Not surprisingly, the unparalleled Carlyle Residences on the outskirts of Beverly Hills lists “24 hour white-glove concierge services” as its number one resident amenity.

In San Diego, the most conscientious and attentive building managers understand that concierge service is critical, but many residences have yet to embrace this staple of luxury living. Where concierge service is offered, it generally does not meet the white-glove standards in demand farther north.

Standard concierge service does not reach the bar

Concierge service in San Diego is elusive. Where it is offered, it tends to be limited. Most high-rise residential buildings do not offer 24/7/365 service, and where it is offered, the services are generally limited to package acceptance, dry cleaning and laundry pickup/delivery, restaurant reservations, taxi and car service reservations, announcement of visitors, and other front-desk duties.

Over the past 10 years Little Italy has grown into a lively neighborhood filled with cafes, restaurants, ice cream stores, pubs, art galleries, shops, hotels, and the beautiful Amici Park near the northern border of the district. Little Italy is also home to some of downtown’s best hair salons like Hyde Edwards. Unfortunately, Little Italy is behind the curve when it comes to personal concierge service. We have yet to find a residence there that offers it.

East Village is home to Petco Park and its “park at the park,” one of downtown’s nicest open green spaces. This district features a mix of high-rise and mid-rise buildings in a variety of styles. Residents enjoy this neighborhood’s central location, proximity to the Gaslamp District and trolley stations, easy freeway access and dynamic vibe. Residences with dedicated concierge service exist, but are hard to find.

San Diego’s Columbia (waterfront) District, neighbored by Seaport Village, the Manchester Hyatt Hotel, the Marriott Hotel and Marina complex, the San Diego Convention Center, and a series of beautiful public parks, used to be mostly commercial. In recent years it has seen mixed-use development, including a delightful variety of new high-rise residential buildings along Pacific Beach Highway. Some offer concierge service, but in a mostly limited fashion.

San Diego’s Marina District is next to the waterfront and Seaport Village and bordered by the Gaslamp and Columbia districts. It is characterized by its cleanliness and convenient location, and is home to many dining and entertainment venues. The Marina’s location, peacefulness, green spaces and supporting businesses make it a fantastic neighborhood for families, young professionals and retirees alike. Once comprised of warehouses and vacant lots, the Marina today is one of downtown’s most exclusive residential neighborhoods. Here, most high-rise property managers understand the value of concierge service, but not to the white-glove level offered by our neighbors to the north.

The Gaslamp District is home to more than 300 restaurants, including many of San Diego’s finest eateries and hottest bars and nightclubs. Variety prevails, with almost every kind of international cuisine and nightclub style on the list. The Gaslamp quarter is the urban adventurer’s ideal place to live with its dining, shopping, dancing and entertainment venues all within a tightly defined geographic range. Its proximity to San Diego’s best downtown hotels, convention center, cruise ship terminal and airport make the Gaslamp an ideal neighborhood for fun-lovers who seek a luxury living environment. Because of historic district building restrictions, many Gaslamp residences are small, low-rise communities; concierge service varies and tends to be limited.

At home in San Diego, you're the ultimate tour guide. You know where to go for the best coffee, and which restaurant serves the freshest “Farm to Table” cuisine. But on vacation, it can be tricky to know where to go without falling for the usual tourist traps. At ELM, our experts have trekked the globe to select the best luxury cities and countries to visit in2015.

Oman

Oman’s capital, Muscat, is only a short flight from fancy and opulent Dubai, yet it feels like a page from Arabian Nights. In this graceful, ancient city the air is smoky with the distinct scent of frankincense. Men wear white robes and women jeweled gowns. Very few high-rises disturb the dreamlike white-painted villas, medieval fortresses, elegant palaces, and gold-domed mosques. From its poetic desert to some of the most beautiful coastline on earth, Muscat is taking the mantel in luxury travel experiences.

Resorts of choice on Oman include the luxurious Chedi with its new spa and meditative suites. A notable luxury event in 2014 was the unveiling of the Alila Jabal Akhdar resort in the Al Hajar mountain range. It is the perfect base for exploring the region’s magnificent landscape of rugged, untouched beauty while experiencing the height of sumptuous comfort. Oman is also home to two new Anantara properties, a Radisson Blu, and a Kempinski on the way. The coming year promises more options than ever for those who wish to experience Oman’s breathtaking natural beauty.

