what's funny is that they could very well be having this exact conversation in reverse. likely have, too.

abbot's certainly had it, squirming under the weight of trying and failing to justify his shoddy decision making -- if not opposite to ben, then certainly his therapist. find a hobby. likewise: you can't live only for your work. takes one to know one, and he'd claim to know ben very well. what does that say about abbot, exactly?

IT'S A LITTLE FRUSTRATING TO HAVE FRIENDS. He realizes the absurdity of that statement the moment he thinks it, but perhaps he should add an addendum: it's a little frustrating to have friends who know him so intimately well. That's why he doesn't have many of them. At least, that's the excuse he gives himself.

"Like what?" He repeats to buy himself a little time. "I'll tell you like what," Ben says matter of factly, glancing back over to the bar to consider if he could just get another drink anyways -- he's a full grown man, wasn't he?

" -- I run. Long runs. When I --... when I can't sleep. As far as I can go. And... I...took up boxing."

THE LOOK ON HIS FACE IS CONTAINED ANGER. Not at her, of course not at her. But as Addison begins to tell him what happened, there's a muscle in his jaw that twitches as it locks, his lips pressed firmly together. Ben strides forward until he's only a few inches away from her, and a tender hand comes to hold her jaw, turning it gently so that he can see.

"Doesn't give him an excuse. What's his name?"

There was no way that Carmen could miss the faint shadows forming beneath Ben’s eyes. Work, as always, had kept him all day, and after that had been taken care of, he had carried Jo against his chest through those enormous rooms while murmuring stories half from memory and half invented from exhaustion. Earlier, she had watched from the doorway while Jo slept against him, a damp, little hand tangled in Ben’s collar. Outside, the rain had quickly begun to fall over the city. It slid down the tall windows overlooking the garden. A change in season that had wrought this forth.

Carmen did not move instantly at his suggestion. She knew that this would be the way things were even before Jo was in the picture. But it all seemed so unexpected? She had received a call earlier that somewhere across the Atlantic, a shipment had gone missing. Now, Interpol wanted answers, and people (as always) were already waiting for her. She wanted to tell them all no, even Ben at the moment. It wasn’t that she doubted him; she knew what Ben was capable of.

Still, Carmen remained there, gloves in hand. It was hard not to imagine Jo waking before dawn, asking for her with that fever-thick voice children have when they’re halfway between dreams and illness. Mama. The word always struck somewhere beneath her ribs.

“If I stay any longer, I’ll miss the flight,” she murmured, though she made no real effort to move. “And if I go, I already know exactly what will happen.” Her eyes lowered briefly. “I’ll spend the entire flight imagining him waking up and asking where I am.” The rain pressed softly against the windows. Life knocking again to remind her how ruthless it could be in its timing.

pale, slender fingers gesture vaguely toward the bar. the motions are quick and dampened with familiarity—the bartender returns with a small dark glass and an uninvolved smile. arthur grasps the cup without looking. clay browns remain steady on ben's hands, watching the glass turn beneath the dim bar lights. he huffs softly at the response. the amusement doesn't quite reach his eyes.

“ better be careful, ” he warns and takes a sip from his drink. the liquor burns his throat. in those few seconds, the sleeplessness around his eyes seems to compound. dark circles, shaggy twine hair, shadows casting long lines on his face. he is suddenly older and smaller than he initially seemed when the other arrived. “ lots of things sticking where they shouldn't be these days. might surprise you what you end up bringing home. ”

"WHAT?" Ben asks, raising a brow in slight curiosity, "You know something about me that I don't, Artie?" Ben turns back to his own drink, watching as the dim bar lights dance across the brown liquor in his glass. "Guess we won't have to worry too much then, I'm hardly home as it is."

It's a poor attempt at humor, as if satisfying some sort of requirement that two men must check off when seated at a bar together, shoulder to shoulder. He nods towards Arthur, " -- What's got you looking like some asshole kicked your dog?"

She knows that look in his eyes, she's seen it before in strangers and the mirror alike: the look of someone thinking of better days. If not better, then certainly more simple days, and it's a look he shakes off easily. For the better, lest she be given time to wax about how everyone is bad at things at first.

She plucks the card from the table and turns it in her fingers, eyes skimming over the information. Her lips purse as she scrutinizes the printed text.

"Not the first time I've heard that line before." The wary look she gives him gives way to a smile, a grin, the kind that has convinced more than one person to try a cigarette before. "First time I might actually believe it though. You strike me as the sort to have better plays up your sleeve."

"WELL, WHEN YOU KEEP LIVING LIFE..." Ben trails off for a moment to finish off his drink, reaching up to loosen his tie a little, "-- you're bound to hear a few repeats here and there." An easy smile on his lips as he nods towards the card held onto her hand.

