ON TOP OF THE WORLD. That is the image that he wants to portray to everyone around him. That is the feeling he so desperately wants to have back. Fake it until you make it, though it's becoming increasingly hard to keep up. It's not something he would admit obviously, not even to himself. Any little rush, stay ten steps ahead. It's what he's known for, it's what Cory Ellison is good at.

But it's hard to have that image of a put together tycoon of a man when Bradley Jackson stands next to him. Not because of the fact that he wants to appear put together in front of her, too, but because she's already seen the messy parts of him. Not all... not all, but enough and more than he's shown anyone in what feels like a life time.

A shrug of his shoulders as his eyes gaze across the city that never sleeps. He and the city were one in the same. God his fucking soul was tired, but when Bradley speaks, there's a huff of a laugh that's released as he turns his attention fully back on her. ( As if it were ever completely away in the first place ) "Life has all the same kinda shit, and you just get older and just... kinda tired." Cory says, his voice not quite having the same bravado it usually does.

It's not until a few seconds later when he realizes Bradley has come closer to him. And Cory? Cory stays exactly where he is. She's thanking him, and Cory? Cory doesn't want to move a muscle, doesn't want to push and doesn't want to make a move because god forbid he be seen as the villain in Bradley's eyes.

"I -..." but she tugs him to her, and her soft lips are against his in a ferocious kiss and Cory kisses her back like his life depended on it. But in the next second, she pulls away, but this time he reaches for her, hands gripping her waist.

" -- It's okay." He's breathless, eyes searching hers, knowing that she already thinks she's made a mistake. And then he pauses, letting go, realizing what he's doing. " -- I'm sorry. I didn't -... all I mean is that it's... it's okay, Bradley."

the world stops turning at the precise moments their lips met , it was a cosmic explosion that ripped through the far reaches of the known universe . business is business . a fact that creeps down her spine , something that he used to remind her about on a daily basis. when alex walked away from UBA , bradley was left in a corporate machine she couldn't understand and it was cory that took her hand and guided her . she could remember every single conversation they had ; in central park , on the floor of one of their apartments , shabby diners , swanky restaurants and even on brooklyn bridge . cory stopped the noise .

when they exposed the network live on air , bradley felt a sense of her moral obligation being met . hannah still haunted her , as did claire's departure , alex's abandonment , eric's move to evening news . . . all of it was part of a clusterfuck . the years had been unkind to both cory and bradley ; he had lost his position and she had sacrificed her journalistic integrity for the sake of her brother , lost laura in covering it up , quit her evening news job and is now monitored by the feds . cory stood by her , even when she dragged him into this mess .

yet , their lips lingered , exploring the smooth surfaces that remained untouched for so long . fuck , fuck , fuck , fuck ! what had she just done ?! playing with cory's heartstrings ; she knew exactly what she was orchestrating . yet , deeper , beneath the shitshow of who she was . . . cory was everything to her and she didn't want to fuck it all up . but , that was the cruelty because bradley jackson always fucked everything up .

the apology falls on deaf ears , she's entranced in his eyes now and she lingers . her breath unsteady , her heart pulsating ; beating furiously . how did they get here ? new york felt so small , so insignificant . her fingers remained gripped to the fabric of his shirt . she's unsure what's next or what is to come , what had been started ?!

❛ i'm sorry i ran away . i'm sorry i'm a fuck up . ❜ whispering , her words shaking with such weight and yet , she's elated for herself . finally , it went beyond staring and sharing knowing looks . leaning closer again , closing her eyes . pressing herself against him , lips brushing against his cheeks and finally meeting his lips again . bradley wanted this . she always wanted this .

fingers ran through his hair as the other hand guided his hand back to her waist . did he want this as much as she thought he did ?! she stops , eyes failing to move from his and she could just melt into his arms . ❛ do you want me to stop ? ❜

BRADLEY & RELATIONSHIPS . . .