Puerto Plata, D.R.

Far from the resort-jammed beaches of Punta Cana, luxury developments on the Dominican Republic’s less-frequented northern shore fly largely under the radar. New Puerto Plata offerings in 2015 promise to lure well-heeled sun-seekers. First up is The Gansevoort, offering three-bedroom apartments with private pools, and four-bedroom penthouses with rooftop hot tubs. Later in 2015, the Aman Villas will become the second Caribbean outpost from Singapore-based Aman resorts and the first golf-integrated Aman Resort. It’s the first phase of a development that aims to introduce some 400 residential villas, along with sports and equestrian facilities. Each is a welcomed change from the island’s cookie-cutter all-inclusives and a promising sign of what’s to come in the luxury circuit.

Andaman, Islands

Long fabled among travelers for its legendary beaches, world-class diving and far-flung location in the middle of nowhere, the Andaman Islands are still the ideal place to get away from it all. Lovely, opaque emerald waters are surrounded by primeval jungle and mangrove forest, and snow-white beaches melt under breathtaking sunsets on this archipelago that until recently was closed to visitors.

The population is a friendly masala of South and Southeast Asian settlers, as well as Negrito ethnic groups whose arrival here still has anthropologists baffled. Andaman is home to boutique hotel Jalakara, a gorgeous eight-suite rainforest hideaway perched on a beautiful hillside that backs into virgin rainforest in the heart of the Havelock Island. Don’t look for their website. They haven’t got one. This luxury destination doesn’t want to attract that much attention. Bonus: You can now fly directly from Bangkok, bypassing the three-day journey by boat!

Tulum, Mexico

If your dream Mexican beach vacation is less about mega-resorts and more about munching on tacos under a palapa by the sea, taking luxury yoga classes at dawn, and visiting Mayan ruins, then a visit to Tulum will most certainly fit the bill. In years gone by, Tulum was a favorite destination of hippie backpackers. Then it quietly emerged as a spot favored by celebrities looking for a rustic, wind and solar-powered beach bungalow in which to escape for a while. Tulum is green and eco-chic, going back to luxury basics, preserving nature, and wrapping guests in a feel-good atmosphere.

Fez, Morocco

About 240 miles northeast of Marrakesh, Morocco lies the lavish and sophisticated mosques, medina, monuments and mountains of Fez. Seemingly blind alleys open on squares decorated by exquisite fountains and filled with rhythmic music, aromatic food stands, craft workshops and an endless parade of people. One of the most notable places of luxury is the Hotel Sahrai, where history meets lavish lifestyle. Or stay at the tiny Karawan Riad, whose seven renovated suites offer a modern alternative to more traditional riad hotels. Our final favorite is Palais Faraj, a 19th-century palace transformed by architect Jean-Baptiste Barian.

So far, overdevelopment isn’t an issue. Whether this will last—especially in light of the 2015 debut of an upgraded airport, set to accommodate 2.5 million passengers (five times the current volume)—is anyone’s guess.

Honorable mention

These destinations quite top the list, but we can’t resist including them.

St. Lucia: This ravishing island of emerald mountains and golden beaches is still little-visited except for cruise-ships. Offering premier diving and snorkeling, hikeable rainforests and a drive-in volcano, St. Lucia has all the right stuff for the adventurer who likes to stay off the beaten path. Nature-lovers swim alongside dolphins, watch sea turtles laying eggs on Grand Anse beach, or observe iguanas. Thrill-seekers climb the Piton Mountains, kitesurf Sandy Beach, or dive coral-crusted undersea walls.

Milan, Italy: Milan is a city of lavish wealth and almost frightening elegance. But in 2015, Italy’s second-largest city will welcome all kinds of travelers. Expo 2015 – the latest of World Fairs held since the mid-1800s – will take place between May and October with a focus on food. The 1.1 million square meter fairgrounds will be laid out like a classical Roman city. Explore the future food district, watch cooking demos, wander a plaza full of street musicians or indulge in nighttime wine-tastings.

