Once upon a time, I bought a digital colouring course on Udemy. The guy was talking mad sense, so I decided to do what he said and apply his workflow to my work. 

I knew most of what he said already, but this time, I really tried to be precise with my application of flat colour and subtle with the shading and light.

It took me a couple of hours to finalise the linework and a couple more hours to add the flat colour in the second image. Adding the shadows and highlights is much faster, but I’m starting to understand you really need to bake the cake properly before you add the icing...

There’s an episode of the 80s Transformers cartoon where Optimus Prime comes back from the dead which I thought was really cool as a kid. He died again at the end of the episode, but the seed was planted, and by the end of the series Optimus was back for keeps. 

Several years ago, I was messing around with watercolour painting in Clip Studio Paint and I just sort of ended up painting something reminiscent of that incident with the Transformers. I never really placed Rodimus and Optimus in the proper place on the canvas or figured out how to draw the gun. 

Recently, I had another crack at the same idea and really focused on trying to plant Optimus on the ground, conceive the background and all that. That’s the first two images above. The last image is the painting I did years ago. It was probably my first semi-successful attempt at painting with no under-drawing.

In all of the images, I feel like I’ve had the most success with Optimus’ torso. I haven’t finished the new attempt, but knowing me, it’ll be another couple of years before I seal the deal 😅

I like how differently drawn Darkseid has been over the years. It’s really pretty hard for you to tell if I screwed up or not ;p

So I started with an awkward side view of the Joker I drew while I was practicing Andrew Loomis’ head construction techniques. Read 3 Jokers by Geoff Jones and Jason Fabrok and decided to use it as reference to make my Joker more... Jokery. So there you are.

Also, If you like Batman, you will love 3 Jokers. Instant classic. And probably as relevant to the current continuity as all those books from the 80s. I honestly don’t think anyone on Earth knows what has and hasn’t been retconned at this point...

20 Hour Akuma part 4: Done.

I added more details and texture to the background, redid the fire ball and Akuma’s eyes, messed around with the overall lighting and some detail-work on Akuma.

I’m approaching the point were I’ll be changing things without really knowing if I’m improving them, so I’ll call time here. I suppose I could add action lines and tilt the horizon line to make it look more dramatic...

Akuma part 3

I’ve finally added the fireball, but it’s a place holder, like almost everything else. I’ve put some rough lighting in at the same time, as the fireball is intended to be the main light source.

The next step will be to merge the line work with colours to make it look more airbrushed or whatever. The background could do with another pass. I want to apply texture to the background, but I’ll have to look into what kind of brushes to use and also whether to make them myself or not...

Somehow, I’m approaching 10 hours of work on one image. it seems most ridiculous to me. Let’s keep going ;p

Akuma part 2.

I’ve started laying in some base colours for the image with the intention of altering and adding to them over time. The Idea is to make gradual, iterative improvements over time up to and beyond where I would normally claim to be finished.

 This would normally be, like 80% or something. Still got to sort out the fireball he’s supposed to be charging, then the lighting and then I’m out. Except this time, I have to keep going. The intention is to recolour the line work, fix up the background, constantly improve the lighting and whatever else comes to mind...

So I decided to draw a picture of Akuma and just keep working on it. This Inktober, I spent on average 3 hours per art work. Due to trying different angles, poses, backgrounds, etc it took me something like 4 hours to get to this stage, which is an hour AFTER I typically would have finished and moved on. 

In all fairness, this is the first time in a long time I’ve put significant effort into the scenery. It’s been a surreal experience so far. Let’s keep going...

...Oh yeah. He’s charging a fireball. I didn’t draw it or most of Akuma’s right hand since I know it will be heavily obscured when I add the ‘special effects’

I was messing around with vector layers and clean, precise lines. It’s more important the lines are clear and defined than accurate. I feel it works better in black and white, maybe ‘cos in full colour, it’s easier to spot my mistakes? I dunno. This is Cao Cao, legendary Chinese warlord/poet/womaniser/strategist, etc. Like you didn’t know ;p
