The Mohren Pack was a heavily religiouis, nomadic pack that roamed through the Appalachian mountains - never staying in one place longer than a few months at a time. In other wolf circles, this pack was simply known as The Acolytes, a derogatory nickname for their pure-blooded homegrown religious beliefs. Throughout the east, The Acolytes have made a name for themselves through their strict trials, rituals, and sacrifices.
Their teachings fall back on the idea that born werewolves are the only naturally occurring supernatural creature and that all others are simply abominations and should be eradicated.
When a member of their pack turns twelve, they are released into the surrounding wilds and told to survive on their own for a week or more. If the child does not survive, then they were never meant to be born. Codie was no different. She was assumed to exceed expectations, being the daughter of the Alpha.
Her training prepared her for the survival, but nothing could have warned her about the atrocities she would see. No one had told her of the true horrors in the wilds of Appalachia. Not only were there all manner of predators to hide from, but creatures she'd never heard tale of, and couldn't describe. Their forms would shift in front of her eyes, but without the sounds that often accompanied the nights of the full moon. Some bodies faded in and out of existence, and as a young child who had trained for this, she wrote it off as dehydration and hunger.
She returned two weeks later a changed person, frail, gaunt, scarred. At the tender age of twelve, her late arrival deemed her particularly unworthy of the status she was born into. Instead of being welcomed with open arms, she was instead brought to a makeshift prison and guarded twenty-four hours a day.
Codie lived three years in a cage. When they moved, she was chained and brought with them. Given just enough food and water to survive, she spent those years half-delirious, listening to her mother's assurances that this is for the pack's safety and her own. She explained that during the time she was gone, they had been visited by some sort of witch of the woods and she had painted them a picture of a great schism coming their way, brought on by the hands of the Alpha's daughter.
Her mother whispered to her in the dead of the night that she should have died in the mountains. To try and break this spell or prophecy, she was put through harsh rituals and ceremonies that only left her body broken.
She did not see her half-brother until the night she was let go. He looked haggard and worried, and whispered that she needed to run. The sun already well behind the trees and no moon in sight, she slipped out of the cage and limped away from the camp, only turning to look for her brother. When she didn't see him following, she climbed up a nearby tree to search for him.
The scene before her played out slowly, the witch had returned and brought with her others. They all carried large staves topped with some sort of clear crystal and spoke in a language she didn't understand. The magic smelled sweet and rotted, and permeated through the camp and Codie watched as these tendrils of magic reached up from the ground and took hold of her family, her pack, and ripped them apart from the inside out.
It was pure carnage.
Afraid, she lost her grip and fell, landing near one of the witches and her trembling brother. Too hurt and weak from her imprisonment and torture, she could barely lift herself up. The leader of the witches whispered something to one of the others and picked her up.
She woke up on an actual bed, something she'd never experienced before, and with the an herb-like smell in the air. The woman who had brought her here explained that the wolves that were killed were eradicated because of their involvement of murdering members of her own coven. She and her brother were spared because her brother made a deal to help them find their camp in exchange for their lives.
They lived with the witches for years, learning to live off the land, what herbs had what property. While they couldn't practice true magic, they could learn the ins and outs of what magic meant and learn poultices and healing concoctions.
The witch eventually told them of a city across the country that would better serve their purposes, and that they were to be leaving the mountains to live there. They had the choice to stay in the cabin or come with her. Codie decided to leave with her, to help take care of her in her old age.
Now in Port Leiry, Codie is having a culture shock - having only ever lived in the woods without technology or many people around - but she's making do. She was able to get a job a the local pizza place, and loves listening to people tell their stories and her eagerness to talk to others and learn from them endears her to many tourists.
