“If you do notice a change, tell me? Despite what you may think, I’m still quite new at this whole witch thing, and I cannae practice very often.” Gaze dropped to the book, and her face contorted into a grimace. Fell back against the grass quite dramatically, back of her hand draped over her forehead and eyes in an exaggerated gesture. “Alas I fear you are correct! Not even a last lunch time cram can save me now.” Stomach jumped a little as she giggled, before easily sitting back up, and brushing the greenery off her back.
“You may or may not be aware, but literature isn’t always my best subject. And this book particularly has just guaranteed my failure.” Tone a little more serious now as she once again picked up the battered copy of The Scarlet Letter. “Ironic really, because as far as I can figure out, I should be able to relate to the themes.” Rowena was rarely permitted the time to do homework which, combined with a father who thought educating a whore was pointless, left her academically bereft. Motivation and a bright mind had made up some of the deficit, but sometimes she fell far behind.
The witch paused and blushed a little, trying to hide the fact by fixing her hair, and looking down. “Ah, did y’happen to hear what was said to me the other day…before I…well, broke the basketball hoop? Unfortunately there’s some truth to that. Not in the school!” Hasty clarification, accentuated by a shake of her head. “They sent me to a tutor last year, and I…seduced him so he’d write my papers for me. Now I’m on my own, and failing. I’m quite stupid really.” Babble ceased and she reached for the apple remaining on her tray, and took a large bite. Demeanour entirely suggested she’d just recited a shopping list. Not admitted to cheating, or her personal shortcomings.
“I’ll let you know.” He wasn’t sure what he was waiting for, or looking for, but if he noticed anything he would just let her know, he guessed. If he let it heal on its own and ensured not to anger Gerard for a little while, chances were good that he would heal up properly. Maybe. Although it was very unlikely, because when Gerard was looking for a reason, Chris didn’t have to do much to give him one. It wasn’t fair, but it wasn’t anything he had influence on either. And so he accepted his fate, but knew that if he should end up with children himself, he would do it differently. He couldn’t imagine facing a son like Gerard faced him after hunts like the previous one. He couldn’t ear the guilt. Gerard was different, sometimes Chris wondered if maybe he was adopted. But the Argent family didn’t adopt children.
Chris wasn’t one to judge last-minute homework in school as he usually found himself doing the same if he couldn’t stay home in the morning long enough not to draw attention to himself. He just wondered why she did, or maybe he’d simply looked for some topic to start a conversation on, because - believe it or not, Chris was not very good at this human .. interaction thing when it didn’t involve a monster he hunted. Gerard didn’t believe in the traditional school system, he only believed in his very own one, but Chris was a minor and they had to blend in after all, which didn’t mean he supported Chris in any way. Or tolerated he might need time to study.
“You’re not stupid. You’d be stupid not to try.” He protested softly, frowning and shrugging shortly after. It wasn’t her fault, she did she best she could in her circumstances - they both did. “Gerard is a very literate man. He does prefer foreign literature, but it’s the only subject he deems as not being an utter waste of time.” Which meant he wasn’t really bad at it, which also meant he could help her. “I could help. With Lit.” Nothing else, really, as he was struggling just as much as her to keep up with assignments and projects and everything else. It wasn’t even that he didn’t understand - because he did when given the time to prep, but it was a simple lack of time keeping him from doing homework and staying awake in class.
“Not tonight.” Quiet words and she rolled away from kisses that asked for more. Rowena hadn’t rejected him before, and the sensation felt just as uncomfortable as the promise of making love. Mouth opened, trying to say something before failing, and closing again. Displeased, she turned her back to him and curled up, ensuring they weren’t touching and feigned sleep. “I remembered that time...with the hunter...when I was trying to protect us.” She muttered after several minutes of not sleeping.
Hands float, pulled away and returned to its owner almost as quietly as they’d found Rowena’s body in the first place. Chris was smart enough to know when to chase and when to take a step back. He was by no means trying to hurt or push, he just wanted to be close. With her. But not like this, not when she needed space. And he understood. It wasn’t easy knowing his touch repulsed her, but he knew better than that. He knew it wasn’t him, not .. really. “You don’t have to explain.” And he meant it, they were lovers, but that didn’t mean she had to give herself to him whenever it crossed his mind. “It’s not a duty, not with me.”
{teen}: “Even if the sky was falling, I’d still want to be with you. I’m not afraid of Gerard, maybe I should be. All he can do is kill me. But you remind me that I’m alive.”
“Don’t say that, don’t.. think about him.” He couldn’t lose her, he didn’t want to lose her. He couldn’t even bear the thought of Gerard finding out and hurt her, or making him hurt her. He couldn’t. “Ro..” Hands cupped hers, he brough them to his chest and his head down to kiss the the tips of her fingers, “I can’t lose you.”
“So help me, these children are yours as soon as they can breathe their own air. And you can get regularly kicked in the stomach.” Rowena grumped, only half joking, as a particularly exuberant movement from the unborn children interrupted her walking, and had her hastily sitting on the floor.
“I’ll accept that, you can teach them to kick me first thing after they’re born. I won’t put up a fight, and I’ll take as many kicks as you feel I deserve.” He smiled softly, but he meant every word he said, and he would do whatever necessary to make Rowena feel better. He’d understood he was the calm, collected one in their relationship for now, and he happily accepted that role.
{teen}: "The world is burning around us, Christopher. They're using our own homes as our pyres, and we're just standing here, handing them ropes to tie us down with." Desperation turned her nearly manic, clasping his hand as she dragged him into the middle of the road, in the middle of the pouring rain. "We may as well be the storm they fear," she murmured and looped her arms around his neck, crashing their lips together where anyone could see.
“Rowena, wa—” She had all of a sudden began to worry, she’d began to mutter words he couldn’t understand, at least not where they came from, but despite her rather short appearance, she had the strength to pull him along and he found himself in the middle of the road, no longer hiding from the rain with a with in his arms. He loved her, he thought it was safe to say they both were in love, but they had to be careful about it for it to last. This was anything but being careful, yet be felt no desire to push her away.
