Jeju Island Edition: Dreamtree Cafe When we went to Jeju Island a couple of weeks ago we weren't really on the lookout for cafes, but sometimes you just happen upon things. It was a chilly, cloudy day and JiEun wanted to show my mom (she came to visit us in Seoul) one of Jeju's oldest villages--성읍 (Seong-eup). It's been maintained in the traditional fashion for ages. The village rests at the foot of Mt. Halla and as we drove there it felt like we were headed to the middle of nowhere. Such is the effect of Jeju's landscape when you're used to living in Seoul. A village resident who probably spotted us wandering aimlessly around offered to give us a tour; the village seemed strangely un-touristy, almost as if we weren't supposed to be there at all.
Narrow roads lined with stone walls made of volcanic rock wound their way through acres of stone huts, most of which were still private residences. Our guide showed us the traditional tongsi or pig toilets--basically pits where pigs eat the poop dropped into them--and the sticks that men must keep close at hand to keep the pigs from biting anything attached as they squat over the opening. What we thought was an act of good-will actually turned out to be a ploy to get us to buy some juice made in the village. After JiEun struggled through Jeju dialect to explain that we weren't in the market for juice we escaped to a field where we saw teams of old ladies winding grass into the long ropes that attach the thatch to the roof beams of the huts.
A few huts on the other side of the field served as makeshift gift shops, selling more juice and Jeju chocolates--of course--but the smell of coffee drew us to one hut in particular, which turned out to be Dreamtree Cafe. The cafe was empty when we went inside. One barista manned the counter. We were surprised to have found a cafe, especially one offering site roasted specialty coffee, and he seemed surprised to see us too. He was a gracious guy, chatty, well-traveled, though extremely slow at making coffee. We had no problem with this. It almost seemed like the setting required an unhurried preparation. The whole village was quiet and slow. He hand milled the beans, which he said were roasted on the stove in a skillet, measured everything out, and brewed using a Kalita dripper.
The result was three cups of over extracted Brazilian coffee. This may sound like a bad review but the coffee experience involves many factors. Firstly, bean quality, processing, and preparation are key, but the setting and state of mind of the drinker are important factors as well. Because of the latter, Dreamtree offered one of my favorite coffee experiences in Korea. Perhaps it was the unexpectedness of finding it. Maybe it was having family nearby. Maybe it was the gray sky, chilly wind, and quiet air. Maybe it was the gracious barista who sent us home with a couple hundred grams of free coffee. Whatever it was, I recommend experiencing it yourself.

Cafe Rosso (카페 로쏘)
Having heard good things about Coffee Factory in Samcheong-dong we set out into the bitter cold last Sunday night. Disappointment followed--the building that used to be Coffee Factory is now Kiehl’s soaps, or something to that effect, and Coffee Factory (now Coffee Faktory) moved down the road into a big two story building reminiscent of Caffe Bene. They no longer offered single origin pour overs, dutch coffee, or any of the good stuff we’d heard about. Such is life.
Our original idealism quickly descended into simple desperation for a warm place to sit down. This was the state of mind with which we came across Cafe Rosso--an all too cutesy cafe near La Clé*. Other than the building itself--which is great, the ideal building for a cafe--the place seemed like every other couples cafe in Seoul: polaroids pinned to a cork board, fashion magazines, Totoro figurines, smileys on top of your latte. Unenthused, but warm, we took a look at the menu. I was surprised by their offerings of single origins. Just enough to choose from--a Columbian, a Costa Rican, an Ethiopian, a Guatemalan, an Indonesian of some kind. I am usually wary of cafes that offer too many different coffees. How long does it take to sell out before they finally order and roast a new batch? Too long, I’m sure, but 4 or 5 coffees seem manageable for a cafe the size of Rosso.
I ordered Costa Rican pour over (I’ve been reading about them lately) and it was great. The flavors came through; the beans weren’t roasted too dark. The menu was one of the best I’ve seen in terms of explaining the coffee--roast level and flavor profiles. JiEun got a latte, which was...you know...a latte. And there were free cookies which...well, they’re cookies and they are free so there’s nothing else to say.
A little bit about the area: Samcheong-dong is a kind of stylish, boutique, art gallery, cafe-laden neighborhood. A popular destination of young couples. For those of you back home, I call it the Ann Arbor of Seoul (you know, if Seoul were Michigan). Anyway, the neighborhood borders Gyeongbokgung, it’s quaint, very clean for Seoul, and is generally filled with tourists. That being said, there are some great things to seek out if you find yourself there. La Clé (which I mentioned above) is a pretty cool little jazz club we’ve been a few times. It’s very casual, has a cheap cover charge, and has good local music almost every night of the week. The art cinema there, Cinecode Sonjae, is worth checking out, though they show mostly Korean films that only rarely have English subtitles. If you get off the main drag and into some of the alleys and back streets you will find more authentic Korean establishments. Restaurants in old Hanok serving delicious (and cheap!) Korean fare. Kimchi Jjim! Grilled Pork! Spicy noodles! Ok, enough.
To summarize, if you go to Samcheong-dong, don’t be turned off too quickly by the shiny facade you see. There is dirt to be found if you look in the corners, and by dirt I mean the gritty greatness that is Korean culture. Oh yeah, and Cafe Rosso is there, so if you want a good cup of coffee steer clear of Starbucks and go there.

CHAN'S ESPRESSO BAR
Chan's Espresso Bar is a great spot in Hapjeong near a cool little Korean kitchen (며느리밥풀꽃) we like to go for spicy soup on cold nights. I'm sure referencing the restaurant doesn't help you find Chan's, but it's built into our experience of the area so I have to include it. A more notable landmark is Cafe Miz. It's just down from there. For more specific directions check out the bottom of this post.
Anyway, Chan's is in a great space with floor to ceiling windows in the front, and concrete walls and flooring. The design is really simple. The focal point is the coffee bar, lined with tall black stools, and piled with lots of coffee gadgetry--a really cool La Marzocco GS3 espresso machine, a one header, which I dig as a nod to the minimalist spirit. You don't usually see bars in cafes, but I liked the idea.
Chan's Espresso Bar serves really high quality stuff--Tim Wendelboe's (a micro-roaster in Oslo, Norway) and Chan's own blend, which I don't know the specifics on. I ordered the house hand drip and JiEun ordered a latte (ordered light on the espresso because of the hour). Mine was perfect, hers was weak.
There's a cafe in Noksapyeong owned by Chan's brother (ChansBros Coffee), which was the first cafe I visited in Korea and got me started on this whole kick. His place is great, monopolizing the Intelligentsia supply in Korea. We'll feature a post about ChansBros in the near future.

CHAN'S ESPRESSO BAR
CHAN'S ESPRESSO
