Gens double Cubs

Colby Chartier sniped a pair of goals and Kurt Thrussell added a goal and and two assists to pace the Cochrane Generals to a 6-3 Heritage Junior Hockey League win over the Medicine Hat Cubs Jan. 23 in the Hat. Chad Harrison and Talus Hume bagged a goal and an assist apiece with Brett Berndt netting a single. Slater Ransom and Reed Boothby had two assists each. The tilt marked the return of rookie forward Steven Tisdale to the lineup. He'd been nursing an "upper-body" injury and picked up an assist in the Hat. Austin Keller, Corey Goeson and Connor Rendell each added a helper as Cochrane's depth showed through with scoring across all forward lines. Mack Chalmers got the start in Gens goal, eating up 35 shots. Cochrane hosts Ponoka Stampeders tonight (Jan. 24), 7:30 p.m. puck drop, Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane.

Springbank Phoenix girl's rugby photos by Brendan Nagle The Springbank Community High School Phoenix won Tier 2 gold at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association South Central Zone girl's rugby tournament May 31 at Calgary Rugby Union ground. The Phoenix edged favoured Strathmore Spartans 15-12. Both advance to provincials.

Cochrane's Bow Valley Grizzlies travel to NE Calgary and tackle the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club in Calgary Rugby Union Div. 3 men's play May 30, taking a 74-0 win from their hosts.

CobraCats vs Phoenix girl's rugby photos by Brendan Nagle The Bow Valley/Cochrane CobraCats played their rival Big Sky rugby division foes at Sprinbank Phoenix Rugbyfest girl's 7's tournament May 23. No love lost on the field of play, as both teams went at it hard with host Phoenix carving out a 22-5 win at the invitational girl's 7's tourney featuring 220 players from high schools across southwest/central Alberta.

Cochrane Lions win CAMFA semifinal, Brendan Nagle photos The Cochrane Lions edged the Calgary Wildcats 28-24 in Calgary Area Midget Football Association Division 2 semifinal play May 22 at Shouldice Park, Encana Field. It was Cochrane's second-straight win after going 0-20 since May, 2011.

Chestermere High School Cowboys (boys) and Lakers (girls) visited Springbank Community High School Phoenix in Big Sky Rugby play May 14. The Cowboys downed the Phoenix boys 57-5 while the host Phoenix girls blanked the Lakers 43-0.

Cochrane Lions win their first game in three seasons of Calgary Area Midget Football Association play with a 38-21 decision over Calgary Broncos in CAMFA Division 2 opening-round playoff action May 14 at Calgary's Shouldice Park, Encana Field. Lions rookie head coach Jud Graham wanted to get the team's third-year players a win in their final season, and succeeded. They now get another playoff game May 22 in Calgary.

Rocky View Sports Association senior boy's high-school soccer kicked off May 6 at Mitford Pond, with the Springbank Phoenix visiting the Cochrane Cobras. Cobras captain Robbie Reid scored twice and Ross Mills once to pace Cochrane High to a 3-0 win over Springbank.

Springbank Community High School Phoenix vs. Bev Facey High School (Edmonton) Falcons in girls exhibition rugby play May 3 in Springbank. It had snowed about a foot overnight, cancelling the Phoenix Rugby 7's tournament. But the Falcons made the 300 km drive down from Edmonton, so Springbank gave them a game/scrimmage. At roughly 10:13 a.m. on April 30 crews from Rocky View and Cochrane fire services were called to Springbank Airport where a Piper Aztech twin turbo engine six seater aircraft had a landing gear malfunction after the front gear failed to fully deploy. On emergency responders arrival, the plane was circling the airport to burn off fuel before attempting a crash landing. The crash landing was as smooth as anyone could have hoped for, said Rockyview Fire district chief Dax Huba, as they prepared for the worst. Cochrane RCMP said that the two occupants of the aircraft survived without a scratch and said that it could have easily gone much worse. RYAN MCLEOD/COCHRANE EAGLE