bradley thinks she's morally superior than those at UBA , but the truth is bradley is worse in many many many ways . dissecting the relationships she has with laura and cory in particular , she actively pushes them away . bradley isn't a thinker , she's a doer and this gets her into the most avoidable situations . she loves to tell people she's honest and she's a sharp shooter , but in reality she can't actually be direct with anyone when it comes to her feelings .

with laura , bradley finds ways to pick the relationship apart , she clings onto this notion that laura hates her family because of their political views or their ways of living . i think the reality of laura's tolerance to bradley's family is that they weigh her down emotionally and it's hard for laura to cope with that . bradley never really talks to laura about herself in a raw and honest way , she creates this baseline of who she is and doesn't even try to remain consistent .

bradley's bisexuality is something she initially struggles with , but she can use this struggle to jibe at laura and become quite distanced from her . the way bradley presents to laura in the beginning is a southern belle type ; naive , boxed in , lonely and vulnerable . bradley is none of those things , she is a social chameleon when around laura because she's trying to fit in really bad .

whilst i do think laura meant a great deal to bradley and there was a lot of love there , she actively finds ways to end the relationship or for laura to do it for her . because she doesn't think , bradley reacts and uses the people around her to cope instead of being honest with herself .

with cory , it's slightly different and i actually think worse , she knows the hold she has over him and uses him . bradley plays with cory's emotions , whilst she stops him during his confession of his love for her , she runs away . confronted with something scary , authentic and raw . . . it frightens someone like bradley because they genuinely don't know what to do with it . their love for each other is very real but also complicated by obstacles and misunderstandings .

their immediate closeness feels intoxicating because it’s rare for both of them , but it’s also charged and messy precisely because they’re feeding each other’s worst tendencies . bradley actively hurts cory in so many ways more than she ever did to laura , and she still thinks she's an okay person . in season 4 , she basically says to cory : i will always think you are possible of doing the worst to whoever for the sake of business as long as you get what you want .

in the whole wolf river investigation , which impacted thousands. of people , she thinks cory is capable . again , actively searching for ways to push him away . she could have asked cory outright or in a better way , but she chose to manipulate him and deceive him . the worst part of it was she did this after they spoke honestly with each other for the first time since season 1 and after she made a move on him . she reopened all of his feelings for her and then stepped all over them .

when cory confronts her , he tells her the truth about who she is , a liar and a manipulator . it's when cory is no longer an option does bradley tell someone , chip , that she cares about him and always had . but to alex , she just glazed over that feeling and just basically said : hey , i was fucked up and slept with cory . there was no attachment to him in her words to alex and yet for cory it was most likely an act of love .

bradley is not a good person and she creates a trail of carnage wherever she goes . i think the only person that sees this is alex , i think alex is the only one who understands how much pain bradley is in and actively listens to her .

they were always on a fucked up collision course , she just hadn't worked out if when they did eventually collide . . . armageddon would follow . she's self pitying . bradley was surrounded by nothing but carnage , despite her best intentions and her loud mouth , she was struggling . new york was nothing but a source of pain . she wasn't ever destined to be on billboards or hosting a top morning show across the east coast . america's southern belle . fed up and embarrassed , hal had this grip on her , always pulling her back . just like their mom .

cory seemed so safe , helping her navigate through this UBA machine . but , there was something else about him that was dangerous and unpredictable . she hated being in this vast ocean of strangers , betrayal and lies . bradley was no one's pawn , she was no one's plan or trump card . here they were way above new york . cory's idea of an adrenaline rush , she's had enough of that .

life in general is just sort of exhausting ! @corpatrem

aqua orbs stare at him , mesmerized . caught in cory ellison's spotlight , she never forgot his declaration for her . she felt the same . it was just hard to admit . cory had his own troubles , his own life , his own everything . but bradley never knew anything beneath the surface , she wanted to because , despite the chaos of the network , despite everything , he was always there for her . ❛ all of the time ? that's fucked . ❜

she could be vulnerable , raw and authentic . no need for pretence between them , she was fucked up , he was fucked up and right now , she wanted to rip the clothes off of his body . taking a deep breath . leaning closer to him , feeling the heat from exposed skin , almost giving in to him . the distance from those below added to their seclusion . ❛ thank you . ❜ vocals shaky , tugging at his shirt . their lips clashing for a moment , what the fuck ! this wasn't about cory , this was bradley jackson fucking everything up again .

