he hates this feeling, helplessness sinking in his stomach, clawing at his insides & leaving him raw. his body’s stretched out in his front yard, grass tickling his face as starlight bathes his exposed skin. bitter winds nip at him but he makes no move to go back inside, the cold’s a distraction more than anything, sinking into his bones & replacing the worries bundled beneath his flesh. his voice is quiet when he finally speaks, entirely out of character for him, it’s not more than a whisper. his gaze’s drawn to the glimmering stars that seem to mock him, fingertips curling into the earth. “ death didn’t scare me before i knew my own expiration date. ”
edith found herself wandering her old neighborhood again; something she’d made a nightly custom since returning to hawley. bundled up in her coat, wind whipping her hair behind her, she paused when she noticed a familiar man laying on the frozen ground. she slowly walked up and laid beside him, eyes moving from his face to the sky she’d fallen so deeply in love with over the years. his words made her heart sink, though, and a guilt so crushing came upon her that she almost found it hard to breathe. “you don’t know it,” she replied just as quietly, tears pricking her eyes from the cold and the blame she put on herself. “you won’t know it until it’s arrived. don’t think like that.”
mvndacious:
“that sounds fun though, but i didn’t do it so i guess i wouldn’t know. new york sounds like a good place to call home, in my opinion.” she wished she had moved around once or twice, but nope. her parents were constants in hawley, never wanting to leave the place they had always known. “good, just hit me up next time you want a glass.”
“it would’ve been fun had it not been all the time. and had my parents decided to pay attention to us. but i did get to eat some great food over the years.” charlotte set her basket down and began doing self-checkout, glancing at car briefly. “new york is great and terrible. i’m just not much of a city person. i only lived there for my brothers and, at the time, my husband.”
mvndacious:
“well, she has good taste. not to sound bias, but books are great, and it’s a good way to use your time.” she had read since she was young to avoid her parents, which was what got her into writing in the first place. car laughed at him, “forced? wow, that’s comforting. they’re sweet, but definitely don’t think i could be in your situation.”
“i wish i had the patience. i can only think of a handful of books that managed to grab my very short attention.” kiran grinned when he earned a laugh from caroline, shrugging his shoulders innocently. “i didn’t think i could be in my situation, either. but here i am, watching my genius daughter drool over books. there are worse fates for sure.”
kitwillis:
kit hummed, thinking about it for a moment before nodding. it made sense, as much as he wanted to believe people would act rationally. “i guess that is true. i mean.. why can’t people just use the time left to be nice? to make friends and.. i don’t know, make the most of it.” he shrugged. “hey, i’m sure you do! you’re a person with interests and you have something. put in a packet of cigarettes if you really want to.”
“some people do consider crime ‘making the best of it’,” kir explained, gently tapping ash off the end of his cigarette. “the thing about the time capsule is, it’s very likely it will be destroyed if the impact site is anywhere near here. and if it isn’t, then who will remember to tell future generations, if they survive a world covered in ash and dark and ice, to dig it up? i barely have enough money to get by, i’m enjoying my cigarettes. but if it makes people happy, then, by all means, they should take part in it. it just isn’t important to me.”
clemcntincs:
she wouldn’t argue with him even though most children that created problems were the moody ones and the select few who enjoyed hitting others. kiran’s daughter wasn’t one of them. “ it’s alright. thank you for the apology. ” she affirmed as she rested her hands on maia’s small shoulders. “ – now, where are you off to in such a hurry ? ” clementine added with a gentle squeeze and an equally large smile on her face.
kiran just crossed his arms over his chest and nodded for his daughter to take over the conversation. “it’s my seventh birthday and daddy said i can go to the bookstore and pick out three books,” she replied happily, bouncing beneath her teacher’s gentle hands. “i’ll bring them to show and tell!”
clemcntincs:
“ i could say that and it wouldn’t have the same effect, huh ? or maybe the timing is way off… i’ll top it one day. ” she rambled. dropping off the end of her sentence as she dived into a new train of thought. thinking deeply as charlie spoke about her tarot deck. “ i thought of my grandmother’s wedding ring, but that’s kind of horrible. no one can use an antique ring. ” she added as she hopped off the counter to stand by her friend. “ – what about my favorite mood ring or my lucky necklace ? i won’t be needed it if, keyword if, we get wiped out. ”
charlotte listened patiently, nodding as her friend spewed out ideas. “plus that’s something you’ll probably want to have on you. i think the lucky necklace is a good idea, though.” she tucked her hair behind her ears and wandered over to her fridge to get a glass of tea. “maybe in a few hundred years when people have turned into mole-like creatures, a mole-girl will find the capsule and fall in love with the necklace. then she’ll be lucky. thanks to you.”
mvndacious:
car watched as maia ran over to the books, a smile on her face. “you really think so? aw, i just figured if she loved books as much as i did, she would get as excited as i did.” she lowered her voice, leaning more towards him so he could hear her. “i’m a sucker for kids. but don’t tell anyone i admitted that.”
“i don’t know where she gets it, i’ve never been as smart or book-loving as she is. not that i’m complaining,” kir replied, grinning and sending caroline a wink at her confession. “your secret’s safe with me. i was the same way until i had my own. now i’m forced to say i like them.”
mvndacious:
caroline knew charlie was trying to be nice, but she laughed abruptly, knowing that if charlie knew her family situation, she wouldn’t be saying that. she managed to compose herself though, considering what she said seriously. “yeah, i guess so. are you saying you didn’t?” she didn’t know much about charlie’s past, but she didn’t want to pry too much. “you can always depend on me for the good wine, charlie. no worries.”
charlie didn’t miss the laugh, but she knew better than to press. “my parents never really got along. me and my brothers were jumping from france to italy what felt like constantly. then we moved to new york. i guess that’s more home to me than anywhere.” she gave car a grin and led her to checkout. “i’ll keep that in mind.”
rosclyns:
“boy, do i get that,” she replied with a helpless laugh before shaking her head. “no, she’s fine. i’d love to help when i can, and you know it’s not a job,” she assured. roselyn sat with her friend, easing into the cushions. “trying not to think about it, but….honestly, a little relieved,” she genuinely stated. “i know it’s scary, and i don’t want to see anyone hurt but….i don’t know,” she trailed off. “how about you?”
kiran watched her with his typical tired, mildly curious expression. he knew she had a past that still had a firm grip on her soul despite the fact she never spoke directly of it. but he understood the feeling of relief she was feeling. “just about the same,” he replied before his eyes found their way back to his daughter. “relieved but sad and a little worried about maia.”
