following from behind and.. trying his best to keep up with sam, chris listened. or, 𝘸𝘢𝘴 listening. he was more focused on other things. tons of other things. but the one thing he was focused on the most was what the boss was going to say earlier. 𝘩𝘦'𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵.. 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭. 𝘪'𝘮 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮- when sam had stopped, chris looked.. confused. it took him a moment to understand what sam had said, and then he noticed the keys. “ oh.. y-yeah, sure. i can, if ya wan’ me to. ” chris might have not known what sam said, but the keys seemed to make it obvious. he clumsily, but carefully, took those keys, and got in the car to start it. he could wait. he was.. sort of patient, yeah. . .there was no way he could wait this long for an answer.
Sam got in the passenger seat and immediately reached for the radio to make note that he and DC Skelton were heading, even though no one seems to care much at all. That’s not how things should go, Sam thought to himself, but that seemed to be this place’s usual MO.
“Alright,” still a little disillusioned, the DI put down the radio, only to pick it up again. The static on air was deafening, but Sam seemed to make out more in the white noise and crackling than there was. Suddenly a shade paler, mouth agape, eyes wide, Sam listened. And listened. Until:
“…mum?” A whisper. And just like that he was back in the here and now. Or in the then and there.
“Uh… M-murray Street,” he addressed Chris again, hastily. “And please abide by the highway code.”
“ hm? did ya say somethin', boss? ”
chris quickly told himself not to worry about it, and moved his eyes onto the road. “ er.. alright. also, 'course i will! no need to worry 'bout me! ” oh, sam should have EVERY right to worry about him. yes, he might have been a good listener and a really smart cop, when he wanted to be, but he wasn't exactly the best when it came to driving to a specific place. he was known for his clumsiness.. and for crashing cars when someone offered him the keys.
clumsyskelz:
chris waited for an answer, with his eyes all lit up. but.. he didn’t get one. slowly, that twinkle in his eyes vanished. he wasn’t going to let this slide, though. chris would get an answer, one way or another. “ o-oh, uh.. boss. but, you were ‘bout to- ”
no. he’d.. ask him later. they had finally found something, and chris didn’t want to ruin the moment for him. so?
he’d keep quiet. “ . .never mind. it’s, um.. not important. ” chris grabbed his coat, quickly putting in on, fumbling with it as he did.
Sam was nearly beaming with enthusiasm, if it wasn’t for the gravity of the crime at hand he might’ve even allowed himself a wide, toothy grin. But so, it had to be all in his eyes, that spark of rapture, the desire to win, glistening in whiskey coloured eyes.
“We’ll talk to Rourke at the mill. He has to remember where he dropped Saunders off that night,” Sam explained hastily as they traversed the station and made their way to the car park out front.
That was when Sam came to a halt. “Do you want to drive?,” he offered Chris the keys to his beat motor, an old car provided by the force. Just like his flat. Or his entire existence here. Nothing was real.
following from behind and.. trying his best to keep up with sam, chris listened. or, 𝘸𝘢𝘴 listening. he was more focused on other things. tons of other things. but the one thing he was focused on the most was what the boss was going to say earlier. 𝘩𝘦'𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵.. 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥, 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭. 𝘪'𝘮 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮- when sam had stopped, chris looked.. confused. it took him a moment to understand what sam had said, and then he noticed the keys. “ oh.. y-yeah, sure. i can, if ya wan' me to. ” chris might have not known what sam said, but the keys seemed to make it obvious. he clumsily, but carefully, took those keys, and got in the car to start it. he could wait. he was.. sort of patient, yeah. . .there was no way he could wait this long for an answer.
clumsyskelz:
“ y'sure, boss? cause, i mean, i can tell ‘em to quit if.. if ya wan’ me to, that is. ” chris would, indeed, do that. it wouldn’t exactly be easy to get ray to stop, though. he’d continue, when chris wasn’t listening. well, when he THOUGHT chris wasn’t listening. “ . .and, um, what exactly is ‘home’ to ya, anyway? because you keep sayin’ that this place just ain’t it. ” uh oh. sam’s got chris all curious now.
That question took Sam by surprise. He paused for a moment, brows furrowing as his mind began to race. What was home…? Shouldn’t it be easy to answer? Was that the reason why he couldn’t get back? Because he hadn’t made an effort to map it out in his head?
