she is not sure, truly, why the duke continues to be so insistent on seeking out her company. perhaps he just finds joy in needling her, from the way her cheeks flush with anger & the laughter she cannot completely hide. she can hardly blame him, if that is the case. he is — an a m u s e m e n t, if he cannot be called a friend. still ; she cannot even bear the thought of giving in to his bait, the gilded invitations seeming to S H I N E as a beacon. ❛ oh, & you’ve found me out, ❜ she says, the distressed sigh in her voice as transparent as it is dramatic. ❛ the truth is, my lord, i see no reason to find myself in your house — or your bed. perhaps you haven’t impressed me yet. ❜ the words are in jest, but some truth lies in them. clancy is far from a fool, this she knows well. but this fact has never kept him from finding himself in trouble, whether this means he is drunk in the streets or has fathered a child. but — it is not her place to question him, her own position aside. there is a certain power to being the royal guard, but even the king’s favor cannot keep her safe if she oversteps her bounds. ❛ oh, yes, my lord. you always do say you’re MOST talented with your sword. ❛
“why need there be a reason besides indulgence?” he half laughs, one hand lifted in a vague wave of a gesture. his callousness and tendency to avoid ‘reasons’ and ‘consequences’ is almost without a doubt the leading cause of duke clancy’s troubles. he may be clever but even the cleverest make a few stumbles. “or curiosity, perhaps. aren’t you even the slightest bit curious?” he nearly doesn’t recall how they got on this line of conversation but, upon brief pondering, distinctly knows it’s his own doing. the duke has an inclination for the improper, title be damned. “and if i impress you now with my sword? will your answer change?” there’s a lewd grin blossoming on his lips and he plucks a sparring blade from one of the few bins that remains right side up. delicate as far as weapons are concerned, it balances evenly in his hand, even when he’s tossing it nimbly from one palm to the other. tricks -- the kind that make drunken partygoers roar with applause -- are among clancy’s specialty. as far as actual fighting, he reasons he’s better with his fists. "we both know you know your way around a hilt," he adds in a tease, eyes sparkling.
