This blog is dedicated to all of the coffee lovers who are searching for a place to study, relax, and/or spend time with friends. Jacksonville is the city of focus, for now, but I am looking at going up to Savannah and down to St. Augustine when I have the time to take a roadtrip.

Laidback Hole-in-the-Wall

Breezy Coffee Shop is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. To find other coffee shops in my local area, I’ve relied on internet research, but Breezy’s did not appear on any of my search results, instead a friend told me that I needed to check this place out. This coffee shop located on 3rd Street and 8th Avenue South, has a high-top bar for community seating, two-seater tables, and a couch area in the back. Also, on those sunny days when you want to sit outside, there are a variety of outdoor seating.  For customers who are wanting to hangout and just grab a regular cup of coffee, like me, they have a variety of mugs that you can choose from to grab your own, unlimited cup of coffee. Breezy’s Coffee Shop definitely incorporates Jacksonville Beach’s community and beach vibe. There are a variety of decorations around the shop, and the light blue walls offer a comfortable, casual feeling. Since this coffee shop sits on the beachside of 3rd Street, it is easily accessible for a quick treat and offers a variety of food and beverages for coffee and non-coffee lovers.

Since one of the questions on the oral exam was about the four C’s of copyediting, “clarity, coherency, consistency, and correctness”, I decided to look back into the four C’s and apply them to my last entry (Einsohn 3). I have tried to apply clarity and coherency to my entry by clearly describing where Breezy’s is located, and what the shop looks like. The correctness of my entry can be seen with no errors in grammar or punctuation. I tried to correctly place my commas within the entry, and use hyphens when needing to tie words together. Overall, the consistency of my entry can be compared to my other entries. Throughout this blog, I have tried to focus on where each coffee shop is located, what the coffee shop looks or feels like, and how the options are for customers.

Pure Cup of Coffee

Pura Bean Coffee Company has gained a following for its popular coffee beans, which are used in Sipper’s Coffee Shop previously discussed. This shop is located right off of Beach Boulevard, in a shopping plaza. The logo if Pura Bean is an orange, antique Volkswagen van, and the orange color is carried into the shop through the metal chairs at each of the four-person tables, and the bar top that looks out into the shopping plaza. Local artwork covers the white, with brown tripped walls, with pops of color, and range from abstract to realism portraits. A unique feature that Pura Bean offers, is a little glass window that looks into the kitchen, so customers know how their product is stored and created. Overall, this is the perfect coffee shop for people looking for a quick cup of coffee while in the shopping plaza.

On page 381 of our text, we learn about the benefits of cross-referencing relevant information. Cross-referencing information “lead(s) readers to look at (or recall) another part of the text.” (Einsohn 381). I used a cross-reference in this entry to refer back to my entry for Sipper’s Coffee Shop. Since Sipper’s uses Pura Bean’s coffee beans, I thought that this would be the perfect time to practice my cross-referencing. I did not want to draw attention away from the main coffee shop in this entry, Pura Bean, so I briefly discussed Sipper’s and continued with my description.

Hidden Gem Off Baymeadows

The Coffee Grinder is an urban take on all of the more modernized coffee shops in Jacksonville, Florida. Esthetically, this coffee shop is a mixture between a hotel lobby and a Starbucks with its color scheme and wood accents, and plushy chairs, television, and fireplace. Along with the wood accents on the walls, there are square panels that add dimension, and paintings that feature outdoor sceneries. Coffee Grinder is hidden among many shops in a busy shopping plaza right off of Baymeadows Road. Unlike many of the other coffee shops, which play newer pop or indie genre music, Coffee Grinder customers can listen to chill step music. If you are unfamiliar with this style, chill step is known for its mellow beats and calming voices that are perfect for relaxing and studying. The service is a little slower than other coffee shops, however the selection and final cup is worth the few extra minutes.

In this entry, I tried to focus on recognizing dependent clauses from independent clauses, and using a comma when necessary. For example, the sentence “If you are unfamiliar with this style, chill step is known for its mellow beats and calming voices that are perfect for relaxing and studying.”, has a dependent clause that proceeds an independent clause. In this example, it is necessary to connect the two clauses with a comma.

Tapestry Park

Tapestry Café is in the perfect location because it is surrounded by the beautiful townhomes in Tapestry Park, which include restaurants and small businesses. Just a few minutes off of Butler Blvd, you can grab lunch, ice cream, or a cup of coffee at this café. The inside of the café includes high-tops and regular, two person tables, and outside there are little café style tables. The space has an open floorplan, and a cozy feeling with warm neutral walls with red accents. For students looking to study, this is not the place for you because of the lack of outlets, and the television and radio noise that overlaps.

Chapter 14 of The Copyeditor’s Handbook, discusses grammar in its simplest forms. An aspect of this chapter that I decided to focus on for this entry, is subject-verb agreement. I know this is something that I struggle with in my writing, so I decided to solely focus on this aspect of chapter 14.

