likeable SML but decisively drawing audience sympathies toward the ML really well

And part of that was making ZLH frumpy. If they gave him a belted robe it would all be over

(Once I showed a friend one of ZLH's more recent photoshoots and told them it was Changheng, and they said, "That can't be the same person, don't lie to me.")

I digress.

Is it bad that I find Yulin quite pretty actually. I can't help it. I like bitchy characters.

“This is the qihuan firefly stone. I already researched it.” — I assume XLH looked it up in a book in Simingdian. Go girl, look at you reading!

What's this crane thing on Yunzhong's collar and Ronghao and Changheng's brooches?

I think it's funny that, originally, it was Changheng's fate that would have been changed by a meeting with Dongfang Qingcang's primordial soul. Does that mean fate was trying to set them up?

SYT leaders don't even ask how a random citizen stumbled upon their top-secret military operation (fixing the Haotian Array). In a restricted area, no less.

Neat how you can tell who's in XLH's body even though the eyes are closed

I never thought about what those colored comets in Haotian Tower were, but they're fragments of DFQC's primordial soul, aren't they?

Rewatch???? This is the feeling I had when I started re-watching (yes, I need this dopamine button), after taking my husband's VR glasses away😏 And you know what? It's like watching this drama on a huge cinema screen in 3D. This drama looks so good on the big screen, and the bokeh used creators effect works flawlessly.

As for ZLH, I'm apparently the only one who doesn't see the difference. I mean, his character Changheng's appeal is every bit as appealing as his characters from recent cool dramas. Like I don't really see him becoming any more attractive because he was already that way.