Toronto, Canada: This multicultural Canadian city promises extra vibrancy in 2015. An estimated 250,000 visitors will arrive for the Pan American Games. Public works projects have advanced, including the Union Pearson Express train, which will whizz passengers from Toronto’s airport to downtown in 25 minutes. The year will see further enhancements to Toronto’s already drool-worthy restaurant scene. The influences of nearby New York and Montreal keep the social scene cutting-edge, with live music thriving in grassroots bars.

Macau, China: Macau has grown into a mélange of new world glamour and old world grit. Its Chinese- Portuguese heritage has birthed a fusion cuisine unrivaled elsewhere in the world. Main influences include European, African, Indian and Chinese. Where else can you make an incense offering at an ancient Chinese Buddhist temple, take the world’s highest bungee jump and enjoy a Michelin-star meal and a street food midnight snack? With a new light rail system in the works, plus a slew of new casinos under construction, 2015 promises to be an exciting year for Macau.

Amazing Employee Perks

When the job conversation gets around to talking about benefits, applicants and employees know to ask about 401(k) plans and health insurance. But what about 5-star perks like fertility benefit programs, childcare or concierge services? Today’s savviest companies know that providing high quality perks can help them recruit and retain the very best employees.

Compensation is a hot topic. According to a 2014 Glassdoor survey, 39% of American workers say they don't get paid fairly for their efforts. When that much of the workforce -- 42% of women surveyed and 34% of men -- feel they're under-compensated for their work, employee morale and performance suffer. Furthermore, 57% of workers surveyed said it's up to employers, rather than the government, to address compensation issues.

Smart companies are taking notice. Employee-focused perks are not exclusive to Fortune 500 companies. Smaller organizations are getting into the game because they know they face stiff competition for the best employees, and keeping a great employee is far more cost-efficient than managing turnover. And, of course, perks help to define the corporate culture.

At ELM we’ve composed our own list of the worthiest employee perks, along with examples of companies across the U.S. who offer them. Our favorite perks are interesting, valuable and rewarding. Our favorite companies offer compensation and benefits that build camaraderie and a strong culture.

Funded inspiration

At Brooklyn-based brand innovation studio BBMG, employees are granted two separate accounts: an “inspiration” account and a “professional development” account. Each person receives $500 annually in each account, to use as they see fit. The professional development account must be used on something specifically related to the job title. But the inspiration account has only one criterion — personal growth. “Anything that will push them to discover new facets of themselves, new interests and passions or further develop existing ones satisfies the criteria,” says Carola Beeney, marketing and communications manager at BBMG, to DailyWorth.

The company itself benefits from this investment in inspiration, says Beeney. “Employees come to work feeling inspired, more creative and happier having done something they might not otherwise have done,” she says.

Mobile spa

In addition to having the opportunity to work on amazing technology with incredibly smart and talented people, the perks at Qualcomm are generous. Qualcomm not only pays its summer interns but it also provides relocation packages, with all the perks. Qualcomm employees enjoy their own private farmer’s market, “The Farm Stand.” Qualcomm matches employee charitable contributions one-for-one. And full time employees get a special perk: Qualcomm's mobile spa.

Sporting events and concert tickets

The Bingham McCutchen law firm offers its Boston-based employees two box seats to a Red Sox game every year, playoffs and championships included. Although seniority determines eligibility, Bingham delivers the perk to as many of its lawyers as possible. Bingham also raffles tickets to concerts at TD Garden, Gillette Stadium, and Fenway Park.

Work abroad

It’s all in a day’s work for employees of San Francisco-based Expensify, a start-up that specializes in the less-than-glamorous world of expense report management. Every year, this seven-year-old company offers its employees the opportunity to visit a different country to travel and work for a month. Past destinations include Thailand, Vietnam, India, Portugal and this year, Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Five minutes of fame

There’s a reason Google is ranked in the top five of Fortune magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” in the past eight years. Google doesn't just offer employees a stimulating environment to work and create; the company also gives them some pretty sweet benefits. Employees enjoy oil changes, car washes, massages and yoga, a play room, back-up child care assistance, and $12,000 annually in tuition reimbursement.