Home.
It was more than a year. 2006, that meant nothing. And yet it meant everything. Home was a stellar career. Music by bands that didn’t exist yet. Maya. His mum visiting the hospital. A big empty lifeless flat.
Sam dropped the pencil he’d been toying with, watching land on his report from the corner of his eye. He shook his head.
“Home is…” Wait a second. Sam yanked the report from his desk, sending the pencil flying to the ground at last. Eyes scan the text frantically. “Home. Home. Home! There… Saunders’ registered address. An address but not his home. Not where he lives. That’s why we couldn’t find anything. What did his colleague say? He drove him home since it was on the way? But he lives in Salford and Saunders in Stockport. Doesn’t add up, does it?”
Sam lit up. “Grab your coat, Chris.”
chris waited for an answer, with his eyes all lit up. but.. he didn't get one. slowly, that twinkle in his eyes vanished. he wasn't going to let this slide, though. chris would get an answer, one way or another. “ o-oh, uh.. boss. but, you were 'bout to- ”
no. he'd.. ask him later. they had finally found something, and chris didn't want to ruin the moment for him. so?
he'd keep quiet. “ . .never mind. it's, um.. not important. ” chris grabbed his coat, quickly putting in on, fumbling with it as he did.
“ i like ray. man's a great cop and a great friend. but, sometimes, he can be a bit.. . . how do i say this wit'out bein' all rude? oh! immature. just, um, a tad. ”
// it feels so weird roleplaying on tumblr haha i've been doing it on twitter for almost a year now and i've got TONS more life on mars accounts on there-
clumsyskelz:
chris went silent. to be honest, he didn’t know how he wanted to approach the question without coming off as rude. no one else was going to ask sam, so.. he sighed, and began speaking.
“ oh, um.. was just wonderin’, boss. are you.. alright? y'know, cause you’ve been talkin’ about this place not being ‘real’ and.. stuff like that. ”
yes, chris wasn’t exactly the brightest one in the room, but he knew things. things like this.
Cocked brow, audibly breathing in Sam gauged the situation. There was no point in confessing in Chris. From whichever part of his subconcious he might’ve come from. Maybe the part that thought he could use an ally in this strange new world.
“As I try to make my way to the ordinary world I will learn to survive.”
Sam’s corner of his mouth twitched into a momentary semblance of a smile. The pure irony of quoting songs that were yet years from being released was just too absurd. “I know what’s being said about me” - Oh, he didn’t even know half of it! - “And it doesn’t bother me. Let people talk. I’m here to do my job and if I’m doing a good enough job, I might be able to get home.”
“ y'sure, boss? cause, i mean, i can tell 'em to quit if.. if ya wan' me to, that is. ” chris would, indeed, do that. it wouldn't exactly be easy to get ray to stop, though. he'd continue, when chris wasn't listening. well, when he THOUGHT chris wasn't listening. “ . .and, um, what exactly is 'home' to ya, anyway? because you keep sayin' that this place just ain't it. ” uh oh. sam's got chris all curious now.

[ 💚 starter for - @masterlysamtyler 💚 ]: chris always seemed to think something was.. 𝙤𝙛𝙛, about his DI. the man was always this way ever since he first got here. he’d ramble on and on about ‘the future’ and talk about voices and all that nonsense. ray would tell the other man not to worry about tyler because he was probably ‘mad’. all chris could do was worry! he wanted to make sure people were okay around here. 𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙡𝙮 sam. and, that’s exactly what he was going to do. chris quietly walked over to sam’s desk, shoes not making much noises as they hit the floor.
Wouldn’t it be great if Sam had been tossed somewhen less prehistoric, when people where able to leave their immature commentary at the local pub and acted professional at their job? Or at least wouldn’t snicker at the idea of being “professional”?
Massaging his nosebridge between thumb and index finger, Sam let out an exasperated sigh. He was bent over a report, trying to fill in the gaps where there should’ve been an immaculate statement of facts.
Consumed by his work and his frustration, Sam only registered Chris when his shadow entered his peripheral vision. Slowly, the DI looked up from his report, squinting as to adapt to not staring at tiny writing for hours anymore. “Chris? What is it?”
chris went silent. to be honest, he didn't know how he wanted to approach the question without coming off as rude. no one else was going to ask sam, so.. he sighed, and began speaking.