runners , producers , cameramen , directors , assistants , editors , floor managers . . . all of them flooded into the set of the morning show . . . a familiar place . UBA was on the brink of collapse , the ground beneath them was shaking . alex levy had spearheaded the network into a new direction of honesty and integrity .

bradley stood in a sea of anxious faces and some she knew , some she didn't . wrestling with her identity , she missed the simplicity of local news . although , she couldn't help but love her newfound fame and finally securing evening news .

turning her head ; relieved . finally , the woman of the hour who seems to have secured one of the higher positions for the network . she always knew more than she let on , especially since rumours were circulating about job losses , artificial intelligence and cutbacks . sighing at her former cohost ; the star of the show . there's something wrong .

the people like mitch and fred were no longer welcome , but something else was permeating . seeping through the cracks . when alex felt unprotected and alone , it was bradley that protected her and tried to repay a debt of gratitude . even if alex wasn't appreciative . frowning at alex's words , rolling her eyes . typical . ❛ and that makes paul marks number one , did you know about this ? people are going crazy . ❜

things  have  changed  so  much  the  last  few  years.    one  day,   she'd  sworn  she  and  mitch  would  go  to  their  figurative  tms  graves  together   —   she'd  never  expected  him  to  leave  the  way  he  had,   though  whether  or  not  she  should  have  has  been  a  point  of  pain  many  a  night  as  she's  tried  to  fall  asleep.   one  day  she'd  sworn  her  life  would  look  different  than  this.   she'd  been  married  and  it'd  been   .     .     .   it'd  been  fine.   she  hadn't  loved  him,   but  alex  had  figured  that  was  just  how  marriage  really  worked.   over  time,   the  flame  faded  and  you  were  left  with  ash  in  its  place   .     .     .   she  just  hadn't  expected  something  to  ever  rise  from  the  ashes  of  her  heartbreak.

love  is  unexpected  that  way,   and  paul  marks  is  like  a  phoenix  lighting  her  heart  up  in  a  way  she  hasn't  experienced  in  so  long.   she'd  thought  she'd  loved  mitch,   but  it'd  been  infatuation   —   the  sort  of  crush  you  have  on  someone  you  know  you  can  never  really  have,   when  they're  perfectly  untouchable.   when  his  reputation  had  shattered,   so  had  the  illusion,   it'd  just  taken  alex  a  while  to  catch  up.   

paul  is  something  else  entirely,  and  for  the  first  time  in  years,   alex  thinks  she  might  just  be  happy.   not  just  coasting,   not  just  floating  by,   not  just  surviving   —   really,   truly  thriving.   she  and  paul  are  going  to  build  something  new  together,   and  even  though  a  part  of  her  screams  that  it  has  to  be  too  good  to  be  true,   she's  doing  her  best  to  silence  her  doubts.

❝     oh,   come  in,   come  in,     ❞     stepping  away  from  the  elevator  and  into  her  fortress,   alex  remarks  silently  on  how  much  more  it  feels  like  a  home  now  than  it'd  felt  once.   maybe  it's  because  she's  actually  sharing  it  with  someone,   when  he's  in  town.   maybe  it's  because  she  doesn't  feel  so  fucking  isolated  anymore.   it's  not  her  tower  alone,   and  while  she'd  never  think  of  herself  as  a  damsel  in  distress   .     .     .   the  parallels  to  being  trapped  in  a  tower  only  for  a  strapping  man  to  come  along  aren't  lost  on  her.

she  leads  bradley  to  the  sofa,   the  expansive  new  york  skyline  twinkling  behind  them  as  she  invites  her  friend  to  settle  in  with  a  gesture  while  she  seeks  out  wine  glasses  and  a  corkscrew  behind  the  bar.   her  friend.   that's  something  else  she  hadn't  thought  she'd  have  a  few  years  ago   ―   a  friend.   a  real  friend.   like  mitch  had  been,   but  better.   a  real,   true  partner.   someone  who  sees  her  and  accepts  her  and  is  there  for  her,   when  alex  lets  them  be.   bradley  jackson  is  the  last  person  alex  would've  expected  it  from,   but  she  doesn't  hate  the  fact  that  the  other  woman  has  become  such  a  permanent  fixture  in  her  life.   