On the Corner of 3rd Street

Bold Bean Company is like many of the modern coffee shops that has been reinventing the way people go to relax and socialize, while grabbing a cup of coffee. They offer local beers on tap, and once a month have a beer night. The selection of coffee is typical of regular coffee shops, however for caramel lovers, this is not the coffee shop for you. Instead of caramel flavoring, Bold Bean offers a vanilla and honey, which blend very nicely together. The atmosphere of 3rd Street Bold Bean location compared to the Riverside location, is very different. Bold Bean on 3rd, has large windows that cover three out of the four walls, has a very cool, modern beach feeling, and empty walls display local artwork that matches the beach location. Since this location is three blocks from the beach, this location is constantly packed with people coming and going, which is good since the actual building is pretty small compared to the other coffee shops previously talked about. An aspect of this coffee shop that stands out to me, is the friendly employees who are always welcoming, willing to answer questions, and are always in a positive mood. Overall, Bold Bean Company on 3rd is the perfect beach getaway coffee shop that offers coffee and local beer lovers a modern, beach atmosphere.

For this entry, I decided to return to the first week of class, and reread pages 3-10. Since a part of a copyeditor’s job is to “correct...errors or lapses in grammar, syntax, usage, and diction”, I wanted to focus on these four parts of editing for language, while I wrote my entry (Einsohn 7). A way I went about this is by focusing on the meaning of my words within my sentences, so that they were clear and would not bring up queries of clarification. Also, I wanted to make sure my diction within the entry would appeal to my audience. Since I am writing a blog entry, and not a research paper, I felt like it would be appropriate to be more casual with my audience.

Coffee on Five Points

Brew is the hole in the wall coffee shop that you should check out the next time you are walking around Five Points in Riverside. This little coffee shop fits the esthetics of the surrounding community with its branding, food options and local advertisements that can be seen in the front window. Right as you step into this shop the warm grey walls, concrete countertops and wood inspired tiles behind the bar draw you in. Seating options are limited but you can choose between the community tables and make a friend, the bar seating with blue, metal chairs or outside seating. The exposed ceiling gives the shop an industrial feel, while the abstract paintings add color and life to the walls. Brew offers not only coffee but local microbrew options. This is a wonderful coffee shop to sit and relax at after shopping around Five Points, however like Bold Bean - Riverside there are limited outlet options for those who want to get some work done with their electronic devices (e.g. laptop, tablet, cell phone). 

For this blog entry, I wanted to focus on the mechanics that were discussed in week 7. I had never used e.g. or i.e. in any of the papers that I have written in the past, so this was a great addition to the mechanics that I was already aware of. On page 423 of The Copyeditor’s Handbook, it states that “Common Law abbreviations may be used in parenthetical expression and in notes” (Einsohn). I used this mechanic in my last sentence, similar to a previous entry, to add in information that specified what ‘electronic devices’ I am referring to. Also, another part of mechanics is capitalization, which I used when naming the coffee shop as well as the part of town where it is located.

Eclectic Vibes

Bold Bean - Riverside is a few minutes walk from Five-Points, but is worth the walk or drive. With its speckled concrete floors, exposed brick and wood paneling this a great location to sit and catch up with friends. The sitting options include a bar that overlooks the street, steel tables and chairs and a bar area with stools. The front of the shop has tall windows that brighten up the space, adding to the open, airy floor plan, while the industrial style light fixtures give this space a more masculine feeling. 

Along with Bold Bean’s coffee and tea options they offer beer, and at this location there is a brewery that can be viewed from the main part of the coffee shop through windows. The shop also offers realism artwork for sale on the walls. If you are looking for a place to study, I would not recommend this coffee shop because of the lack of outlets for you devices (e.g. laptop, tablet, cell phone). 

For the lesson in week 6, my focus for this entry was on editing for bias. Bold Bean - Riverside is known for being represented by particular group of people, so it was hard to not write about it. To keep the bias of this “group designation”, I instead focused on the building itself as well as the other options this coffee shop has (Einsohn 405). From editing the exercise for this week, I learned that editing for bias is easy for some sentences, while very difficult for others. This goes for writing a blog without bias since I would not have thought about how my entries could be biased. However, this entry in particular has taught me to look at the bigger picture of the entry, and not certain details that could potentially be insensitive.

Hint of Modern with a Twist of Southern Charm

Southern Grounds is one of my go-to coffee shops not because of the actual coffee or the great location on Atlantic Beach, but because of the dogs that are allowed to come in and relax with their owners. This dog-friendly coffee shop offers indoor seating with tables and chairs, small comfy chairs, bar seating that overlooks the main road, and actual bar seating. Not only does Southern Grounds have great coffee, but they offer beer and wine, so if you want to go in the morning for coffee, you can go back in the evening for a beer. The coffee shop is surrounded by beach and Jacksonville inspired pictures, as well as exposed wood beams and pristine subway tile along the bar. The outdoor seating is perfect those crisp fall and winter days in Florida. The courtyard, where the outdoor seating is, connects other little shops and boutiques for you to wander into, if you want to get your coffee to-go. If not, find a place to sit, have your coffee in a ceramic mug, and enjoy the dogs that come in and out.

