A day on the Dordogne River. The first 4 photos are from Château de Beynac and the last from Les Jardins de Marqueyssac. In the morning we kayaked down the river passing through several towns. The 11th century castle was in a central location during the Hundred Years’ War as the river was the border between England and France. Hurricane Ridge - Olympic National Park - Washington Hurricane Hill | Sunrise Point We were a bit worried heading up the mountain through the clouds and starting the first trail with no visibility, but the clouds moved lower as we went. Chateau de Blois – Blois, France. The chateau’s rich history was displayed in a beautiful sound and light show which included its architectural and royal history and Joan of Arc’s blessing by the archbishop on her way to Orleans. The chateau was constructed starting in the 13th century but underwent 3 additions all of which can still be seen in their unique architectural style. The view atop the Denis-Papin Staircase – Blois, France. This 120 step 19th century stairway connects the town and offers a panoramic view of the Loire Valley. Each year the risers are part of a large scale art installation that can be seen from the street below. Unfortunately, we were there between installations. Clos Luce and Chapel of Saint-Hubert — Amboise, France. In 1516 Leonardo da Vinci arrived in France accompanying King Francois I. Leonardo worked as the first architect, engineer, and artist of the King. During this time, King Francois acquired some of his most famous works - the Mona Lisa and Saint John the Baptist. Da Vinci passed away at Clos Luce 3 years after his arrival and was buried at Chateau d’Amboise. Chateau de Chenonceau - Loire Valley, France Also referred to as the women's chateau, Chenonceau's current form was completed in 1576 under Catherine de' Medici. The chateau passed hands numerous times until the late 1800s. The bridge and gallery was a primary crossing of the River Cher throughout its history. More recently in WWI the gallery functioned as a hospital and in WWII it was an important escape route from the occupied zone of France. Mont Sant Michel — The island has a long history due to its unique geography, while the iconic appearance of Mont Sant Michel Abbey was completed in 1523. The island sits about half mile off the mainland and the bay has some of the most dynamic tides in the world. The tides were described by our host as “fast as galloping horses” a phrase first coined by Victor Hugo. The sea level can change by 50 ft in just a few hours. In 2014 a new bridge replaced the manmade causeway to improve access to the island and return it to its original geography. Our day in Wales we visited Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey. The castle was built in 1067 during the rule of William the Conqueror. It is the oldest post-Roman stone structure in Britain. The abbey was built in 1131 and fell into ruin due to Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries when the lead roof was sold and building abandoned.
