ARTH-322
For my final piece, I used aspects from the work of Keith Haring, Pop art and Minimalism. I loved the designs used by Haring and wanted to use it in some way. The people themselves are simple, but their movement and positioning can say a lot about them. Mine are all doing a little dance in sync. I wanted to use standout colors and show a sense of unity with the people in the painting. The pose comes from the cover art of the song “As if You Understand What’s Going On” by Paark and Acloudyskye. When the song came on from the depths of my liked songs on Spotify I felt reminded of Haring’s work and it just seemed like a cool pose to put in repetition.
The repetition of people comes from the pop art lesson. Having them in unity, doing the same thing, right next to one another made them stand out far more than I expected. For the background I took a minimalist approach of just sky and grass. I used some swirling techniques with the brush for the grass to get a wavy look and I dabbed the sky with a paper towel to give it some texture. I wanted overall simplicity, 2 sides with a clear line between them, both taking a uniform shape. I think it is overall pretty non referential. There isn’t much to be said about what’s going on in the back but you can make it feel like whatever you want it to feel like. For me, I find the blue and green to be calming for me, reminding me of good weather and fun times outside.
I had a lot of fun making this project and i’m really happy with how it came out. I put the song below too as a reference for the pose. This was my biggest inspiration outside of class material for this. I also included some videos from the process of creating the textures and designs of the background.
