Phase 3 Complete
That's to say that the third draft of my novel The Bad Ones is complete. Just last night I did my last read-through (hastily—impatiently—I might add) and handed it over to my awesome group of beta readers. I've already gotten some constructive feedback and am looking forward to the fully monty. When I finished the first draft, the word count came in at just a bit more than 86k words. After the third draft, it's down to a mere 67k. At first, the dramatic decrease was heartbreaking, but I'm confident the changes have made it a stronger story. I know the journey isn't over and I'll be doing an overhaul/rewrite/mental breakdown once all of the feedback is in, but seeing this particular hurdle behind me is immensely gratifying. It also means I can be lazy now. For a time... (What? Don't judge.) Big <3 to all of my beta readers and all of the people who've encouraged me on this journey thus far. Your support is invaluable.

So deeply saddened to hear about Harper Lee
She was an incredible inspiration to me. As a child of the South, where prejudice runs rampant, her characters spoke to me and helped me to see what I’ve always felt in my heart, that hatred towards others is never okay. Although I didn’t read TKAMB until I was an adult, she gave me a positive male role model to look up to, in the absence of one in my life. She and her characters alike were an inspiration to me from a reader’s point of view, but also from a writer’s. I’m sad to hear of her passing, but she lives on through TKAMB. Thank you, Harper Lee. Thank you for everything.
Sad news today. This lady wrote one of the most important novels of my childhood, later to become one of the most important novels of my career. Thank you Miss Lee.

Alright kids, it’s Day 7.
How’s everyone doing? I’m up to a grand total of 6,191 words over on the NaNoWriMo site, which puts me at 70,804 total words for my novel The Bad Ones. The vision of the end is getting bigger on the horizon and I. Am. Stoked.
For now, though, it’s back to writing. I’m sending all of you writerly types out there creative vibes. May the words be with you!

P.S. Feel free to add me as a writing buddy, folks!

Oh hi word count goal.
It’s nearly 3 A.M. but I did it. 2000 words closer to the finish line.
*high fives self*
Got the first thing on my to-do list knocked out, and then some. It’s my first time updating my counter (to the left) since stumbling upon it, and just doing that made me unreasonably excited. I feel like I’m finally getting my writing shit together, guys. And it’s awesome.
(I should probably go workout now)
I unearthed this beauty last night. Maps, lore, storyline, random scenes, etc. The hot mess that is my fantasy novel (my 2012 NaNoWriMo novel, though I’ve been working on it since I was 15... *gulp*). It’s next on the list after I finish The Bad Ones. One thing at a time...
Who needs willpower anyway?
The answer is me. I do. I need all the willpower I can get (and then some). If willpower were tin cans, I’d be diving face first into people’s recycling bins on a nightly basis trying to find enough to tide me over and keep me from doing anything rash.
My current predicament is as follows: I’ve generated no less than 5 new story ideas in the past week (two of which came just today). As a result, I’ve had to fight a valiant fight to keep myself from trying to start them. The itch of newness grows more profound the further I delve into The Bad Ones (2014′s NaNoWriMo novel), and, as a result, it becomes harder to keep from scratching (and I really, really want to scratch). As of yesterday, I’m 51k words deep, up to my eyeballs in difficult characters, confusingly inconsistent plot, and downright poorly executed narrative that, when I reread the next day, makes me want to laugh or cry or eat Ben & Jerry’s (or all of the above simultaneously). When so overwhelmed by your own creation, it’s hard not to abandon it for greener pastures, for something new and fresh. But I’m fighting it, and I’m winning (for now).
In a completely unrelated Google search (laser tag franchises, if you must know - did I mention I aimlessly wander the internet when I should be writing?), I happened upon the July cover of Entrepreneur magazine entitled The Virtue & Vice Edition. The article front and center? The Successful Entrepreneur’s Secret Weapon: Willpower. In the V&V edition, there are several articles on willpower, including how to ‘build’ your willpower muscle. Being a writer, I don’t believe I fit the mold of a traditional entrepreneur (if there exists such a thing), but I find the articles they’ve provided to be helpful when applied to writing as well as many other pursuits in life. It’s the kind of stuff we all know innately, but it’s nice to be reminded every now and again so we can get back on the saddle of impassioned creativity.
Side note: following writing boards on Pinterest has also been quite helpful in motivating me... and just as distracting as the rest of the internet, if not more. Follow and pin at your own risk. You’ve been warned.
So, in a bid to put this refresher course on willpower to work, I’ll jot down my new ideas with a bit of a sulk (because I’m still in the honeymoon phase and they’ve yet to become a huge pain in my ass) and store them away for later. Meanwhile, I’ll accelerate toward the horizon with The Bad Ones and try not to hit so many potholes that I start a new story out of frustration and lament the whole ordeal when that story, too, gives me grief. It’s an inevitable cycle, I’ve found. And, well, I should probably try to break it at some point.
Now seems like as good a time as any.
