sometimes i think about how absolutely BANGER Gem's villain aesthetic was in Secret Life. Like, she's got this whole vibe of infection and disease around her and it slaps so hard. First you got the End portal stuff with her arm and eye when she goes Yellow (alongside the implication of her ripping out her own eye to use for the End Portal) and later you have her as Patient Zero for the boogeyman/zombie outbreak. And she kills just as indiscriminately as an epidemic would, including her own allies when they offer themselves to her. Hell, she kills Scott TWICE and technically kills Impulse twice too, once by her own hands and once when Bdubs kills him right in front of her to continue the spread of the curse.
And then you combine all this with the idea of her being a deer and it just gets better. Not only are deer prone to uncanny valley vibes, but they're also extremely susceptible to Chronic Wasting Disease, aka Zombie Deer Disease. Which is scary as shit, like all prion diseases. It literally eats away at the brain and leaves the animal a husk. And it's completely incurable, 100% fatal, and spreads easily (not to humans though, thank fuck.)
Now imagine this diseased horned prey creature hunting and killing whatever gets in its way while infections far beyond its ability to comprehend ravage its body and mind. And everything it kills comes back just as screwed up and terrifying. Very few can fight back against it, let alone slay it. No one is safe, the ones who survive either do so because they're Something Not Human (Grian the Watcher), Already Biologically Dead (ZOMBIECleo) or just got lucky and never got caught (Scott). However, there is one last piece of horror unaccounted for. The carrier, no matter how thin, no matter how much drool leaks from her mouth, no matter how erratic and unholy her behavior, is still aware. Still in control.
I love Soup Group, because a cursory glance would make people think Gem Holds the braincell, she doesn't not, Impulse used to hold it but he gave it to Bdubs for an gift which left the Soup Group braincelless but Bdubs eventually traded it to Etho for a Saddle who traded it to Cleo in exchange for a bodyguard, Cleo then threw it at Jevin in an attempt on his life, he then traded it to Wels for a Snickers bar who eventually gave it to X who handed it to Doc for safekeeping who gave it to Ren who kept it until Scar stole it and traded it to Grian for shenanigans, Grian eventually gave it to Mumbo as a welcome home gift and Gem bullied Mumbo into getting it back. Everyone is about 60% sure Tango had the braincell at one time but no one can track where.
Pearl says she had it once but never said anything so who can tell.
Hey I'm a scarian fan who doesn't consistently watch gem or pearl but I saw your post saying scarian fans should also be going crazy for shiny duo and I would genuinely love to hear more about their dynamic and get into them more! Hope you dont mind the ask!
Gem and Pearl are…the sun and the moon. The earth and the sky. Andromeda and the Milky Way. They’re the push and pull of the tides and the salty winds of the sea. They’re coffee at midnight and a midday nap. A harsh whisper and a gentle howl. Waltzes in the forest and a foot chase through the fields. Bouquets and blades. Blushes and bloodstains. They are the breath of life and the kiss of death. In every universe they find each other - not by accident, not because they have to, but because they want to. Fate said “it’s you and her” and Pearl said “red is my favorite color”. Gem never needs a pearl to escape because she has a Pearl to protect. They weave the most breathtaking tapestries with the string of fate tying them together. They mold the world around them to reflect the beauty of their souls, and beat each other with leftover soup bowls when they’re done. They’re dangerous and devoted and death itself fears their fusion dance.
Not that they make me feel super poetic about a game of cubes or anything.
I know murder camel yuri is very much an “I can make her worse” situation but I just think that Gem actively encouraging and finding beauty in a side of Pearl that has only gotten her ostracized and called a demon in the past is AWESOME and SICK AS FUCK. I just think that Gem, at first gravitating towards Pearl again and again because she’s a great sword, coming around to caring about her genuinely by the end, going so far as to actively discourage Scott and Impulse from hurting her for the entire session is special. From an outsider perspective it doesn’t make any sort of sense how Gem could kill Pearl twice and then just skip around with her hand in hand afterwards. They just don’t get it. They don’t get how freeing it is to be admired for what once scared everyone off from getting too close, for what still earns concerned looks from friends and foes alike (ohh there’s scarlet pearl again watch out!) They don’t get what it’s like to be loved for what once made you out to be unlovable. This is yuri
So we all know that gem and pearl together is a force to be reckoned with. They have intimidated everyone on the server and rightfully so, they do not only have the bark but also a giant bite.
Now pearl. Pearl alone has so much potential.
She uses something that hinders her performance to her advantage, that thing is her ping.