For this blog entry, I continued my use of hyphens from previous lessons, as well as my use of commas. With the focus of week 4 being on diction, meaning and tone, I wanted to make sure that my entry for this week matched these three areas of focus. The diction of this blog entry does not have “many far-fetched, abstract, or polysyllabic words” that could potentially distract the reader (Einsohn 384). Instead, I tried to stick with familiar descriptive words to create an image for the reader. The meaning of the words I chose to describe this coffee shop were chosen so that they further explained the atmosphere of this shop. Finally, I tried to keep the tone in this entry, as well as my other entries, positive because I want to reflect how I feel when I drink coffee.

Home Away from Home

Looking for a coffee shop that makes you feel at home? Look no further than Sipper’s Coffeehouse located on Gate Parkway. With a constantly changing furniture layout, this coffee shop is a comfy, feel-good shop to study at. You have the option of sitting at one of the two community tables or desk areas, outside under some nice shade, or the multiple other seating possibilities that are fit into this small shop. Serving Pura Bean coffee, Sipper’s is the Altar’d State of coffee shops. There are clothing items and artwork for sale in the front part of the shop too. If you decide to study here, bring your headphones because of the high foot-traffic, as well as the movie or music that will  be playing each day. Personally, I enjoy listening to my own playlist, so when studying I always have my headphones in hand. My favorite items to get here is the gluten-free bacon, cheese and egg breakfast sandwich and a coffee with Irish crème and a drop of regular crème. However, for those who do not have a gluten allergy like me, there are other options such as regular breakfast sandwiches and bagels to satisfy your morning cravings.

This blog entry was focused around week 3, and the commas, hyphens and clauses that were of topic. Commas as mentioned in my last entry, are a part of writing that I struggle with, so to improve, I have been continued to check my sentences and their structures. Hyphens are pretty easy to identify and use, so it was easy to incorporate 3 in my entry. Something that I was unsure about before this class was what independent and dependent clauses were. The textbook gives a great definition for both of these terms. Independent clauses “can stand alone as a complete sentence”, while dependent clauses “cannot stand alone” (Einsohn 74). With these definitions in mind, I was able to recognize clauses throughout my entry that I would not have noticed before. For example, ‘Serving Pura Bean coffee’ is the dependent clause to ‘Sippers is the Altar’d State of coffee shops.’ This is just one of the few examples from the entry above.

Book Junkies Paradise

If you are a book junkie, Chamblin’s Uptown is the place to go for a great cup of coffee and about 100,000 books to look at and purchase. With local artwork around the store for sale, and Chinese lanterns floating above your head, Chamblin’s Uptown is a unique, artsy abode. There is a warning for anyone who is a neat freak, however. This is not the place for you if you like order, clean lines, and patterns and colors that compliment each other. Chamblin’s Uptown is going to be in your face with the mounds of books, DVD’s and CD’s, and the mismatched artwork on the walls and tables. However, this adds to the appeal since there is always something new to look at around every nook.

The coffee shop is connected to the bookstore and offers your usual coffee (e.g. Americano, latte and cappuccino), but also has food options for vegan and non-vegan’s. The shop offers tables and chairs to sit and enjoy your coffee, as well as outdoor seating. I would not suggest sitting outside if you want to have a peaceful moment with your coffee. The street, N Laura St, that this coffee shop and bookstore is on, is very busy with the downtown hustle and bustle, the music coming from Hemming Park, across the street, and the construction that always seems to be taking place. Inside the coffee shop however, you can enjoy the noise of coffee being made, contemporary instrumental music with a hint of jazz and conversation galore. No matter if this is your first visit or your hundredth, Chamblin’s Uptown will keep you intrigued on every visit.

For this blog entry, I wanted to focus on what we learned during week 1; the mechanics of editing. My focus was on spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and treatment of numbers (Eisohn 5). For example, I wanted to make sure that my use of the word ‘there’ was correctly spelled rather than the other two forms of this word, as well as make sure that I did not need to transpose a letter in a word. Capitalization was harder than I thought since I am not used to using the words ‘DVD’s’ and ‘CD’s’ in my writing. I did not realize that both of these words had to be capitalized just as ‘Chinese’ and ‘Americano’. Next, as I was writing and revising this entry, I have consistently gone back to make sure that my use of punctuation is correct. I have a bad habit of using too many commas in sentences, so its something that I have been working on. Finally, I had two ways to write out separate numbers in this blog entry. The first, ‘100,000′, was written in numerical style because of the large number and the clarity that it brought forth by using this style. The other number, ‘hundredth’, was spelled out because it fit the style and purpose of the sentence rather than writing the numerical form.
