Research Agenda & Rationale
Throughout this semester I want to continue my work as a Documentary Director. My previous work concerns the exploration of the human condition and the experiences people face living in Scotland. I find myself drawn to individuals who intrigue me, due to the way they live their lives and how that differs from what may be considered the ‘norm’. I enjoy spending time with these people and creating a film that represents them in a creative way. I am also interested in the different social issues that are present in Scotland and how that affects individuals. I find myself drawn to interesting landscapes and the way we interact with them. I am primarily invested in exploring the human condition and the way we navigate our environment, particularly in Scotland.Â
I take a lot of inspiration from the work of Agnes Varda, her use of observational techniques to explore people and landscapes mirror that of my own. Her approaches are ones I wish to emulate in my filmmaking. Despite being a fiction filmmaker, I reference Lynne Ramsay a lot in my research. Her social realist style in films like Ratcatcher and Morven Callar is very interesting to me. These are my primary filmmaker references but I tend to turn to other sources for my filmmaking. Books, exhibitions, news articles and photography are really beneficial for my documentary research. I am currently reading Glue by Irvine Welsh, his fiction is a great source as it offers detail into the difficult social and political issues present in Edinburgh in the 90s, and the way that people react to this. I also read a lot of non-fiction concerned with aspects of the human condition, this stems from a personal interest which now informs my filmmaking. Reading content like this allows me to find greater meaning in what my characters share with me, and create a film that offers greater insight on life as a whole - making an individual's story relevant to everyone. I also want to continue going to exhibitions, particularly photography exhibitions. Whilst not directly related to film, I find that a lot of photography exhibitions spark creativity and ideas that help me explore my subject in a new way.Â
Engaging and exposing myself to this range of media will help me develop my idea for my grad film. Currently, I am not feeling entirely inspired by any particular idea. In doing all my research methods as stated above, I will develop an idea that is relevant to the type of stories I want to tell and aligns with my filmmaking style. I am also open to engaging with as many new people as possible to find stories through conversation. I will be keeping a diary of this research so that I am constantly progressing. My methods of development will become more specific once I find an idea that I want to pursue.
