Elyza stayed quiet, not only not wanting to reply, but not knowing what to say She wasn’t exactly thrilled to have a person with her again, but she wasn’t as frustrated with the thought as she thought she would be. No matter what Alicia was saying, there wasn’t a way for her not to worry about her. She may not be family, or someone she cares too much about, but she is a teammate now. They’re about to work side by side on a mission of life. Worry about Alicia was going to be a given, even if she didn’t want to at all. She shrugged her shoulders, a silent way of saying you’re welcome, even if she didn’t exactly mean it to the fullest. Gathering her items in the room she had holed herself up in, Elyza was at least grateful that she’d be able to take more than usual, now having another person to carry such things. She did her best to get as much as Alicia could probably carry and handed it over. “Don’t lose any of it, don’t break any of it.” She said, her eyebrows raised. Pulling the rest together, she took it for herself and sighed heavily. She definitely wasn’t looking forward to the next trek. Who knew how long it was going to be until they met their next shelter. “What way is your family? We gotta get goin’ and if you’re gonna say goodbye, we go now and do it fast.”
Resisting the urge to make a sarcastic comment, Alicia took the stuff being passed her without any compliant. Looking around, she gathered her bearings again, before pointing in a direction. “Back that way.” She confirmed. She nodded in agreement. While running off into the night seemed like the easiest option, she didn’t want them to think she had been bitten. Just because she wanted independence didn’t mean she wanted to cause them pain. Nor did she want it to be prolonged. “We should see if they can spare a truck, make it a little easier to cart stuff around.” She knew it would make it a little harder in that they would have to keep an eye out for fuel, but that was a bridge they could cross when they came to it. Setting off, she stayed silent, suddenly realising just how real it was. The walk wasn’t long, she hadn’t actually ventured that far away, only about twenty minutes. Once they reached the compound, Alicia turned to Elyza. “You’re welcome to come in, or stay out here, whatever you want.” She murmured. Before she could hear the answer, she made her own way through the gates.
It didn’t take long for her to find her mother and brother. Wanting to keep it as brief as possible, she didn’t allow herself to be pulled down, to join them. In a voice that sounded so different to her own, one that sounded so much older than she was, she informed them that she was leaving. That she needed to do this without them. That together they would be the death of each other. She could see the hurt in her mother’s eyes, but the understanding in her brother’s. He had always been the golden child, and he knew it. He knew that Alicia had always felt like she was left on the side lines. Alicia smiled softly, grateful as he interrupted her mom’s refusal. It took another few minutes before it was accepted, and Alicia felt herself being wrapped in familiar arms, the three of them stood together, not knowing when they would be able to do so again. Holding back tears, she smiled, wishing them farewell. Before she could leave, she was handed more blankets, some food and a set of keys. At least the journey hadn’t been a total waste, she couldn’t help but think, Elyza wouldn’t be too annoyed at the time spent here. Thanking them, and telling them she would see them again soon, she turned to leave. Meeting the blonde again, she tossed the keys to her, before loading up the back with their supplies. Jumping into the vehicle, she quickly wiped away a tear before it could fall down her face. “Where to now?” She asked, turning to the other girl.
