Julien Baker at the Somerville Theatre, 10/28/17
During a sold out concert at the Somerville Theatre, there were moments when the entire audience seemed captivated by Julien Baker’s impassioned performance. Following two well-received supporting sets by Petal and Half Waif, Baker stepped out onto the stage alone to deliver the soulfully introspective music that has already come to define her career. As she alternated between piano and guitar, at times accompanied by a single violin for a rather minimalistic arrangement, there was an atmosphere of a much smaller, more intimate setting than the historic theatre. The gentle yet often powerfully unbridled vocals from the Tennessee songstress began to draw enthusiastic mid-song outbursts from the otherwise quiet and seated theatre-goers, eventually causing her to reply, “Y’all are sweet!” She played songs from her 2015 debut album, Sprained Ankle, the unreleased track “Red Door,” as well as several from her sophomore album, Turn Out the Lights, released just one day prior. Baker punctuated her set list with moments of appreciation and warm banter to further develop rapport with the audience. At the conclusion of her main performance she was treated to a standing ovation, and by the end of an encore performance of “Good News” the crowd was singing along as she gathered Petal and Half Waif back on stage. Despite her quiet and humble demeanor, Julien Baker truly commanded the adoration of her audience on Saturday night.