"I imagine someone like you has got a collection of business cards from all sorts of suits. You can add me to the pile, but I can deliver." It is said without any kind of bravado, a simple statement of fact. His name held its own in this city.

"I know they probably comp your drinks for you, but do you want another? Or something to eat? I might grab another drink, but I'll probably head home after." He glances over at the bartender, getting his attention with a simple nod, "Another one for me, John, and whatever the lady wants."

Ben drawls, a mischievous glint behind still boyish eyes, comfortable from his spot on the sofa as he watches his wife stand at the sink with her hands on those very curvy hips. He'll stand slowly, stretching his large frame as he walks over to where Carmen stands, coming behind her as he slides his hands around her waist, pulling her flush against him.

His chin rests comfortably against her shoulder, head shifting just slightly to kiss her neck. "-- You don't have to look, baby," Ben murmurs, another kiss now, hands sliding up against her body. "You keep doing the dishes, and I'll enjoy myself just fine right here."

HE IS MORE THAN HAPPY WHEN THEY REACH THE SOFA. The hospital practically made Ted go out of his mind, and when the doctors finally cleared him to go home, his doctor boyfriend was right there to take him home. Teddy is stiff, but he settles semi-comfortably on the sofa, his clothes he had worn prior to his accident hanging on his frame. He'll let out a sharp exhale of breath, running his fingers through his hair with his unbroken hand when he feels Oliver's hands working the buttons on his shirt. "Whoa, hey now tiger," Teddy says grinning, but Oliver gives him a look that quiets him down, but he's still smiling fondly at his boyfriend.

The shirt is removed with a kind of tenderness and care that makes something catch in Teddy's throat as Oliver comes back with one of Ted's looser fitting tank tops so that he wouldn't have to mess with the sleeves for his broken arm. The pressure against his ribs is gone, too, and what had been unbearable pain getting his clothes on at the hospital ( he very stubbornly and very childishly said he could do it himself ) he had barely felt anything under Oliver's practiced hands.

His pants are the next to go, a slow tug off of his hips and Teddy is a little flushed, feeling equal parts warm and loved and embarrassed that Oliver had to dress him. Not quite in the headspace -- he's used to presenting himself as very much chaotically put together, but this was a tenderness and a softness that Teddy almost doesn't know how to sit with. "Ol, I can --..."

Oliver shakes his head, almost tutting at him as he taps Teddy's legs and Teddy will raise his hips obediently as Oliver slides on a pair of comfortable shorts onto him. He watches as the older man then raises Teddy's head and sits down, placing his down now on his lap, and Teddy exhales, calmer this time, looking up at Oliver with an almost sheepish grin.

"I love you."

[ HELP ]: the injured sender, unable to comfortably take off their clothes, asks the receiver to help them get undressed.

[ GUIDE ]: sender notices that the injured receiver isn't able to get undressed without help and offers to do so.

[ SOAKED ]: after a sudden downpour/being in water, the sender hastens to help the wet receiver out of their clothes to prevent hypothermia.

[ CRIMSON ]: the sender, noticing the receiver has blood on their clothes (either from an injury or another person) takes them to a private room to help remove the clothes and find clean ones.

send in “ five times saved ” for a drabble of five times in which the receiver’s muse rescued, protected or saved the sender’s muse. these can be times they saved them from a physical attack, or something less intense, dealer’s choice!

1. college had always been a time for exploration. alex had found her voice and after turning down the internship her dad had secured for her, had a bigger fire that raged underneath her — almost as if she had to prove a point. there was a protest at school, and alex was trying to get footage. the crowd started peacefully until someone threw something. then someone else threw something else. then everyone started running. a surge of people rushed forward and Alex got knocked sideways. ben reacted from instinct and grabbed her wrist; hard. he had managed to drag her behind a concrete barrier while the crowd roared past. “don’t — don’t do …” he can barely get the words out. his stutter is strong and his frustration only makes it worse. “stop — stop trying to do stupid — stupid things to try and prove your dad wrong.”

2. she needed a lawyer. the ai scandal was getting out of control and she was slowly spinning out. her team suggested an attorney, she shot them down. there was only one man that she trusted to handle this. ben. he arrives like he had stepped out of a paris photoshoot - suit immaculate, not a single hair out of place. he strides confidently into the meeting room. here’s how this will happen. here is how things will go. alex will find it’s the first time she’s been able to take a breath since this all started.