However, perks go beyond the office: three winners of Google's annual talent show opened for Bruno Mars. Another particularly progressive benefit is that both dads and moms have access of up to 12 weeks of baby bonding time, 9 of which are paid.

Concierge service

At the family company SC Johnson & Son, over 12,000 employees have access to a concierge service that will see to it that their chores get done. The Wisconsin-based maker of Pledge and Windex offers an on-site employee concierge to handle their daily tasks and chores. Workers can request a concierge to pick up groceries, shop for the best deals on car insurance, interview potential nannies, take a car in for oil changes, stand in line for concert tickets and more. Stress goes way down, productivity and morale go way up.

Scripps Health and Ernst & Young also provide concierge services to employees.

Human egg freezing

One extreme perk recently introduced by Apple and Facebook is stirring up quite the controversy. Both now fund egg freezing for women who wish to delay the start of their families. Apple said the benefit empowers women, while critics argue that it sends the message that employees must delay having children in order to succeed in the workplace. Either way, both employers are addressing the issue of social consequences faced by employees who choose to make work the priority.

Paid parental leave

Like many companies, the Microsoft Corporation gives new parents at the company generous maternity and paternity leave. What sets Microsoft apart from most others is that the leave is paid. All of it.

Microsoft also provides a variety of support systems, such as mentoring programs and health care coverage for Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy, which treats autism.

Cold, hard cash

San Diego-based Scripps Health doesn't reserve bonus checks for top management only. In 2014 Scripps Health awarded nearly $4.5 million in bonuses to employees from top to bottom who met performance objectives. Employees also enjoy a menu of fringe benefits designed to add personal convenience and value to their lives, including tuition reimbursement, on-site massages, concierge services and even pet insurance.

Equal respect

Family-oriented 3M may be familiar to consumers for Scotch tape and office products, but as an employer it is best known for offering fair benefits. The company provides standard medical, dental and vision benefits, as well as life insurance and retirement, to all of its employees, including those in same-sex partnerships.

Ernst & Young, a London-based global tax advisory service, also offers the same benefits for same-sex partners as for opposite-sex partners -- even in states that don't recognize gay marriage.

An entire new branch

Countless workers relocate to get or keep a job, but that usually doesn’t work in reverse. St. Louis-based online investing firm, Scottrade, opens new branches for some of its most valued employees who move. According to Fortune magazine, Scottrade has opened 20 offices for employees. One employee moved twice, to two different states, and Scottrade opened offices in both locations. In addition, Scottrade employees have never experienced a layoff -- ever.

A.R. Valentien: Freshness, Elegance and Class

ELM sat down with Chef Jackson for an insider interview about what makes A.R. Valentien one of the "Top 10 Farm-To-Table Restaurants in the Nation.”

ELM: You were trained under legendary culinary expert Jean LaFont, can you tell us what that was like?  What was the most influential thing he taught you?

CJ: It was my first experience working in a truly professional European kitchen. I grew up in Oklahoma and worked in restaurants through high school, and I had no idea how a real kitchen worked. I believe the most important lessons learned at this stop on my journey were a strong introduction to French cuisine, organization and consistency.

ELM: Who else has influenced you in your culinary career?

CJ: Jean Banchet at Le François outside of Chicago was my Master’s degree in my culinary training. This was an environment that was completely serious 12 hours a day. At the time, Le François was considered the best restaurant in the United States. We worked with the best ingredients and executed dishes to perfection. Mistakes were not tolerated. The two years I spent with Chef Banchet taught me what true passion is.

ELM: How did you come to decide to leave Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica and become Executive Chef for A.R. Valentien?

CJ: I had been at Shutters for ten years, the last two in the position of Director of Food and Beverage. A client at Shutters who was involved in the opening marketing for the Lodge actually introduced me to the project. It became obvious that we were coming from the same place, philosophically. It was an opportunity to build something new from scratch, which I really enjoy doing. I never realized how much I depended on the creative process until I tried my hand in this new position. After about a year I knew I belonged in the kitchen.

