On this spot in May of 1942, the United States Coast Guard cutter ICARUS was enroute from New York to the Gulf for a transfer of station... Suddenly a massive explosion rocked the tiny cutter as a misfired torpedo struck the ocean floor and alerted her Captain to the nearby threat. . . Within minutes, on this exact spot, the U - 3 5 2 was bracketed by a perfectly laid pattern of depth charges. The engine was destroyed, the lights went out, and soon this once mighty hunter, and her reckless Captain, would find themselves floundering in the Atlantic swells. . . On the 23rd of October we made a trip out to join some local divers and film the wreck for a video. An attempt was made to launch my rov 'Faith' and join the divers in their exploration, but this was unfortunately not accomplished due to the horrible currents which nearly swept the rov away. I felt less 'defeated' by the setback because half of our veteran dive crew were unable to reach the wreck, either from the current (which the Captain called the 'Worst I've seen in 15 years), or from attempting to guide my rov to the bottom. . . Marc Corbett was the man of the hour, he not only secured the line to the wreck for our charter, but he also took the dive and attempted to film a chunk of what I was attempting to see myself.... So even though this was a bust for ME and the rov... It was by no means a failure. . . . I'll do a small video overview pending my return, and a blog post for Storied Treasures website. . I didn't make it to the wreck itself... But I finally managed to make it to the SPOT it occurred. . That alone is something special right? .