❝     i'm  glad  to  see  you,   bradley,   i  am.   i'm  a  journalist,   though,   you  can't  expect  me  to  turn  off  the  questions.   don't  act  like  you  could,   either.     ❞     there's  a  grunt  of  effort  as  she  pulls  the  cork  and  pours  them  each  a  generous  glass  of  wine,   moving  to  join  bradley  on  the  sofa.     a  glass  is  extended  as  alex  makes  herself  comfortable.    ❝     you're  sure  you're  fine?     ❞    genuine  concern  knits  her  brow  together  as  she  studies  the  blonde.   picture  alex  levy,   worried  about  someone  other  than  herself.   oh,   how  time  changes  so  many  things.

there's a faint ring in her ear as alex's voice echoes through her , bradley was the definition of not fine . everything she believed in as a journalist was in flames , her brother's recklessness had cost her integrity and now , she's lying every single day . . . for this fucking job . bradley could still feel the searing pain when her brother was unmasked at the capitol , the weight of her decisions had taken its toll .

laura and cory walking away was the final straw and now hal . . . he's considering going to the authorities . she's fucked . she will never work as a journalist ever again , but , that was the price of loving your fucked up family .

almost in her own bubble , she keeps that fake as shit smile slapped on her face . bradley had the near impossible task of convincing alex levy that she was as fine as she could be . ❛ um . . . i could definitely turn off the questions . especially now that i'm single again . ❜ there was an art to deflection , but a season professional like alex levy would see through that bullshit .

snapping out of her delirium , she chuckles nervously and thinking quickly she throws more words out between them . ❛ i'm fine , just the usual bradley jackson level of fuck ups ! but c'mon . . . what's going on with you and that billionaire ? ❜ nudging her gently ; playfully as she hopes to redirect attention from herself and back to alex .

nestling into the fabrics of her sofa and scatter cushions , the skyline filled with glass , steel and concrete lit up with glows of soft whites , oranges and yellows . the sky was painted a familiar purple with the promise of a blanket of stars in the peak of twilight .

❛ it's weird . . . i never pictured you with a billionaire . is he like lex luthor ? have you vetted him properly for any skeletons in his fancy closet ? ❜ she laughs into her glass , taking a sip of crisp , rich wine . now , she's definitely expecting a roasting from her friend because of the questions . bradley pictured alex with a humble guy away from the spotlight , giving her the ability to shine when she needed but with the promise of an escape from the noise of fame .

things  have  been  so  strange  since  she's   (mostly)   stepped  away  from  tms.     it's  a  relief,   sure,   to  have  the  shackles  of  a  job  she's  had  for  so  damn  long  loosened   —   but  alex  would  be  lying  if  she  didn't  say  that  it's  more  bittersweet  than  she'd  expected  it  to  be.   alex  unfiltered  had  taken  off,   quite  literally  propelled  into  the  homes  of  the  american  public  with  her  sweat,   tears,   and   .     .     .   other  bodily  fluids.   and  she'd  won  an  emmy  for  it.   god,   she'd  really  won  an  emmy  for  it!   her  whole  world  had  changed  so  quickly,   with  her  own  show  being  the  top  priority  in  her  life  now  and  tms  shifting  to  the  back-burner.   for  the  first  time  in  years,   alex  has  so  much  control   .     .     .   and  yet,   she  can't  help  but  miss  where  she'd  come  from.   

she  can't  help  but  miss  bradley.   the  queen  of  evening  news.   they're  on  opposite  schedules  on  the  days  alex  is  on  tms,   and  for  as  much  as  she'd  loathed  bradley  jackson  at  first,   alex  would  be  the  first  to  admit  that  the  other  woman  has  grown  to  be  her  closest  friend   .     .     .   aside  from  chip   ❰   and  that  relationship  is  complicated  as  all  hell   ❱.