ELM: Your menu is constantly evolving. Reflecting produce available at the peak of season from local farms, orchards and fisherman here in southern California. How do you interact with these individuals to ensure the quality of your ingredients?

CJ: The old fashion way; we talk.

ELM: What are some of the pros and cons of working with local farmers?

CJ: I don't believe there are any cons. We change our menu daily and can utilize whatever is available and at its peak. It requires a passionate staff and a little extra effort but it's well worth it.

ELM: A.R. Valentine has been named one of the top ten farm-to-table restaurants in the nation. What is your farm-to-table signature dish? Can you describe it from a chef’s perspective?

CJ: There really isn't a signature dish; more of a signature style. We choose to keep things relatively simple and let the foodstuffs speak for themselves.

ELM: The holiday season is upon us. Is A.R. Valentien doing anything special for the holidays this year?

CJ: A.R. Valentien is located at The Lodge at Torrey Pines, a AAA 5-diamond resort. The hotel is decorated beautifully with multiple fireplaces and a 17-foot tall Christmas tree in the lobby. In addition to the festive holiday ambiance, we offer a special holiday menu.

ELM: What do you want ELM members to know about A.R. Valentien? What sets you apart from other fine dining restaurants here in San Diego?

Quality of Flight Starts with Schubach Aviation

Air Travel as an enjoyable, exciting experience is a distant memory of those old enough to remember when airlines openly competed for business, courting each and every passenger. Today, even first class travelers often have difficulty booking a desired itinerary, and still can't avoid the airport experience (at best is annoying, at worst horrendous). Frustration and curiosity lead to the private airline charter. Earlier this month I enjoyed a private tour of Schubach Avaiation.

Schubach is San Diego county's leading luxury airline charter and has served as a leader in San Diego's booming private air travel industry since 1992. As Kimberly and I walked through the hanger, we observed a dozen maintenance and avionic engineers diligently maintaining aircraft. The same engineers who meticulously attend to Schubach's aircraft are responsible for fleets of law enforcement and medical transport helicopters. Safety is Schubach's first priority, and no expense is spared when it comes to staffing qualified, certified, licensed maintenance and flight staff. Schubach earned a Gold Rating from the Aviation Research Group/U.S. – awarded only to operators who meet or exceed established standards for safety history and crew experience for FAA charter operators.

As we approached the sleek CJ3, it became quite obvious to me why this is a favorite amongst discerning business and leisure travelers. The aircraft provides superior reliability without sacrificing an ounce of efficiency and comfort. It is engineered for excellent performance, is well-appointed for comfort, and boasts impressive range and speed.

The CJ3 has a maximum range of 2000 nautical miles — approximately the distance from San Diego to Miami. The luxurious cabin seats up to eight passengers. Sixty-eight inches of stand-up room extend the full length of the 25-foot-plus cabin, allowing ample space to move around. Passengers are invariably pleased to discover a refreshment center, a private lavatory with vanity and a center line closet with room for garment bags, coats and other carry-on items on this fully equipped aircraft. Its external cargo area is the largest in its class, with 100 cubic feet of baggage storage available. As we discussed meeting clients' travel needs, Kimberly explained how she personally takes a chartered flight every year in order to experience travel though her customers' eyes. “It really comes down to a ‘quality of life’ factor. When you charter, you arrive at your destination on a natural high because it was so easy," she explains. She answered a few final questions for ELM members:

ELM: How many locations do you fly to?

SA: We can fly anywhere in the world. We have no set schedules. It's all on-demand chartering. Many times people just give me an address and I’ll tell them what airport is closest. Then they choose [their itinerary].

For example, we currently have a plane in Hawaii. We have a flight going to New York city in two days. We fly to Europe throughout the year, and we have at least one or two flights a year that go southeast Asia. But then we also do a weekend in Santa Barbara.  

ELM: What sets Schubach apart from other private jet charter companies?

SA: Our fleet is diverse. We’ve been operating out of San Diego for 23 years; we have more experience than anyone else. But the biggest thing that sets us apart is that we are relationship-focused. It’s something we pride ourselves on.

ELM: Do you know everything about what your customers want?