She has the skill and strategy to solo half of the server if she went rabid again.
And that's the thing. She won't go rabid. She's kind and patient. Pearl has a potential that she couldn't show due to her loyalty and kindness.
Now you see, gem does not have a problem like that.
She's ruthless and blood thirsty whenever she feels like it. She is a leader, someone to look up to in a war. Gem brings the worst in pearl. She tells her things. She tells her to kill, to chase, to hunt. And pearl listens. She listens well.
Gem without pearl is like a warrior with nothing to fight with and for.
Pearl without gem is like a weapon without a wielder to protect and assist.
Gem knew. He knew that if she had gotten her hand on pearl she could rule the server alongside a with with undying loyalty.
Pearl just wanted to be friends with gem because she was fun :3
They've set plans, and strategies to defeat the enemy together. But before they can process anything, They've become each other's enemies.
Pearl asked gem
“gem. You don't want to do this, right…?”
And gem told her with a heavy heart. Knowing that there's no way that they could be together without betraying their day one alliance.
“No. I don't…”
But before they could finish their conversation. A MASSIVE F[redacted]G C[redacted]T SHOT AT GEM. MAKING THEM FLEE. NICE JOB JOEL.
And pearl, The weapon. Does what she does best and started to attack whoever her allies targets. Like a bloodthirsty and loyal wolf.
gem ran away, feeling disappointed and betrayed as someone that promised to be her friend had attacked her without warning.
And being betrayed by pearl. That's something that happens once in a millenia.
She hid in her cherry peak as the mounders surrounded them. Gem sees pearl in the distance, stalking thought the forest to find a prey, and they locked eyes. Yet weirdly enough, none of them opened fire. Or even pulled out their bow.
They just shook their head at eachother as a sign of remorse. Because that's what they felt, they didn't want to be forced into killing eachother, they did not want to hurt one another but their alliances. They forced them to do so.
They stood their ground, looking at eachother with looks of pity before Scott pushed gem out of the way and shot at pearl. She dodged before firing back the attacks.
At that moment gem panics and jumped across the trees to tell her to stop shooting. But Scott just ignored her please and kept on shooting. Giving pearl no other option but to retaliate.
Pearl told gem that she cannot stop what she is doing. But also that she does not have the heart to harm her either. She only wanted the Scotts.
Pearl went deeper into the inner walls of the scottsges and was pummeled by arrows, yet she still presisted. And impulse died without warning.
Shortly after she heard the yells of her allies and sprinted towards them. But she was too late for Scott and gem had killed them both.
Gem had thought. Maybe. Just maybe if she did not have her allies, she does not have her loyalty. And that she might join them.
Because gem knows that she could beat her. She knows that for a fact.
As she searched through the middle of the battlefield Scott ran up to her and started yelling at her to kill him. To take his heart and to not lose without a fight.
Without any other option she just did it. She stabbed him, gaining his hearts. And shortly after. Pearl came.
Not alone though, like she has hoped. She was with scar
Without any second though pearl shot at gem without mercy. Something that if un-character like of her. Pearl told her “dont make me do this, gem.”
I'm wich gem replied. Without sending her any arrows. “im not making you do anything! Why are you doing this.” as she ran away from them
Pearl chased after her. Though yelling “i don't know!”
Gem asked her “we’re friends! Why?!” and pearl repeated herself. “i don't know!!”
When they met again, pearl has not attacked gem. She tried to talk to her. To megotiate, anything that would mean not killing her. But before she could do that scar had jumped in and attacked gem again.
And what does a weapon do when given a target? They attack. So pearl ran in with her sword. And quite literally stabbed gem in the back.
Killing her.
Pearl got a wielder in the end. And it was not gem.
i haven't watched pearl's episode yet. but there's something to be said about the fact that she knew scar well enough to know that, when it was the two of them, he would have too much pride to accept a sacrifice.
she doesn't want to win, and she tells him at first before she quietly tucks that secret back into its shell after scar's indignant reaction to her first attempt at self-sacrifice. she lets scar forget about it as they kill gem, and then as scar kills pearl. at no point does she try to say here, let me give this to you. she knows scar, but she also knows the pain of an ending like that.
but she misses a few swings, doesn't she? her legs don't move as quickly to duck away from his arrows. and isn't that familiar? isn't that something like a cactus ring, with two unrelenting fists and two half-hearted ones: a fight with two unwilling participants, a fight that was over before it ever really began at the insistence of one of its patrons
pearl is all too familiar with the sting of sacrifice, but then on the other side of things... scar knows all too well the tragedy of gifted victory, doesn't he?