❝     it's  good  to  see  you,   honey,     ❞     she's  truly  enthused  to  see  her  friend,   but  something's  off   .     .     .   there's  something  not  quite  right  with  bradley,    ❝     don't  get  me  wrong,   but   .     .     .   why  now?    ❞      that's  the  question  that's  got  all  her  journalistic  instincts  sending  up  red  flags.   bradley's  busy,   alex  is  busy,   and  that  just  has  to  be  okay.   they  don't  have  a  whole  lot  of  time  to  catch  up,   and  now  isn't  exactly  different.   alex  had  been  in  the  middle  of  prep  for  her  next  interview  when  the  doorman  had  called  to  let  her  know  bradley  was  on  her  way  up.   surprise  hasn't  quite  worn  off,   not  yet.    

the  question  brings  an  involuntary  flush  to  her  cheeks  and  a  broad  grin  to  alex's  lips.   paul.   sure,   it's  more  complicated  now  that  the  world  knows  about  their  relationship,   but  sharing  it  with  someone  who's  actually  her  friend  makes  alex  feel  almost  giddy.   better  than  the  conversation  she'd  had  with  cory,   that's  for  damn  sure.   still   .     .     .   she's  not  about  to  let  those  red  flags  go  unaddressed.   it's  leverage,   and  she's  a  journalist, after all.    ❝     news  about  paul  can  wait  until  we've  talked  about  you,   bradley.     ❞

they had evolved so quickly , bradley had been protecting one person all the way through . her brother meant everything even when he'd fucked up his life to oblivion , he indulged ideologies that she did not agree with . but , he was family . . . the only person she had left . she could not watch him go to prison , she couldn't watch the last member of her family drift further away from her . cory had made it clear how she tainted him with her secret , her actions that called her integrity into question . . . UBA's moral compass had shattered . she trying to remain present knowing that her family is at stake and yet , alex was living on a high . an emmy . . . all of her accomplishments were getting bigger and better , of course alex would be winning accolades and living a life destined for her .

they were like passing ships , their interactions had been nothing but fleeting . but since alex still hadn't been to her apartment , despite promising . . . several times , she thought she'd bring the party to alex . there's a sense of relief seeing a familiar face , a face she could trust and depend on . she needed to be surrounded by honesty and truth because right now , she had nothing left . she missed laura . she missed being with another person . she missed living .

she frowns , scoffing in her face but in jest . she avoids alex's eyes , frightened to see what would stare back at her . ❛ um . . . you haven't been to my apartment . so , here i am . ❜ she waves the bottle in her hand , trying to divert and distract the attention of herself . the grin on her face does not give her away , it's kept together tightly and delicately . laura had made it clear that bradley had fucked everything up , she kept a secret from her . . . the woman she loves has been lied to . it was a bitter pill to swallow . ❛ jesus , i bring wine and you give me skepticism . it's good to see you too . ❜ tilting her head , the joke clearly falling on deaf ears .

it's difficult for them , they had their personal lives leaked to the fucking vault and it put their worlds on blast . but , bradley was still a stranger in her own life and anyone that she came across . alex's face turns a shade of familiar red but the statement that follows shatters like glass . ❛ me ? still a fucking mess , alex . nothin' has changed . ❜ brushing it off , she's calculated with that lie . her life was in flames , her relationship with laura was gone , cory was distant , and she was losing alex to a billionaire . ❛ can i come in ? or are we doing this at your door ? look at you all red ! ❜ grinning . disarming .

superman usually lingers after a rescue. not for a love of the spotlight, but out of concern for the people. the kind of guy who always wants to make sure that everyone is okay. a commendable trait, as remarked by the daily planet. or a true sign of character, as the daily star so gently put. two outlets that were usually kind to the caped wonder. now, metropolis 8 news? the outlet bradley jackson worked for? not so much. so clark knew what to expect even before turning around to greet her —  he knew she'd be as hard hitting with him as she was whenever he tuned in to channel eight.