SA: Pretty much. We keep very good notes and customer profiles that are all electronic.  We are very lucky in San Diego because our passengers are very down to earth and approachable.

If you never want to be seen in a limo, only an SUV, you only have to tell me that once and I’ll do it every single time. If you own stock in coke, I’ll make sure there are no Pepsi products on your flight. If you want our crew to be color coordinated to your brand, that’s no problem. We are all about the details, and very personable. We conform to our customers' needs.

ELM: How many planes do you currently manage?

SA: Right now, we have 14 planes in our fleet.

ELM: What's the average number of years of experience your pilots have?

SA: Most of our pilots have military backgrounds with 20 to 30 years of experience.  The average number of years for our pilots is 25.

ELM: What corporate advantages does Schubach offer?

SA: Corporate flyers usually want to hit two or three cities in a day. It’s a distinctive business advantage. Imagine you're going to pitch a $500 million project. Instead of flying your team commercially, you're flying privately on our plane, having team meetings and discussing strategies. Impossible on a commercial airliner. Bertrand at Mister A’s - An Old Money Favorite

An old-money favorite since the 1960s, Bertrand at Mister A’s is still considered San Diego’s flagship of fine-dining. The décor is lavish and elegant, and timeless sophistication floats in the air.

A ride in the spacious elevator up to Mister A’s (named for the original owner and the building's developer, John Alessio) immediately sets the tone.  Upon your arrival on the twelfth floor, a replica Mona Lisa greets. Alessio and his wife commissioned an artist years ago to match the famous smirking woman. Now, the frame is inscribed with a message to Bertrand Hug, the current owner, from Mr. A himself: “Dear Bertrand, take care of Mister A’s.”

The food here is exquisite. Modern American cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences dominate most of the menu. However, many of the dishes exhibit accents from around the globe.  Executive Chef Stephane Voitzwinkler combines luxurious, seasonally fresh ingredients in a light, approachable manner.

Appetizers:

Ahi Sliders -You won't find a traditional bun as the bread for these sliders. Rather, they are served on something more crispy, salty and cracker like.  A welcomed twist on a San Diego classic.

Escargot - Three words: garlic, butter, parsley. A simple but decadent dish.

Lobster Strudel - Large sections of crisp filo dough-wrapped strudel are carefully arranged on the dish. Tender, plump lobster meat dominates. A pool of tantalizing cognac lobster sauce forms below the strudel for dipping.

Lunch/Dinner:

Alaskan Halibut - The large piece of pan fried halibut rests on a bed of shaved fennel between two plump scallops. A bright yellow saffron sauce is drizzled over all. Dollops of garlic foam accent the dish. The mild halibut and sweet scallops, both cooked to perfection, are delightfully brightened by the spicy, floral saffron sauce.

Truffle Mac n' Cheese – A luscious, earthy, umami pasta presentation. Black truffles and pancetta give this dish a touch of class, but at its cheese-packed heart, Bertrand's rendition is all about comfort.

Duo of Roasted Rack of Lamb and Osso Buco - The Osso Buco contrasts beautifully with the slender rack of lamb by its side. The succulent  veal proves  so impossibly tender, with the slightest touch of a fork it falls apart, melting as if butter. The juicy lamb bursts with potent gamey flavors deliciously blended with woody rosemary and garlic jus.

Dessert:

Creme brûlée -  A light silky smooth vanilla custard and caramelized sugar crust are topped with a tiny palmier, blueberries and blackberries. Heavenly in taste, texture and quality.

White Peach and Brown Butter Torte - Served with a raspberry coulis, this treat blends fruity tartness with a subtle sweetness that will not fail to delight. House made caramel ice cream adds smooth decadence.

Valet Parking

If you would like to use the valet service, pull into the garage on the 4th Avenue side of the building. Look for the small sign guiding the entrance. The charge is $1.50 per half hour during lunch and dinner with a max of $7.50 during dinner hours.

Parking

On-street parking surrounds the building, much of it metered. (Meters in San Diego are enforced until 6pm or 8pm. Check the signage when parking.) Entrances into the 5th Avenue Financial Center building are located on 4th avenue, Maple Street, and 5th Avenue.
