Favored Fiction

While Victor is not a very avid consumer of fiction (generally he prefers scientific textbooks) he does have a soft spot for retro and speculative Sci-Fi (the former in movies, the latter in books).

Among the works he likes are The Last Man, Frankenstein, This Island Earth, and, his favorite, The Day the Earth Stood Still.

He has a very modest but well-taken-care-of book and film collection of this genre. Since becoming a criminal he hasn’t had much time to consume any of it but there have been one or two occasions where he would sneak back to his house to watch a movie after a very, very stressful day.

I’ve also been thinking about why I don’t hate Batman and Robin as much as I should (being the avid B:TAS and Arkham fan that I am), and I think part of the reason why I don’t want to set fire to it is because despite the damaging impact it has had on Mr. Freeze‘s reputation as a character, it did so in a way that was drawing from his popular interpretations and character roots.

I mean let’s look at what he’s comprised of. A campy scientist with a German (well, Austrian, apparently) accent who is desperate to save the one he loves and when that fails he desires revenge against the world/those who wronged him. When that fails he can still be talked down by Batman and the work that he does--medical in nature--ends up being used to save a life. With a ton of lame puns thrown in in-between.

It borrows from the Animated Series, the comics (at the time) and the Adam West show. Even his armor doesn’t look that out of place compared to his "bodybuilder suit” version. Victor still has Nora. He still has motivations of revenge tempered by his desire to cure her. And he’s still prone to manipulating Batman’s emotional connections (such as Robin) to get what he wants.

I don’t know if I’m making sense but the point I’m driving at here is that even though it massively flubbed him up, it didn’t completely disrespect everything that was done previously with him to do so. The worst I can accuse the movie of is terrible execution and in many cases missing the point. Playing straight all the goofy elements of the comics that the Adam West show was parodying. Misunderstanding that it was solemn grief and dedication that made people like the version of him who was saving his wife. Going for the glaringly obvious puns instead of unconventional wordplay. Etc.

So. Yeah it sucked but it didn’t spit in the face of its source material unlike SOME comics which I'm sure you know which ones I’m talking about.

I would just like to point out for any who may be interested in knowing, as it has been a while since I last brought it up (while it’s still certainly far from finished), that my Mr. Freeze story recommendations have had quite a bit added to it since I first made the page.

Which in itself is a little nice for me, I guess. When I first started out I didn’t know much of Victor’s history--like many people I only saw a couple appearances in the DCAU and assumed that was the only place his character had merit.

Not every story on the list is perfect but it’s nice to know there’s way more to enjoy than I thought.

Okay, so

College is it’s final year for me, with all the projects and classes therein, and I’m moving into a new house this month. I also have job issues to deal with and other things I have to work toward for after I graduate.

In the interest of being on here at least a little bit while I sort my life out I’m changing some things about how I run the blog and what it’ll look like.

Chief note for now though is that I rewrote my rules and notices section. There are a few changes in there (I mostly trimmed it down) but most notably, I am not beginning any new roleplay relationships at this time. I’m sorry to those who may have followed me at some point hoping to have something (excluding my recent followers, the large amount of porn bots who have inexplicably taken a liking to my blog). I’ve realized that it’s just not feasible for me right now.

--Also while I’m here I’d just like to apologize for the long periods of inactivity. I’m entering the latter stage of my college life and there is both a lot of homework and projects that I need to finish for each class and a lot of things in my own life I need to get in order. Often it makes me feel creatively exhausted. But my enthusiasm for Mr. Freeze is still here. Unfortunate for me, considering what almost every DC property that handles him is writing right now.

Things will die down and I’ll be less busy as I get into summer. I will try to be more active before then, though.