3. This wasn’t an accident. No crowds. No broken bones… just grief. Grief in its rawest form, rearing its ugly head. This was the kind of grief that settled in your chest and makes moving feel impossible. Alex Levy had always been strong. Always brilliant. Fearless. Accolades upon accolades thrown to her for being “America’s Sweetheart.” But grief doesn’t care who you are. Ben arrived at her apartment and found her sitting on the floor. All the lights were off, and there was a bottle of vodka laying out, untouched.

“Hey,” he says quietly, but theres no response, so he waits. Ten minutes, then twenty. Finally…

“I don’t… I don’t think I can do tomorrow, Ben.”

“Sure you can.” His response is immediate.

“No, I really… I can’t.”

“— Okay.” A finality.

“What?” She hadn’t expected that answer and turns to look at him.

“Don’t do tomorrow. Do now. Do the next five minutes.”

She stills, and nods. Five minutes at a time, and then another five, and then another five. Five minutes at a time, and Ben sits with her for as long as she needs.

4. Alex didn’t get sick very often, but when she did, it hit hard. She was not a very good patient, even though she would loathe to admit it. But when her fever strikes 103 and she still insists she wants to attend her meeting, Ben picks her up. Literally. She yelps, clearly affronted and she weakly hits him, “Benjamin Callahan, put me down!”

“I will when I get you to bed.”

“I’m serious!”

“So am I.” And he carries her all the way upstairs while she threatens divorce. Three hours later? She was out cold.

5. A family weekend at Martin and Sandra’s lake house. A gorgeous day. A lot of people with..similar personalities. Alex and Martin got into an argument over something stupid, which then developed into something else entirely. By dinner, neither was speaking to each other, and everybody felt it. Ben looked between the two of them and raised a brow. “Alex. Dad. Walk with me.” Father and daughter look at Ben as if he has two heads, but Ben stands firm and from Alex’s sighing and Martin’s grumbling, they follow. Thirty minutes later, they return in time for Sandra’s cheesecake. They were still irritated with each other, but talking. Sandra didn’t ask what Ben told them, she didn’t need to.

leaning into his kiss when he approaches, there's a smile tugging on her lips as she gazes up in his direction. "but you haven't tried this before." it's not like there was a whole lot of choice of places to go in hawkins, even less now after everything that's happened over the last few years. the small town they grew up in feels smaller than ever.

allowing herself to be tugged into his side, there's a soft laugh that leaves her lips as she begins to walk them towards the restaurant. "i suppose i haven't seen you be picky, but then again i keep seeing you have the same things. i do like the grillled cheese though. that's something."

She hums, just a single note that lingers in the air between them at his answer. She wonders if he knows just how much he's saying even without saying much at all. She doesn't doubt he's good at it, he sounds very confident in that part, but the most days is what strikes her as interesting.

She smiles, not that coy grin she uses like a cudgel, but a true-blue smile.

"I love it." Finally Piper sits up, unfurling as she runs a finger tip along her glass. "Gig work is hard, it's inconsistent, heart-breaking, and I'm not stupid; I know I'll never be the next Stevie Nicks or Steve Jones."

She laughs then at herself, at the dreams she once had before waking up to the reality of the world. "But, mmm, there's just something about it, you know? Even if it's only one person listening, just for a moment, is worth it."

There's nothing else she could do with her life, really. She's tried.

"-- Used to play guitar when I was a kid. Badly. Really badly. But..." and his eyes seem distant as if drawing up an old memory and staying in the comfort of that hold for a moment longer than even he had realized.

He clears his throat, shaking his head as he slides his card across to her. "If you ever decide that you don't want to just play bar gigs, call me. I've got a couple of connections that could get you playing on decent stages."

FLO'S THE BEST. Yvonne's interactions with her new boss's wife are limited by professional boundaries and the short duration of time in which Yvonne's settled into town, but Yvonne can just tell Flo's a real girl's girl. Yvonne misses her girls in the city. This might be the closest she's going to get.

Hearing Pete explain something so patiently, so reasonably, is kind of jarring. She's already used to interpreting shifty glances and noncommittal grunts. She's been approaching her shifts like this is any other gig, and that experience has served her well.

"You've got cameras, do you not? And—" She winces. She means no offense, but she knows how this is gonna sound.

"—look, it's a small town. You probably know the guy—could talk it out with him."

HE COULD FEEL A HEADACHE COME ALONG. Flo was better with dealing with...young people. Flo was better at dealing with people, in general. Pete is good with their young grandson and their son and his wife, but outside of their family? He's an old curmudgeon and it's a badge he'll wear proudly. If anything because it will make most people think before they start yammering away at him.

"No, we ain't got cameras, kid." Pete rumbles, raising a practiced brow as he watches her. "I ain't talkin' it out. And I don't know the guy. Look -- are you runnin' this bar or me?
